7. KEN O’MALLEY TO PERFORM AT THE ICC ON OCT 26
Irish Cultural Center
1106 S. Central Avenue
Phoenix, AZ
www.azirish.org 602-258-0109
The Irish Cultural Centerwelcomes the great Irish folk-singer Ken O' Malley. Born and raised in Dublin City, Ken O' Malley is regarded as one of the leading Irish folk singer/songwriters in the United States today. By the time he was 14 he was playing in coffeehouses in Dublin's vibrant traditional music scene and at 15 he opened for legendary balladeer Paddy Reilly at the equally legendary Old Sheiling.
He has performed with The Chieftains, Paul Brady, The Wolf Tones, Lunasa, Solas, Mary Black and Gaelic Storm to name a few, and has led his well-known band The Twilight Lords in two recordings, The White Seahorse and Women of Ireland. He was commissioned by Turner Pictures to compose an original song, “The Roses and the Rye for the CD accompanying the movie Gods and Generals, the sequel to Gettysburg. Ken is the narrator for FritzFilms' Joyce to the World, a one-hour long documentary on Ulysses and its author James Joyce, featuring Brian Dennehy, Finoula Flanagan, Frank McCourt and Malachy McCourt. He sang in the Paramount Pictures movie Patriot Games, coached Irish actor Pierce Brosnan for his singing debut in the movie Evelyn and, most recently, recorded the 17th century Irish ballad “Eamon an Chnoic” (Ned of the Hill) for National Geographic's CD recording Romance Around the World, a collection of twelve international love songs. In August '04 Ken performed at the John Anson Ford Theatre in Los Angeles with Solas and again at the Ford in September '05 with Gaelic Storm.
8. KEENAN AND WALSH ALSO PLAYING AT FUTURE STUDIOS IN SEDONA
---------------------------------------------------------
--- SEDONA - FRI. OCT. 10
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi George:
Paddy Keenan & John Walsh are also playing at Future Studios in Sedona on October 10th.
Thanks,
Mycenay Plyler
www.FutureStudios.org
(928) 282-9139
Master uilleann piper Paddy Keenan, founding member of The Bothy Band accompanied by guitarist John Walsh.
Generally acknowledged as the most accomplished uilleann piper performing today, Paddy Keenan is certainly one of the most brilliant musicians of his generation. He can rightfully claim his place alongside such open-style legends as pipers John Cash and Johnny Doran. Paddy was a founding member of The Bothy Band, which forever changed the face of Irish traditional music. Paddy's virtuosity on the pipes combined with the ferocity of his playing made him, in the opinion of many, its driving force. Bothy Band-mate Donal Lunny once described Paddy as "the Jimi Hendrix of the pipes"; more recently, due to his genius for improvisation and counter-melody, he has been compared to jazz great John Coltrane.
"Paddy Keenan is the piper's piper, the best of the best."-Zina Lee, Celtic Café, 2001

11. THE BAND INIS ADDED TO AZ IRISH FESTIVAL
Come on out in October 4 at the Irish Festival to see the Irish band - Inis!
Born out of a passion for traditional and contemporary Celtic music, the music of Inis is at once easy to recognize and hard to pigeonhole. From traditional Scottish ballads to modern Irish roots music to inspired originals and a few not-so-ethnic cover songs, the trio isn't afraid to wander into treacherous musical waters if they're convinced the results will be spectacular.
The vocal interplay of Chris Devine and Colleen Collins, and instrumental interplay among all three members, including fiddler Becky Wolfe, is entertaining, passionate, and fun. For more information, please contact either Colleen at colleencollins@cox.net or Chris at celtichris@yahoo.com."
[EDITOR’S NOTE: Chris Devine used to front a band called Haiku Road which performed at a fundraiser at O’Connor’s back in January. Colleen Collins has been performing solo.]
