So come join us for a fun afternoon. Hats are optional. The cost is $10.00 per person.

--- ANUNA IN ARIZONA IN NOV

It seems like every time our friends at Channel 8 does a pledge plan, they run programs on Celtic music: Riverdance, the late Frank Patterson, Celtic Woman, to name a few and now more recently Anuna in preparation for their concerts in November. They will be at the Mesa Arts Center on Nov 13 and at the Fox Theater in Tucson on Nov 14. As far as I can tell, tickets are not yet available.

The name Anuna may not be familiar, but this is the choral group that was on the original Riverdance video. Their latest performance is featured on a video/CD titled “Celtic Origins” www.elevationgrp.com/anuna/.

--- LONGTIME FLAGSTAFF IRISH LEADER PAN SAIER PASSES AWAY

We have just been informed of the death of Pamela Saier, age 59, on July 20 at her home in Albuquerque. Pamela, very proud of her Irish heritage (NiCarthy from County Cork) served as President of the Northern Arizona Irish Foundation for several years and was very active in the Celtic community of Flagstaff.

A longtime employee of Aradia Bookstore, Pamela produced the best-selling booklet on Irish culture--Irish Culture 101--sold through the Irish Foundation and Aradia. We will publish more details in the August issue of the Independent Celt. Until we get an address, anyone wishing to donate to help with her funeral expenses can contact us at 928-779-3817 or Independentcelt@aol.com.

2. SHARON GOLDWASSER - IRISH MUSIC ON THE FIDDLE CONCERT ON SAT AUG 11

Sharon Goldwasser will be performing "Irish Music on the Fiddle", with accompaniment provided by members of Round the House. Sharon has been performing with Round the House for nearly 10 years, but this will be an unique opportunity to hear the fiddle in more of a solo setting. The concert will take place on Saturday, August 11 at the beautiful historic San Pedro Chapel, 5230 E. Fort Lowell Blvd, in Tucson. The concert will start at 8 pm.

Sharon was recently awarded grants from both the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Tucson Pima Arts Council to pursue an intensive week of individual study with master Irish fiddler Randal Bays on Whidbey Island, Washington. As a follow-up to the studies with Randal, which were completed in June, the concert will showcase some of the tunes and techniques they focused on. She will also be sharing tunes learned from other fiddlers she has crossed paths with in sessions, festivals and workshops over the last several years.

There is no admission charge for this event, however donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the San Pedro Chapel, which has opened its doors to several concerts of Irish music, and the Tucson Friends of Traditional Music, for promoting and supporting traditional music workshops for local musicians. Suggested donation is $10 adults, $5 children under 12.

3. MEMO FROM OCEANS APART

August 2007
I guess the weather is the big news in Arizona at the moment: Summer rains and sub-100 temps. It makes the Europeans homesick, something about grass on the other side of the hill.

We will be recording this month (with Kyle Harris at the controls!) The M. O. will be the same as for the last two albums ... live in the studio, with a sprinkling of overdubs, in an attempt to reproduce the atmosphere and ambience you would experience at our gigs. The theme this time is songs of the sea, to coincide with our appearance on September 15th. on the decks of the Star of India in San Diego.

Andf by the way, there's the beginning of a video collection on the site... more to come shortly thanks to Mark Foshee.

Dance Etiquette:

If each person dances with only one or two others, the social dynamics of contra dancing will be compromised. For that reason, contra dance etiquette strongly encourages everyone to dance with many different partners. This is to ensure a diversity of partnerships on the floor, and to give everyone a chance to dance, especially our newcomers.

8. GRADA IN ARIZONA

Grada in Concert
Date of Concert: Friday, August 24, 2007
Time of Concert: 8:00pm, doors open at 7:30pm
Place of Concert: Cline Library Auditorium on NAU Campus
Contact: Kari Barton 928-600-1365 or Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com

Living Traditions Presentations is pleased to bring you a band that The Irish Times has called Irish music with “enough steam in its heels to leave most of its peers at the starting blocks.” This band is Grada. Grada is a group that is not well known in the United States, but is finally receiving the sort of recognition they deserve, having received a fat of awards and reviews that have propelled them into the elite circle of Irish super groups.

Grada is a quintet of talented musicians from Ireland, New Zealand, and England. Alan Doherty (flutes, whistles, vocals) is widely recognized as a lead soloist on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. His freewheeling, “soaring flute playing” is a major part of Grada’s sound. Nicola Joyce (vocals, bodhran, fiddle, whistles) comes from a long family line of musicians. She grew up in Galway in the west of Ireland and learned to play instruments and sing from a young age. Her influences are numerous, but include Dolores Keane, Karen Casey (Cherish the Ladies), Tom Waits, Ella Fitzgerald, and Joni Mitchell. Colin Farrell (fiddle, whistle) was born in Manchester, a city that has probably the strongest and most vibrant Irish Traditional music scene outside of Ireland. Before joining Grada, Colin had already made a name for himself, performing and recording with an array of great musicians in Europe and the USA, including the well-known group, Flook. Gerry Paul (guitar, bouzouki) has spent half his life in New Zealand and is considered part of the “engine room” behind Grada along with Andrew Laking (double bass, vocals, guitar). Born in New Zealand, Andrew comes from a varied musical background, including jazz, Latin, gypsy, and folk styles. He has been in big demand as a session musician, having recorded for producers such as Bill Whelan (Riverdance).

Grada may not be a household name in the US yet, but they are worth seeing. Having seen them at last year’s Milwaukee Irish Fest, I was blown away by the stunning vocals, energetic tunes, and the ability to use outside influences such as jazz without losing the sound of traditional Irish music. Grada is a truly captivating band.

Grada is being presented by Living Traditions Presentations at the Cline Library Auditorium, Friday, August 24, 2007 at 8:00pm. Grada is sponsored by Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society, a 501c-3 Non-Profit Organization. Tickets are $22 with a $2 discount to members of NACHS, FFOTM, NAU Faculty/Staff, and Seniors. Student and Child Tickets are only $12! Tickets will be available at NAU Central Ticketing, Cedar Music, Jitters Coffee, and Ticketmaster.com. For information, call 928-600-1365 or email
