1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- WEB SITE TRAFFIC HOLDING STEADY
Every year in March, www.azirishmusic.com sets a new peak in visits and then things quiet down in the following months. This year is no different except that the lull is still pretty good. This March we exceeded 45,000 visits, but then settled down to a steady rate of over 30,000 in April and May. This month the daily average is 1057 which should put us at just under 32,000 for the month. To give some perspective, this is roughly the March 2005 peak and almost double the rate of just a year ago.
I want to thank everyone who has set up links to our site and those who visit it regularly. I'm always looking for ideas about how we can do an even better job.
2. ALL ABOUT GAELIC SPORTS BY DENIS KELLY OF THE GAELS
Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85004
602-258-0109 www.azirish.orgFri. June 30 --- $5
Irish football and hurling are sports unique to Ireland and have played a significant role in Irish culture. Denis Kelly of the Phoenix Gaels Irish football team will talk about how the games are played and how people can get involved.
GAELIC FOOTBALL www.the-shot.com/gaa/#0
The size of the field is some meters bigger compared to football (soccer). You have one goal at each end, which look quite similar to the ones on football (soccer) grounds. But the two goalposts reach up to the air beyond the crossbar, like in rugby. A ball that goes into the goal is worth 3 points, a ball that goes across the bar (between the posts) is worth one point.
If you see a result like teamA 2-10, teamB 1-14, it will mean that team A has scored 2 goals and 10 points what altogether makes 16 points. TeamB has won because 1 goal and 14 points makes 17 points altogether.
Sounds complicated but the rest is easy: The match is played with a ball similar to a football two halfs, 35 minutes each.
Both teams have 15 players. It is allowed to touch the ball with hand and of course foot. Allowed are about four steps with the ball in hands than the ball has to be tipped or touched with the foot.
If the match ends with a draw it will be replayed.
The games lacks certain elements of Football (soccer) because of the missing offside and because of the possibility of scoring single points from further distances. It is characterized by a big passion and a high unvaried constant tempo.
3. NEWS FROM THE IRISH CULTURAL CENTER
--- SEAN LEE TO MAKE MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT AT IRISH FOUNDATION MEETING NEXT WED
Sean Lee, of the ICC, will speak at the Irish Foundation meeting about an exciting development which is in the works at the Cultural Center. The meeting is on Wednesday, July 5, at 7:00 pm at the Center, 1106 N. Central, Phoenix. Those who attend will get a sneak preview of the July Art Walk Show.
--- FAMILIES FEEDING FAMILIES THEM OF CHRISTMAS IN JULY PARTY ON JULY 23
A pot luck picnic will be held Sunday, July 23, from noon to 5 PM at the Irish Cultural Center.
We are returning to the original purpose of Christmas in July which was to replenish a food bank. Attendees should bring a minimum of 4 non-perishable items which will be given to St Vincent de Paul. For the pot luck everyone is asked to bring food according to their last name: A to J, appetizers, K to M, main dish: N to Z, dessert.
In lieu of a potluck dish and items for the food bank attendees may donate $5.
The Scottish and Welsh groups have been invited to join us in the fund-raiser. Each group will have a table to sell their wares, T-shirts, cups, cook books, etc.
There will also be a Silent Auction. Each group will have items for sale to benefit their own organization. Items for the silent auction may be brought to the July meeting or the day of the picnic.
Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and join the fun.
There will be games and activities for the kids.
We are looking forward to a large turn out where all the Celts can have fun together and help other families as well.
--- GET WELL WISHES TO THE JOYCES AND CARROLLS
The members of the Foundation send get well wishes to Bob and Carole Joyce and Harry and Sandy Carroll. After returning from a rain soaked but fun filled trip together in Ireland bad luck has fallen on the travelers. Harry and Sandy were in a car accident where Sandy sustained four broken ribs and Harry was bruised and battered. Carole underwent arthroscopic surgery on her knee (not related to the accident) and Bob is nursing a sore back from lugging all those suit cases. Best wish for a speedy recovery to everyone.
--- IRISH BREAKFAST HUGE SUCCESS
More than 50 people gathered at The Dubliner Pub on June 25 to enjoy an Irish Breakfast and great camaraderie. There were several new members including six year old Brandon Melcher and long time members Pat and Nora Lawlor who are a bit over six. Everyone enjoyed visiting with new friends and friends they hadn't seen in awhile.
We are planning another Breakfast in August at Molly Brannigan's. We are waiting for the date when Ocean's Apart, Steve Colby and John Good, will be playing there.

5. WELSH LEAGUE NEWS
July Activities:
Although we are not having a Welsh League meeting in July there are two events that our members and friends are invited to participate in along with other Celtic organizations.
1. Saturday and Sunday, July 15th and 16th is the Flagstaff Festival The festival will be held at Foxglenn Park, 4200 East Butler Ave. Welsh League will be there with a booth, and John Good will be playing and conducting workshops as part of the entertainment. See their web site for details:
www.nachs.info/flagstafffestival.asp
We need people to help staff our booth on both those days for as short or as long a time as you are able. Please contact Mary Gilchrist at 480-946-0667 or marygilchrist@cs.com if you can help.
More Celtic Co-operation!
There is great energy and enthusiasm abroad these days regarding increased communication and co-operation among the Welsh, Irish and Scottish groups in Arizona. Under Michelle Campbell's leadership representatives of all the groups are meeting together regularly to find ways to publicize our events, co-ordinate our calendars, and generally support each other's efforts. We will keep you posted as things develop.2. Attending the Irish Foundation picnic is the first of such opportunities.
The Irish Foundation has invited us and the Scots to their summer meeting, an indoor picnic at the Irish Cultural Center on Sunday, July 23rd from noon to 5 p.m. This is a potluck event. Those whose last names begin with A - J should bring an appetizer; K - M, main dish and N -Z, dessert. Because this picnic is intended to benefit the "Families Feed Families" program everyone attending is asked to bring a minimum donation of 4 non-perishable items, which will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.
We will have a table of our items to sell - we keep the proceeds - and can donate things for a silent auction.
