1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- LINDIANNE SARNO AND GARY KUITERT ON THE HISTORY AND MUSIC OF GREENSLEEVES AT ICC ON FRI
Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85004
602-258-0109
www.azirish.org
Lindianne Sarno, author/musician, and her husband, musician/photographer Gary Kuitert, will speak on Lindianne's novel, Greensleeves, An Historical Novel of the First Irish Diaspora. Set in Tir Conaill (County Donegal) in the 1500's, in the court of Irish scholar-king Maghnus O Domhnaill, Greensleeves chronicles the work of a band of Irish scholars and musicians who dedicated their lives to saving Irish culture in the face of the English invasion. Greensleeves draws the reader into renaissance/reformation Europe through the eyes of singer Caitlin ni Conor--who becomes Lady Greensleeves. Refuting the rumor that King Henry VIII wrote the song, Greensleeves offers an account of the song's cultural and spiritual origins in Ireland and Scotland, and how the tune acquired English lyrics.
--- CELTIC SPRING ADVANCES TO FINALS
[EDITOR'S NOTE: Celtic Spring is scheduled to perform at the Arizona Irish Festival on Sat. Oct. 26]
From Betty Breckenridge:
Celtic Spring was voted the "Viewers' Choice" winner of Wednesday night's America's Got Talent show. There's also a "Judges' Choice" winner (but what do they know?).
Thanks to all who helped make this happen by voting (repeatedly!) for Celtic Spring. This is a definite boost to our promotional clout!

3. KEVIN KING'S FAREWELL PERFORMANCE AT ROSIE'S THIS WEEKEND
Hi George, I'm moving! I'll be going to Pittsburgh, PA to complete my degree; I have to do an internship for the next year at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Conviently, Blackwood will be appearing at Rosie McCaffrey's this weekend, August 11th and 12th. It'll be my last weekend with Blackwood, so I'd like to take the chance to invite everyone out on Saturday, August 12th to see me off. I promise to wear a kilt, and I also promise NOT to dance. I think city regulations bar me from doing so anyway!
It's also my wife Sarah's birthday, so we've reserved the upper floor of Rosie's on Saturday the 12th for people who like to listen to Blackwood but don't like to look at us.
I look forward to seeing you and lots of others from the community this weekend.
Cheers!
Kevin

6. NEWS FROM SEDONA
Hi George,
I'm happy to let you and AIMS readers know that Sedona has finally joined the Celtic Music family! Things are looking up here!
A nice venue has proved to be available at long last. It's called Future Studios, a bit of a "New Age" atmosphere, but you hardly notice when Celtic performers are holding forth and it's a nice friendly and comfortable venue.
On July 6 they presented 3 solo performers under the title "Musicians Showcase" and two of the three were familiar names on the Irish music scene. First we enjoyed Connie Fisher's lovely vocals and guitar. Then the evening closed with the enchanting and inspiring harping of Laurie Riley playing the double-strung harp.
On July 22 we were treated to a performance by Tucson's "Round The House" who presented their usual fine mixture of songs and energetic Irish traditional dance tunes. At Future Studios they played to a capacity audience (about 150) and received several standing ovations from the enthusiastic listeners. I had been urging RTH to come to Sedona for several years, but no good venue was apparent until I found Future Studios and put them in touch. It was more than worth the wait.
At that performance I gave Mycenay, who books all performances, the business card and CDs of "Oceans Apart" and suggested she consider booking them sometime. She wasted no time and "Oceans Apart" will be performing at Future Studios on Saturday, August 19. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to get information about Connie, Laurie and Round the House to you before their performances, but I hope you can include a notice about the upcoming Oceans Apart gig on August 19, and that some of their fans can make the trek north for it.
Future Studios is located at 30 Hozoni Drive, Sedona, AZ, 86336. You can phone there for directions at 928-228-9139, or phone me at 928-634-8995 (or email me, see below). Any Celtic groups or individuals interested in performing in Sedona can contact: Mycenay, Future Studios, P.O. Box 4779, Sedona, AZ 86340 or phone her at 928-228-9139. Future Studios also has a state of the art Recording facility.

ABOUT TALK BY JANICE BRYSON & KATHY WOOD
Today's speakers were Janice Bryson and Kathy Wood, co-founders of the Irish Arizona Project. The purpose of the project is to research and collect historical information about people in Arizona of Irish birth or ancestry. Additionally, they hope to encourage people to investigate their own genealogy and record their stories and personal histories. You can expect to see more of this at this year's Irish Festival. Janice and Kathy have plans for a large tent packed full of exhibits and tools for searching and developing your own history.
Kathy spoke of her interest in the project starting with lessons in Irish at the Irish Cultural Center. This took her to a Celtic language conference in San Francisco where she was introduced to the name, Eugene O'Growney. Fr. O'Growney was one of the three founders of the Gaelic League in Ireland, at the end of the 19th century. He ended up living in Arizona where he came in contact with the Sisters of Mercy (from Ireland) and other influential Irish and Irish Americans. Kathy feels there are so many stories of Irish in Arizona and too little attention paid to collecting them. There is a need to for these stories to be told, recorded and remembered.
Janice went on to tell how her family had emigrated to the US and Arizona in the early days of the Arizona Territory. In digging deeper into the lives of her grandfather's grandfathers and grandmothers she too realized there is very rich history of the Irish in Arizona. These men and women involved themselves in every aspect of frontier life. Her series of articles in the Desert Shamrock are a history of the making of Arizona.
Be prepared for more from these two women at the 6th Annual Irish Festival on October 28th. An Irish Arizona tent will house exhibits, slide presentations, genealogists and audio recorders all in effort to secure a bigger place for Irish history in Arizona.

MARIAN TOMAS GRIFFIN, ACTOR
Born in New York City and raised in County Mayo, Ireland, Marian Thomas Griffin has been a part of the New York music, theatre and film scene for the past 8 years. She recently moved to Los Angeles where she now resides.
As lead singer and guitarist with many traditional Irish bands including Aisling Eire or as a solo performer Marian has entertained audiences all over New York City at venues like Tir Na Nog, Fitzer's, Tommy Makem's, Fibber McGee's, Paddy Reilly's and the Guinness Fleadh to name just a few. Her first CD Tales Of Erin released in 1998 featured the single Angela's Smile inspired by Frank McCourt's Pulitzer prize winning memoir Angela's Ashes. When Conor McCourt approached Marian to provide a song for his documentary The McCourt's of Limerick which aired on Cinemax in March 1998, he had no idea of the phenomenal reaction Angela's Smile would bring. The first national exposure of this song was Marian's appearance with Frank McCourt on CBS's Off-Tenth. Her second CD Downtown Monday Night was released in March 2002.
As a member of the Irish Repertory Theatre Marian made her debut in Frank McCourt's The Irish and How They Got That Way. Time Out Magazine called her the most talented of the lot and John Simon of New York Magazine said "Marian, who acts, sings and plays several instruments, besides looking like a more delicate Maureen O'Hara, I simply lost my heart to". At the Irish Repertory Theatre Marian also appeared in The Shaughran and she has had the honor of appearing on Broadway for the past 5 years as part of the Irish Repertory Gala Benefit on Broadway with such stars as Gabriel Bryne, Sinead Cusak, Tate Donovan, Eric Stoltz, Angela Lansbury, Liam Neeson, Vanessa Redgrave, Milo O'Shea, Frances Sternhagan and Kevin Spacey.
On screen Marian has worked with Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford in Columbia Picture's The Devil's Own, in Nye Heron's Sax & Violins and the soon to be released Sparrow's Trap written, directed and starring Brendan O'Carroll (Agnes Browne). Marian starred in CBS' "As The World Turns" as Mary Mennihan and in 2004, appeared as Typhoid Mary in the Emmy-nominated "Most Dangerous Woman in America" on PBS.
