2. DIANA GABALDON AT IRISH CULTURAL CENTER ON SAT. JUNE 30

7:30 PM

Irish Cultural Center
1106 N. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004
602-258-0109 www.azirish.org

Phoenix Arizona. Attention Outlander fans! The Arizona Celtic Cultural Association is proud to bring Diana Gabaldon to the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix Arizona. June is literary month at the Irish Cultural Center with the celebration of Bloomsday and the welcoming of best selling novelist, Diana Gabaldon. The presentation is scheduled for June 30 at 7:30 PM at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix Arizona. Admission is free; donations are being accepted to help fill the Library building fund. The Irish Cultural Center library will be Arizona’s only comprehensive learning annex of Celtic studies and Celtic literature.

Ms. Gabaldon will be speaking about her favored Outlander and Lord John series and the inspirations for which these best sellers have come. The Outlander and Lord John series, popular with the Celtic crowd, tells the story of Jamie Fraser, a Scottish Highlander from the 18th century, and his time-traveling wife, Claire. The latest book in the series is A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The Poisoned Pen will be on hand providing those missing editions for your collection.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wikipedia Biography: Diane Gabaldon is the author of the best-selling Outlander Series. Her books are difficult to classify by genre, since they contain elements of romantic fiction, historical fiction, and science fiction (in the form of time travel). Her first fiction efforts were posted on the CompuServe writers forum. Favorable feedback from other members of this forum persuaded her to finish and publish the first book in the Outlander series. The stories center around a time-travelling 20th-century nurse (Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser) and her 18th-century Scottish husband (James Fraser), and are located in Scotland, France, and America. The Lord John Grey Series is a spinoff from the Outlander books, as it centers on a secondary character from the original series.

Her books have so far been sold in 23 countries, and translated into 19 languages besides English.

3. GRADA AT CLINE LIBRARY ON AUG 24

Friday, August 24, 2007
8:00pm, doors open at 7:30pm
Cline Library Auditorium on NAU Campus
Kari Barton 928-600-1365 or Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com

Living Traditions Presentations is pleased to bring you a band that The Irish Times has called Irish music with “enough steam in its heels to leave most of its peers at the starting blocks.” This band is Grada. Grada is a group that is not well known in the United States, but is finally receiving the sort of recognition they deserve, having received a fat of awards and reviews that have propelled them into the elite circle of Irish super groups.

Grada is a quintet of talented musicians from Ireland, New Zealand, and England. Alan Doherty (flutes, whistles, vocals) is widely recognized as a lead soloist on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. His freewheeling, “soaring flute playing” is a major part of Grada’s sound. Nicola Joyce (vocals, bodhran, fiddle, whistles) comes from a long family line of musicians. She grew up in Galway in the west of Ireland and learned to play instruments and sing from a young age. Her influences are numerous, but include Dolores Keane, Karen Casey (Cherish the Ladies), Tom Waits, Ella Fitzgerald, and Joni Mitchell. Colin Farrell (fiddle, whistle) was born in Manchester, a city that has probably the strongest and most vibrant Irish Traditional music scene outside of Ireland. Before joining Grada, Colin had already made a name for himself, performing and recording with an array of great musicians in Europe and the USA, including the well-known group, Flook. Gerry Paul (guitar, bouzouki) has spent half his life in New Zealand and is considered part of the “engine room” behind Grada along with Andrew Laking (double bass, vocals, guitar). Born in New Zealand, Andrew comes from a varied musical background, including jazz, Latin, gypsy, and folk styles. He has been in big demand as a session musician, having recorded for producers such as Bill Whelan (Riverdance).

Grada may not be a household name in the US yet, but they are worth seeing. Having seen them at last year’s Milwaukee Irish Fest, I was blown away by the stunning vocals, energetic tunes, and the ability to use outside influences such as jazz without losing the sound of traditional Irish music. Grada is a truly captivating band.

Grada is being presented by Living Traditions Presentations at the Cline Library Auditorium, Friday, August 24, 2007 at 8:00pm. Grada is sponsored by Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society, a 501c-3 Non-Profit Organization. Tickets will be available at NAU Central Ticketing, Cedar Music, Jitters Coffee, and Ticketmaster.com. For information, call 928-600-1365 or email Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com.

--- DIANA GABALDON TO TALK AT IRISH CULTURAL CENTER ON SAT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many of us are fans of Diana Gabaldon’s historic novels, the “Outlander” books. Arizona Celtic Cultural Association will present the best selling author at the Irish Cultural Center 1106 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix on June 30th at 7:30 PM. Admission is free; donations are being accepted to help fill the Library building fund. The Irish Cultural Center library will be Arizona’s only comprehensive learning annex of Celtic studies and Celtic literature.

Ms. Gabaldon will be speaking about her favored Outlander and Lord John series and the inspirations from which these best sellers have come. The Outlander and Lord John series, popular with the Celtic crowd, tell the story of Jamie Fraser, a Scottish Highlander from the 18th century, and his time-traveling wife, Claire. The latest book in the series is A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The Poisoned Pen Bookstore will be on hand providing those missing editions for your collection.

The Irish Cultural Center is on Central Avenue just south of McDowell Road and the bridge over the I-10 Freeway. It is located in Hance Park but has its own entrance and generous parking lot entered from Central Ave. The easiest way to reach it is to drive down Central south of McDowell, cross the bridge and take the first right into the driveway. The building is made of stone with a slate roof and looks like a large cottage.

Here is a web link to a map to the Irish Cultural Center Map

--- FOUNDATION'S CHRISTMAS IN JULY PICNIC ON JULY 29 AT ICC
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Invitation from Irish Foundation

The Irish Foundation's ”Christmas in July” with the theme of Families Feeding Families was so successful last year that we are gong to repeat it this year. The event will take place on Sunday, July 29, at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central, Phoenix. The fun will begin at 1:00 PM and go until 5:00 PM. Attendees are asked to bring a minimum of four non-perishable items which will be given to St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank. For the picnic everyone is asked to bring their favorite potluck dish. The Foundation will provide a meat and cheese tray along with rolls. In lieu of a potluck dish and items for the food bank, attendees may donate $5.00.

The Scottish and Welsh groups have been invited to join us in the fun and activities. Each group will have a table to sell their wares, T-shirts, caps, visors, cups, cook books etc.

There will also be a Silent Auction. Each group will have items for sale to benefit their own organization. Items for the auction may be dropped off at the Cultural Center or brought the day of the picnic.

Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and add to the merriment. There will be games and activities for the kids.

We are looking forward to a big turnout where all the Celts can have a good time together and do a good deed of helping other families as well.
