--- MIKE PERKINS ON BUSTER KEATON AND PRESENTS "STEAMBOAT BILL" AT ICC THIS FRI
Film historian Mike Perkins will talk about the great Buster Keaton. Keaton is recognized as one of the greatest silent film clowns, but fewer know his family's Irish connection and influence on his career. His talk will be followed by a showing of Steamboat Bill. Here is about the movie.
FILMSITE.ORG: Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928) is the last of physical comedian Buster Keaton's (the Great Stone Face) nine independent feature films and one of the last silent comedies. The film - actually co-written, co-produced, and co-directed by actor Keaton (with director Chas. F. Reisner) was derived from a story by Carl Harbaugh, although Keaton only took credit for acting.
The two most amazing sequences: (1) Keaton's dare-devil, death-defying stunt (Keaten performed his own) when a three-story building facade crashes down on top of him, saving him because the third floor window opening clears his head, and (2) the destructive cyclone sequence.
The farcical film, probably Keaton's funniest, was his second to last silent feature film - he followed it with two final silent comedies at MGM: The Cameraman (1928) and Spite Marriage (1929).
This was Keaton's last independent film for producer Schenck, and he went on to make a few films for MGM, but none of them (except possibly for The Cameraman (1928)) reached the same heights of innovative brilliance.
The story involves the father-son tale of an educated, effeminate, accident-prone, college-educated but simple-minded son - an archetypal underdog American hero - who ultimately is transformed and triumphs when he assists and impresses his burly, red-necked, hard-working Mississippi steamboat captain father in combating the threatening efforts of a rival tycoon to take over the Mississippi steamboat business in the South - and also wins over the business rival's daughter.

--- LINDIANNE SARNO AND GARY KUITERT ON THE HISTORY AND MUSIC OF GREENSLEEVES
Fri, August 11
7:00 PM - $5
Lindianne Sarno, author/musician, and her husband, musician/photographer Gary Kuitert, will speak on Lindianne's novel, Greensleeves, An Historical Novel of the First Irish Diaspora. Set in Tir Conaill (County Donegal) in the 1500's, in the court of Irish scholar-king Maghnus O Domhnaill, Greensleeves chronicles the work of a band of Irish scholars and musicians who dedicated their lives to saving Irish culture in the face of the English invasion. Greensleeves draws the reader into renaissance/reformation Europe through the eyes of singer Caitlin ni Conor--who becomes Lady Greensleeves. Refuting the rumor that King Henry VIII wrote the song, Greensleeves offers an account of the song's cultural and spiritual origins in Ireland and Scotland, and how the tune acquired English lyrics.
A rousing good tale of a gallant troupe of noble singers who double as spies and diplomats, Greensleeves features insightful portraits of historic characters diplomat Eoin O Gallagher (who represented the interests of Tir Conaill in the perilous court of Queen Elizabeth), King Maghnus O Domhnaill, and in the next generation, Hugh Dubh O Domhnaill and his Scots-born wife, the stately, deadly Ineen Dubh O Domhnaill.
The author reads selected passages from her book, and she and her husband speak, play illustrative music, and share photographs about their travels and research through Ireland, Scotland and Europe following the path of Lady Greensleeves.
Visit www.music-garden.net for more information on Greensleeves.

4. KNOCKABOUTS AT MOLLY BRANNIGANS THIS WEEKEND
Hi George,
I think we have just about recovered from the festival. It seems that going to two days worked out well for everyone so we hope to keep it that way. The Knockabouts would like to thank everyone that played Saturday night at Charly's and especially John and Steve from Oceans Apart.
The Knockabouts will be at Charly's at the Hotel Weatherford Thursday July 27th and at Molly Brannigan's July 28 & 29th. This is our first time to play there and we have heard great things about it so we are excited even if we have to leave the cool mountain air to play in the hot, hot valley.
We hope to see lots of friends there and we'll raise a pint (or 10) together.
Slainte

Van Morrison, considered one of the most influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll, is coming to Cricket Pavilion on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. With no opening act, the show will begin at 7:30 P.M. SHARP.
Morrison released the Lost Highway album, Pay The Devil, earlier this year. Pay The Devil is comprised of 15 tracks, three originals and 12 covers of some of Van Morrison's favorite classic country songs, including "Your Cheatin Heart," "Things Have Gone To Pieces," and "Big Blue Diamonds."
For 40 years, Van Morrison has continued to be an important and vibrant artist. He has never rested on his laurels when he easily could have with such important albums as Astral Weeks (1968), Moondance (1970), Tupelo Honey (1971), Irish Heartbeat (1988) right up to the critically acclaimed Magic Time (2005). Pay The Devil is another shinning example of an artist following his muse and being as vital today as he was when he began.
