1. OUT AND ABOUT
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- FIRST FRIDAY ON AUG 7 ART, MUSIC AND FOOD
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its time to cool down with some of the best Irish tunes, art, food and libations at the Center. Start your tour of First Friday hot spots at the Center with dinner and our special Irish seIsiun musicians.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- FUNDRAISER IN MEMORY OF PATTY BOYLE MC CROSSAN WAS A BIG HIT
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last Sunday the Celtic communities gathered to help Pat McCrossan to help pay for the medical bills that were left behind when Patty passed away in June. The fundraiser organized by John Good was a huge success. I don’t have the financial results yet, but O’Connor was packed for almost the entire afternoon.

It was an amazing turnout. I saw a number of people I haven’t seen at one of these kinds of events in years. Obviously it can’t compare to Faire or Festival, but on really warm day, in a crowd this was almost entirely people from our community, it was really impressive.

As impressive as the overall attendance was, the fact that people stayed on for a long time was a strong indication of how good the show was. Phoenix Pipe Band, Oceans Apart (with Phoenix Irish Step Dancers), Pat McCrossan, Sheila Maguire, Smoot Mahooty (first with Sheila, then Iain Walinck and then formed up into the Brid Dower Band. )

It seems odd to bring up, but there were several people there who hadn’t heard the Biffos before. They had a great set and people were raving about them long after they finished.

The better know Brazen Heads kept the audience (not just people waiting for the raffle and silent auction results to be announced) and had people out dancing (led by Sheila Maguire and Bernie Flynn). For a party that started at noon, that was packed at 6:00 PM, it is impressive how much of the audience stayed even into the set by Shay and Veno. I hung in, as Shay and Jane brought up some guests and they had a good crowd well after 8:00 PM.

I’ve got about 140 photos (most of them look good) although it was hard to get clear shots without getting the backs of people heads!!

It was quite a day.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- ARIZONA ROSE, ALEXIS HODEL AT IRISH FOUNDATION MEETING ON WED AUG 5
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Irish Foundation of Arizona will meet on Wednesday, 5 August 09, at The Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave., Phoenix.

We are happy to announce that Alexis Hodel, our Arizona Rose, will be present for this meeting.

Alexis is completing a degree in Kinesiology at Arizona State University, whilst also working as the Lead Instructor for Arizona’s Bracken School of Irish Dance, combining her love of dance and working with children. Upon graduation, she plans to teach Sports Psychology or practice Physical Therapy, and use her studies in teaching dance. The 21-year-old is a four-time consecutive World Championship qualifier in Irish dance competing in Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and across the U.S. She is a member of the Damhsa Irish Dance Company supporting arts and cultural education in the community. A member of the Phoenix Girls' Choir at age 10, she continues to enjoy travel, as well as athletics and outdoor activities, and now volunteers through ICAN, an organization helping under-privileged youth. Alexis was born in Arizona, and her maternal great-grandmother was from Co Waterford.

We hope that you can be there to join us in wishing her well in The Rose of Tralee International Festival.

Ballykissangel (an Irish television program filmed in Avoca, in the Wicklow area) will be shown as well. We hope to see you!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- ACADEMY TERM BEGINS THIS WEEK
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Pat McCrossan
iccacademy@cox.net

Hi all, The new term starts this coming Monday. Contact me or your teacher for schedule and class times. Hope to see you all. Pat

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- , DEADLINE FOR WEEKLY NEWS AND NOTES IS MONDAY EVEING
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve failed to get some announcements posted because they came after my deadline. Sometimes I get stuff in that comes on Tuesday, but I can’t guarantee it will get in.

By the way, I’m always looking for material from “fans” about touring acts (upcoming and reviews of concerts), special events, and anything that might be of interest to our readership..

6. MEADOWLARK AUGTH CONCERT AT WEST SEDONA'S WELL RED COYOTE BOOKSTORE

Our "Sedona Coming-Out Party"!

While Lynn & I (Rick Cyge) have performed in Sedona before, this will be our first OFFICIAL concert in Sedona since becoming residents of this glorious place!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WELL RED COYOTE
The Well Red Coyote (WRC), open since 2005, is a wonderful community resource, owned and operated by Joe and Kris Neri that, in addition to being a diverse bookstore, hosts an ongoing series of workshops, healing seminars, poetry readings, live music and more. The events are always free and open to the public.

Joe has invited Meadowlark to perform at WRC on Friday, August 14th at 6:30 pm. The WRC is located at 3190 West Highway 89A, #400 in West Sedona. Meadowlark's CDs are available in their music department. Please come out and support this great place and, if you haven't already been there, discover a great new place to browse and dscover new books and music.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BRIAR PATCH INN,
Meadowlark Returns to Briar Patch Inn, a favorite oasis in Oak Creek Canyon!
Tucked along Oak Creek in the Canyons of Sedona, the Briar Patch Inn (BPI) is a lush garden oasis featuring quaint cottages and a home-made breakfast each morning served at the creek's edge. For 20 summers now, our dear friends Allen Ames & Maryanne Kremer-Ames (known as Lyra), have performed during breakfast. Allen, as many of you know, has been a frequent member of Meadowlark's live ensemble and his gifted violin and mandolin playing can be heard on many Meadowlark recordings.

From time to time, as Lyra has been called away during the summer for other brief commitments, Meadowlark has been invited to "sit in" for them and provide the morning music at BPI. (We've included our original composition from this experience, "The Briar Patch" on our Windy & Warm CD)

We are excited to announce that we will be performing at this delightful venue from Thursday, August 6th through Monday, August 10th from 8:15 - 10:15 am.
The BPI is located at 3190 N. Highway 89A in Sedona. They do have a limited number of openings for folks who are not staying there to join them for breakfast for a modest fee. Call 888-809-3030 for reservations and details. Meadowlark's CDs are available at the Briar Patch Inn.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
