-- MIKE PERKINS TALKS ABOUT BUSTER KEATON AND PRESENTS STEAMBOAT BILL JR. - FRI JULY 28
On Friday, July 28, 2006, The Irish Cultural Center will be presenting Movie Night with Mike Perkins on Buster Keaton and Steamboat Bill, Jr.
Program starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5.00
FILMSITE.ORG : Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928) is the last of physical comedian Buster Keaton's (the Great Stone Face) nine independent feature films and one of the last silent comedies. The film - actually co-written, co-produced, and co-directed by actor Keaton (with director Chas. F. Reisner) was derived from a story by Carl Harbaugh, although Keaton only took credit for acting. The story involves the father-son tale of an educated, effeminate, accident-prone, college-educated but simple-minded son - an archetypal underdog American hero - who ultimately is transformed and triumphs when he assists and impresses his burly, red-necked, hard-working Mississippi steamboat captain father in combating the threatening efforts of a rival tycoon to take over the Mississippi steamboat business in the South - and also wins over the business rival's daughter. www.filmsite.org/stea.html.
Mike Perkins is a film and cultural historian who writes a regular column for the Desert Shamrock.

Remember, there is not a July 8th Saturday dance at Kenilworth School tonight. Please consider coming to the following dances to get your Contra Dance "fix" for July:
Callers' Collective Gender Free Dance this coming Sunday, July 23 at the Augustana Lutheran Church from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The church address is: Augustana Lutheran Church, 2604 N. 14th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85006 (at Virginia, 3 blocks south of Thomas) Link here for a map & directions: http://www.pfotm.org/map.html A donation of one dollar or more from each dancer is requested. If you are interested in trying your hand at calling a dance please e-mail Peg Hesley at peglova@cox.net for information on how to get started. The dance space at the Augustana Church is air-conditioned and also has numerous fans to keep the dancers cool and happy in these current hot temperatures.

----------------------------------------------------------
We heard Anything For A Pint on June 30th and they were very good. Iain Walinck also plays with them. They are a 7 piece band with a whistle, bodhran, 2 fiddles, 2 guitars (they might be different types, but I don't know the difference), and a small hand-type accordion. We enjoyed it very much. Don't quote this last paragraph as I don't the difference in the instruments.
Pam
