1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- HAD A GREAT TIME IN FLAGSTAFF

The new location (Fox Glen Park) of the Flagstaff Celtic Festival seemed to work pretty well and there seemed to be a good crowd. Other than the long walk to the food booths, it seemed to work better than Thorpe and it was good at keeping the piping competition away from the performance stages. I thought the dance competition stage was a bit too close to the Pub stage, but it did not create serious problems. All in all, it went very well.

I had my first chance to hear the Flagstaff based pub band, the Knockabouts perform. They are young, energetic, and really seem to enjoy doing pub standards. The women in the group also would do Irish dancing during some of the instrumentals. I will do a more extensive piece about them in a future newsletter.

This was also my first chance to catch the Tatters. This is a traditional group that does instrumentals. They have a rotating group of musicians and do renaissance and medieval music as well as Celtic.

Oceans Apart included regular guest Brid Dower and also harpist Mary Bouley. Mary is best known for recording with New Potatoes and playing with Trim the Velvet of Tucson.

The festival was the first opportunity for harpist Laurie Riley and Mary Bouley to finally meet. They played together at Laurie's Harp Center booth and at a seisiun.

The always popular Alex Beaton performed with his combination of great vocals and witty patter. Alex Beaton fans will get a chance to see him in Phoenix at the Irish Cultural Center on Nov. 12 (see concert series information below).

And of course, Wicked Tinkers did their thing. Listening to their CD doesn't come close to capturing the wild energy they generate at their performances. Their party after the Festival absolutely packed Mogollon's.

2. IRISH ROCK BAND THE KISSERS AT RHYTHM ROOM ON WED JULY 21ST

Wednesday July 21 - The Kissers Pucker up for the Kissers! This fun and fiesty Irish Rock Band will be in Phoenix to rock the Rhythm Room. Their sets are in part comprised of pub tunes, band originals and Johnny Cash covers. Opening set by the Valley's own "CJA".

Where - The Rythmn Room 1019 E. Indian School Road
Time - 9:00 (doors open 1 hr before)
Cost - $6 cover

Karen Turner
karturn@juno.com

P.S. You might want to add that it is a 21 & over gig!

[EDITOR'S NOTE: I have to admit I was not aware of the Kissers until recently. This is their first visit to Phoenix. The following is from an article written in 2001 by Natasha Kassulke that can be found on their web site: www.thekissers.com]

"The group consists of guitarist-banjo player Nate Palan (aka "Waylan Nate McKisser"), mandolin player-guitarist Kevin Youngs (aka "Chef Kevin McKisser"), singer-guitarist Ken Fitzsimmons (aka "Chieftain Kenny McKisser"), drummer Jamie Ryan (aka "The Helicopter"), fiddler Kari Bethke (aka "Cowgirl Kari McKisser"), bassist-singer Caitlin Oliver-Gans (aka "Cousin Caitlin McKisser"), and accordion player-pianist Peter Colclasure (aka "The Kid McKisser").

"Fitzsimmons is the level-headed one on stage and off. He calls out the songs and he is the cheerleader. Oliver-Gans is the negotiator who mends tough situations and is a magnet for equipment. She's the only one in the group who can get away with wearing leather pants.

"Youngs is the most Irish-looking of the group. He is cool, calm and a versatile performer. Bethke is the newest member of the group and an excellent musician. She only needs to be shown how to play a piece once -- but she's found that's it's tougher than it looks to play fiddle and dance at the same time.

"Ryan is the backbone of the group. The day he joined, The Kissers went from being a fun, hobby-style band to becoming a professional group. He's upbeat and the only one in the group who owns that critical piece of band equipment -- a van.

"Colclasure learned about The Kissers from a flyer at the UW-Madison. His great-grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland and Colclasure, a pianist, learned to play the accordion when he joined The Kissers.

"Palan oozes rock. He rocks 24 hours a day. There is no off button and he brings ferocious energy to the stage, breaking strings and playing into the crowd. He also has a large CD collection that the group draws from.

"The Kissers are as feisty as their name. When the group formed, their main inspiration was the Shane MacGowan-led Irish punk/folk band known as The Pogues. The Pogues' full name, though, was Pogue Mahone -- Gaelic for "kiss my a--."

Contrary to popular opinion, The Kissers' name has nothing to do with kissing the Blarney Stone. Like The Pogues, The Kissers have a warped sense of humor, have earned a cult following, and have a reputation as an exciting live act. "

7. UPDATE ON THE FALL CONCERT SERIES

Good morning, publicity is creating good interest in the ICC concert series, and the local access TV, Channel 11, http://phoenix.gov/11/phx11.html has shown interest in taping the series for noncommercial broadcast, to aid future publicity. Surprisingly (to me anyway!), this public/government station reaches quite a wide local audience, and would help the Center concert series significantly.

We, of course, would need your permission to do this. Either way, please send your reply and/or inquires for further information to Lisa at: ischneid27@aol.com Hwyl am y tro (bye for now),

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Performance Review - The Old Blind Dogs - Chicago, IL.
Written by Kari Barton

On Friday, April 23, 2004 the Old Blind Dogs of Aberdeen, Scotland performed two amazing shows at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. The first show was sold out and the Dogs met with a very enthusiastic crowd. The second show did not have as many seats sold (it was added at a late date), but many members of the first audience stayed to enjoy another performance of the Dogs, and were no less enthusiastic.

They performed at the Old Town School a year prior as an opening act for Tim O'Brien. There were quite a few comments as to why they were not the headlining act at that show. For this show, they were the headliner. The Old Town School isn't slow to recognize an outstanding band full of talent when they see them.

The Dogs introduced their newest member, Aaron Jones, playing bass and cittern. Together with founding member Jonny Hardie (fiddle and mandolin), Rory Campbell (small pipes and whistles), Jim Malcolm (vocals and guitar), and Fraser Stone (percussion), the Dogs continue to amaze and wow their audience. The musicality and performance quality of the Old Blind Dogs increases each time I see them (six times so far). They performed music from their latest cd, The Gab O Mey, released on Green Linnet in 2003 as well as favorites from past albums. When I talked with the Dogs over a pint at The Grafton Pub, they told me they were recording this tour and would be putting together a live album, their first ever in 13 years. Look for the album coming out sometime in the fall, hopefully in time for this tour. Early and late show crowds at the Old Town School showed their appreciation with hoots, hollers, a standing ovation, an encore, and even some dancing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Old Blind Dogs continue to innovate their musical talents and keep entertaining audiences all over the world. They will be entertaining Flagstaff audiences Friday, October 1, 2004 at 8:00pm at The Orpheum Theater at 15 W. Aspen St. in downtown Flagstaff. This is the Dogs' first time playing The Orpheum, but the seventh time performing in Flagstaff. The band always looks forward to playing in Flagstaff; it's one of their favorite stops. For ticket information call 928-522-7052, 928-774-7261, or 928-600-1365 or email livingtraditionspresentations@yahoo.com. We look forward to seeing you there!

12. INVITATIONS ALL IRELAND BUSKING COMPETITION

My name is Patrick Burns and over the last 4 years I have been organising and promoting Busking events. Two years ago I applied and received the rights to stage the All Ireland Busking Competition in Northern Ireland which is now registered in my name. This event became so successful that on Safety Officers advice I have decided to move the All Ireland Busking Competition to a larger and safer site, for competitors and spectators, away from traffic and parked cars. The site is at Central Promenade, Newcastle, Co Down. I think with the safe beach and sea beside the promenade where we can stage traditional seaside events for the children (Punch & Judy, Sand Designing, Pony Rides, Fancy Dress Parade, etc), all this plus the beautiful backdrop of the famous Mourne Mountains, I feel makes this site perfect for a family fun filled day out. Live bands and children's entertainers set the mood for browsing around the craft, book, painting and collector stands. I am inviting buskers and spectators, once again, to join the fun at this unique event which is growing every year. The event takes place on Saturday 28 August (Bank Holiday weekend), at Central Promenade, Newcastle, Co Down, for a family fun filled day. No other busking event or competition is registered or have the rights to declare any one ALL IRELAND BUSKING CHAMPION.

Where Do The Proceeds Go From The 4th Annual ARIZONA IRISH FESTIVAL And Who Do They Benefit?

The Arizona Irish Festival is the major fundraising event to benefit programs and activities that the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation (a 501 ( c) 3 not for profit organization) provides at the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix.

The funds raised provide for :
* Academy of Performing Arts expansion that includes classes in various musical instruments, dance, Gaelic language
* Acquisition of a telecommunication system to allow for international conferencing and on-line education programs,
* Acquisition of artifacts to the Irish Cottage Museum and An Halle Mor (The Great Hall)
* Underwriting concerts of national and international musicians and artists
* Underwriting symposiums

The mission of the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation is to link the people of Arizona, the people of Ireland and other Celtic cultures through the Academy of Performing Arts and Culture with classes in history, music, dance, art, literature, drama, crafts, language, and to sponsor festivals, symposiums and concerts to enhance the awareness of the contributions made by those of Celtic heritage.

Your support as a Sponsor to the Arizona Irish Festival will give the Foundation the means to provide more opportunity for the Greater Phoenix community.

Thank you for your interest and support!

The History Of Halloween And Its Celtic Ties Halloween, As The Celts Call It, "SAMHAIN"

Samhain is the Celtic New Year's Eve. During the times of the Celt approximately 800 BC, the Samhain feast celebrating the end of summer was practiced. Unlike today, food was not plentiful year round. To celebrate a successful harvest, Celts would give offerings to their gods. They often collected food door to door to offer to their deities. Children would collect wood and kindling for the Samhain bonfire. Sacred bonfires were lit on the tops of hills in honor of the gods. Embers from the bonfires were taken to the homes in a turnip or a gourd to re-light the fire in the family's hearth. The Celts feared evil spirits. To confuse the evil spirits, they would dress in costume. The modern Celtic festival celebrates the traditional New Year with culture, traditions and arts in Ireland and other Celtic countries.

The Jack-O-Lantern comes from the Irish folk tale. Jack tricked the Devil into climbing an apple tree. Once the devil was in the tree, Jack carved an "x" in the tree. The Devil was trapped. When Jack passed away, Heaven would not let Jack in for being so mean. The Devil would not let him into Hell. Jack is forced to walk the Earth. The Devil gifted Jack with a piece of coal to light his way. Jack carries it in a hallowed out turnip.

Apples are important symbols associated with immortality, resurrection and knowledge. Unmarried people would bob for apples or suspend on a string. The first person able to bite the apple would be the next to marry.

All Saint's Day was created in the 7th Century CE. All Souls Day is celebrated Nov. 2 to honor good Christians that were not sainted. October 31 through November 2 is known as Hallow Tide. During this time, Mexico celebrates The Days of The Dead (Los Dias de los Muertos). Modern Druids and Neo-Pagans base their religious faith on the Celtic traditions. Samhain is a key holiday for these groups.
