1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- FOUNDATION'S CHRISTMAS IN JULY PICNIC ON SUN

The Irish Foundation's Christmas in July with the theme of Families Feeding Families was so successful last year that we are gong to repeat it this year. The event will take place on Sunday, July, 29, at the Center. The fun will begin at 1:00 PM and go until 5:00 PM.

Attendees are asked to bring a minimum of four non-perishable items which will be given to St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank. For the picnic everyone is asked to bring their favorite pot luck dish. The Foundation will provide a meat and cheese tray along with rolls. In lieu of a potluck dish and items for the food bank, attendees may donate $5.00.

The Scottish and Welsh groups have been invited to join us in the fun and activities. Each group will have a table to sell their wares, T-shirts, caps, visors, cups, cook books etc.

Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and add to the merriment. Their will be games and activities for the kids.

We are looking forward to a big turnout where all the Celts can have a good time together and do a good deed of helping other families as well.

2. MEMO FROM RICK CYGE - FRI AT HERITAGE SQUARE

Hi folks!

Many of you know me as Meadowlark's guitarist. Recently, I've begun performing as a solo fingerstyle guitarist between Meadowlark gigs. (In a past life I was a singer/guitarist in the Boston folk scene.)

I wanted to ask you, my friends and Meadowlark fans, to help me support a wonderful little gem of a venue in downtown Phoenix's historic Heritage Square. It's a historic house that is the home of a charming little tea house, The Teeter House. The Teeter House offers a tastey and reasonable priced menu of dinners as well as a variety of teas and munchies.

I perform a mix of "Baby Boomer Classics", some Celtic melodies and a few original pieces as well on acoustic guitars. I've been known to sing a few tunes on occasion and often throw in a few Meadowlark pieces to the mix. I perform from 7-10pm on each of the Fridays in July (there are still 2 left!).

I'd like to see them prosper and grow - that's where you come in. Come on down and bring a friend or two.

The Teeter House Tea Room

Phoenix, AZ
Phone: 602-252-4682

Hope to see you there....

Warm Regards,

Rick Cyge

3. MEMO FROM SHARON GOLDWASSER - IRISH MUSIC ON THE FIDDLE CONCERT ON AUG 11

Sharon Goldwasser will be performing "Irish Music on the Fiddle", with accompaniment provided by members of Round the House. Sharon has been performing with Round the House for nearly 10 years, but this will be an unique opportunity to hear the fiddle in more of a solo setting. The concert will take place on Saturday, August 11 at the beautiful historic San Pedro Chapel, 5230 E. Fort Lowell Blvd, in Tucson. The concert will start at 8 pm.

Sharon was recently awarded grants from both the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Tucson Pima Arts Council to pursue an intensive week of individual study with master Irish fiddler Randal Bays on Whidbey Island, Washington. As a follow-up to the studies with Randal, which were completed in June, the concert will showcase some of the tunes and techniques they focused on. She will also be sharing tunes learned from other fiddlers she has crossed paths with in sessions, festivals and workshops over the last several years.

There is no admission charge for this event, however donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the San Pedro Chapel, which has opened its doors to several concerts of Irish music, and the Tucson Friends of Traditional Music, for promoting and supporting traditional music workshops for local musicians. Suggested donation is $10 adults, $5 children under 12.

4. GRADA IN ARIZONA

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
FLAGSTAFF - FRI, AUG 24
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date of Concert: Friday, August 24, 2007
Time of Concert: 8:00pm, doors open at 7:30pm
Place of Concert: Cline Library Auditorium on NAU Campus
Contact: Kari Barton 928-600-1365 or Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com

Living Traditions Presentations is pleased to bring you a band that The Irish Times has called Irish music with “enough steam in its heels to leave most of its peers at the starting blocks.” This band is Grada. Grada is a group that is not well known in the United States, but is finally receiving the sort of recognition they deserve, having received a fat of awards and reviews that have propelled them into the elite circle of Irish super groups.

Grada is a quintet of talented musicians from Ireland, New Zealand, and England. Alan Doherty (flutes, whistles, vocals) is widely recognized as a lead soloist on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. His freewheeling, “soaring flute playing” is a major part of Grada’s sound. Nicola Joyce (vocals, bodhran, fiddle, whistles) comes from a long family line of musicians. She grew up in Galway in the west of Ireland and learned to play instruments and sing from a young age. Her influences are numerous, but include Dolores Keane, Karen Casey (Cherish the Ladies), Tom Waits, Ella Fitzgerald, and Joni Mitchell. Colin Farrell (fiddle, whistle) was born in Manchester, a city that has probably the strongest and most vibrant Irish Traditional music scene outside of Ireland. Before joining Grada, Colin had already made a name for himself, performing and recording with an array of great musicians in Europe and the USA, including the well-known group, Flook. Gerry Paul (guitar, bouzouki) has spent half his life in New Zealand and is considered part of the “engine room” behind Grada along with Andrew Laking (double bass, vocals, guitar). Born in New Zealand, Andrew comes from a varied musical background, including jazz, Latin, gypsy, and folk styles. He has been in big demand as a session musician, having recorded for producers such as Bill Whelan (Riverdance).

Grada may not be a household name in the US yet, but they are worth seeing. Having seen them at last year’s Milwaukee Irish Fest, I was blown away by the stunning vocals, energetic tunes, and the ability to use outside influences such as jazz without losing the sound of traditional Irish music. Grada is a truly captivating band.

Grada is being presented by Living Traditions Presentations at the Cline Library Auditorium, Friday, August 24, 2007 at 8:00pm. Grada is sponsored by Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society, a 501c-3 Non-Profit Organization. Tickets are $22 with a $2 discount to members of NACHS, FFOTM, NAU Faculty/Staff, and Seniors. Student and Child Tickets are only $12! Tickets will be available at NAU Central Ticketing, Cedar Music, Jitters Coffee, and
Ticketmaster.com. For information, call 928-600-1365 or email

5. TWENTY-NINTH ANNUAL SHARLOT HALL MUSEUM OCT 6 TO OCT 7

FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL

October 6 & 7, 2007

Dear Folk Music Friends—

I hope that you are saving the first weekend in October to spend with us at the Sharlot Hall Museum Folk Music Festival. Those of you who have been here before know that this Festival is a kindred gathering of folk and acoustic musicians, singers, storytellers and dancers. It is a great and joyous weekend: we literally fill the historic buildings and beautiful gardens of the Sharlot Hall Museum with music. There are mini-concerts at the Gazebo and the outdoor amphitheater, workshops and tune swaps for songwriters and for fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and other instruments, group singing, slow jams, old-time dancing, and cowboy lore. Over 150 of Arizona’s finest folk and acoustic musicians will meet here and perform. It is one of the best places in Arizona to meet people who share your musical interests.

This year we are working to upgrade the Festival printed program, and we invite you to send a photo and a 1/2 page description of your musical act with the application. You may send digital photos to me at warren@sharlot.org, but be sure they are high enough resolution for printing: 200 dpi at 4 inches wide is fine; the JPG file should be around 1 MB in size.

The Festival is still free to the public, although a donation will be requested from the public at the gates. All of the performers volunteer their talents. There are no stars and no headliners—just a lot of talented folks meeting enthusiastic and attentive audiences. The Festival runs from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7. There will be a musical instrument swap meet on Sunday morning at 9:00 on the Museum grounds.

If you can be here and are interested in performing and/or helping to lead workshops, please fill out the enclosed Festival Registration form and return it to me by August 15. Each year we are close to having to turn away willing talent, so please try to send your response as soon as you can. We may have to hold to the postmark deadline of August 15 if there is more talent than can be accommodated. We will build the Festival schedule from your responses, so let me know if you have ideas for workshop sessions you would particularly like to see included or can help to teach. We will probably include these and other workshop sessions this year: Songwriters’ Circle, Rare and Unusual Songs, sing-alongs, Bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, and slow jams, Gospel singing, storytelling, and instrumental styles on banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, dulcimer, folk harp, and jaw harp. Let me know if you would like to entertain in the children’s area.

A fun Band Scramble contest is the only quasi-competitive element of the Festival. It will be open to band members and individuals who want to jump into an impromptu string band. The bands will perform Sunday afternoon after having a little time to work up some tunes and/or songs—winners will be awarded silly prizes. If that sounds like fun, plan on signing up at the Festival.

The Instrument Swap Meet is a great chance to do some quality swapping—bring that old fiddle, or the banjo that was fine to learn on (and will be for another beginner) but doesn’t satisfy your critical taste anymore. Pass it on to someone who will cherish it and play it. We will provide table space Sunday morning for individuals wanting to display instruments and paraphernalia to sell or swap. The Museum does not ask for a commission, but donations are always welcome. We can't take any responsibility for instruments—you have to supervise them while they are on display.

I hope you can join us. Your talents are valued here—and I think I can guarantee that you will enjoy the Festival. I would love to hear any ideas you have for enhancing the Festival—write me a note on the back of the Registration form, or call me at Sharlot Hall Museum, 928.445.3122, or email me at barbaracook@sharlot.org.

The Festival will operate a Consignment Sales Area (and charge a 20% fee) for CDs and tapes of performing musicians. If you would like to consign items for sale, please check that box on the Response Form.

If you haven't received an invitation in the mail, please print out your Response Form and return by mail to Barbara Cook, Sharlot Hall Museum, 415 W. Gurley St., Prescott, AZ, 86301. Also, please make any address or phone number corrections on the back of the Response Form. www.azirishmusic.com/sharlot_2007.htm

Hope to see you soon,

Barbara Cook
