--- LYRICS PAGE UPDATE

The AIMS lyrics page has been part of the website since the early days when Joe Bethancourt first setup our site. In recent weeks I’ve added a lot more songs, but more importantly I’ve added a new field with links to samples of the songs. This is fairly common for lyrics pages, but our site has a new wrinkle. The links are to youtube clips, mostly using clips from the artist who made the song famous.

For example, rather than just an MP3. I’ve chosen youtube verions the most famous verions such as Ride On, by Christy Moore. Others include classic versions Whiskey in the Jar by the Dubliners, Wild Rover by the Clancy Brothers, Caledonia by Dougie McLain, Galway Girl by Steve Earle, Only a Woman’s Heart by Eleanor McEvoy, Song for Ireland by Mary Black, Lakes Of Ponchartrain by Paul Brady, Aisling by Shane McGowan, Green and Red of Mayo by the Saw Doctors, etc. In other cases I just picked versions I really like such as Lord Franklin by Sinead O’Connor and Spanish Lady by Celtic Woman. When no obvious choice is available, I’ve picked versions that are reasonably well done, even if the artists aren’t well know.

Not every song that Joe had on the list is available on youtube, so there are some gaps.. If you have a youtube version you think is better than what I have, I’m open to suggestions. My goal is not to have the most complete list of songs, but to offer versions of songs that have inspired local artists..

3. MEMO FROM THE BRAZEN HEADS - CHARLIE’S ON FRI

Greetings all!

For something slightly different....
The Brazen Heads will be appearing at Charley's in the Weatherford Hotel in Flagstaff this Friday July 11th at 9pm!

On Saturday the 12th, we will return to the valley for a night at the Dubliner at 9pm.

We're quite happy to be beating the heat by heading up to Flagstaff even if for only a night. The band is really looking forward to meeting some new folks as well as getting to know some of the people that have been asking us to come north!

Look for Liam & Tim playing as a duo every other Wednesday at Tim Finnegan's! (next one will be July 16th)

4. MUSIC WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS ON SEPT 13

Hello All!

If you know of an educator who teaches up to and including the Middle School level who might be interested, please feel free to pass this on. As Anita explained at the meeting, educators who teach at the high school level might not find this as helpful as those teaching Middle and Elementary school. I am attaching both PDF and Word versions.

What a great way to get school children introduced to Irish Music!

Thanks,

Cyndy Gaughan

6. FLAGSTAFF CEILIDH ON SAT JULY 19

Hi George,

I wanted to let everyone know about the Ceilidh at this year's festival. It will be held on Saturday, July 19th at Charly's Pub in the Hotel Weatherford. The music starts at 8PM and I think there will be a piper contest then so plan on the ceilidh starting around 9PM. The Knockabouts will be hosting the event and all this means is that we will keep the music going. All musicians are invited to play, but we are really trying run this as a ceilidh so we can get people dancing and playing and keep things moving along. There is $5 fee to attend and this money goes towards scholarships so it is a worthy cause! If anyone has questions please contact me at info@knockabouts.org

Thanks,
John

7. ENCANTO FOLK MUSIC BEING MOVED

As most of you know, the Parks Dept. has essentially invited us to leave, by raising our "rent" beyond eveything that's reasonable. And so we'll move. We have several possiblilites and a number of places that want us to come, so our thinking is that we should consider a month at each venue that wants us. The most enthusiastic welcome has come from Joyce Pokorny, Volunteer Director at the Orangewood Nazareen (sp?) Church. It's at 7510 N. 27th Ave. It's a large Church that has two places we might play. The better, I think, is in the basement. Many chairs and large round tables, a large, low stage and a sound system if we want to use it. A large kitchen is adjacent with industrial-sized coffee making equipment. So the upshot is this: We'll do our coffee house there at least for the month of August. If all is simpatico, we may well stay, but if we want to try another site, we can do that, changing monthly, until we find the one that fits us best. I told Joyce what we've been paying to use the Park, and she's more than comfortable with that"rental". We're working on a memo of understanding re use. Let us know what you think of this. We're also thinking we might jam from 6 to 7 PM with performances to follow. This would allow for some open stage at the end and/or time for us to clean up before their security folks have to lock up at 9:30. Parking is no problem at all and the Church is just off the freeway. Anyway, please write with your thoughts..

Thanks, All
Barbara and Dave

9. LOOKING FOR MUSICIAN

Hello All!

We had a fantastic first General Meeting! Thanks to all who came and our new members. It was a pleasure having our CCÉ Regional Chairperson, Jim Belcher here to kick things off. We can all look forward to great things coming from Four Peaks Irish Arts in the future.

I wanted to let our members know of another exciting volunteer opportunity that has come our way. Phoenix Job Corps is putting together an assembly as a nod to European Heritage Month. The organizer would really like to feature a short Irish music segment in the program. After talking with her, we thought it best to look for either a strong melody player or a very small (3-4 piece) combo. (You may be accompanying Irish dancers.) The program takes place on July 31st, a Thursday, between 2:15 PM and 3:30 PM at the Job Corps location at 518 3rd Street in downtown Phoenix. There will be a couple of European Consuls speaking at the start of the program.

If you are interested or know of anyone who is, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
