--- FRANK MURRAY OF THE SEAMUS MCCAFFRY'S PUB PASSES AWAY

From Mary-

The ICC was saddened by the news of the passing of pubican Frank Murray on August 10, 2011 Frank, a Korean War veteran, moved to Arizona in 1954 and managed a cotton gin in the West Valley during the day while tending bar at night. For over 50 years, Frank was in the bar business in some way, shape, or form.
He worked at the Dubliner Irish Pub before becoming the manager at Seamus McCaffery's – which he eventually purchased after ten years. And in 2009, he opened the Turf Irish Pub nearby. For those of you who knew Frank, you knew that Phoenix was his town. Frank was a visionary for downtown Phoenix and for that, he will always be remembered as a legend.

There was a funeral Mass on Monday, August 15th at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 7655 East Main Street, Scottsdale, AZ (located between Indian School Road and Miller) Burial was at St. Francis Cemetery, 2033 North 48th Street, Phoenix, AZ (between McDowell Road and Oak Street) There wsd a celebration of Frank's life following internment at The Turf Pub, 705 North First Street, Phoenix, AZ (between McKinley and Pierce Streets)

--- FOLK DANCE BOOK SIGNING THIS WEEKEND

[EDITOR'S NOTES: This book has more relevant to contradance than Celtic social dancing]

From bare-foot hippies dancing in contra lines to dolled-up square dancers do-si-do-i ng on the floor, Erica Nielsen is all about folk dancing.

The Peoria resident spent the past few years researching traditional American social dances for the book "Folk Dancing," published last month as part of a series on American dances. She plans to hold two book signings this weekend.

Nielsen criss-crossed the country interviewing fans of international folk dance , modern western square dance and contra dance for the book, while her husband Cpt. Nick Okamura was deployed to Afghanistan from Luke Air Force Base in Glendale.

"Hundreds of people were involved in this project. It was a tremendous community endeavor," said Nielsen, 30, who graduated from ASU with a master's in dance in 2006.

In the book, she explains how folk-dancing clubs, camps and festivals formed over the past century and details th e music, history, clothing and culture of the dances.

Nielsen blogs at www.ericawritesdance.wordpress.com .

She will sign copies of her book (available at Amazon ) this weekend:

Satu rday 10 a.m. to noon in Peoria
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, 7407 W. Bell Road

Sunday 7 to 7:30 p.m. in Mesa
Las Palmas Adult Community, 215 N. Power Road

Sedona, AZ. - The Third Annual Celtic Harvest Festival Sedona will be held September 24, 2011 from 9:30am-5:30pm in the Tequa Festival Marketplace on SR 179 in Sedona surrounded by the Red Rocks! This unique celebration will feature fine traditional Celtic Musicians, Pipers, Dancers and Storytellers. Performers include Welsh Master of Music John Good and his band Tramor featuring vocalist Brid Dower, mandolin virtuoso Billy Parker, percussion wizard Sule Greg Wilson and Master Storyteller Liz Warren. Special Guests will be Vyktoria Pratt Keating; Deb Gessner and Don Charles of D-Squared; Glendale Pipes and Drums and three schools of Celtic dance. Back by popular demand, the Maschino School of Highland Dance, the Celtic Dance Academy (Irish Step Dancing) and Prescott's Celtic Cloggers will delight Celts of all ages!

In addition to a full day of entertainment on the Main Stage, Festival goers will again be treated to a “Quiet Stage” featuring Storytellers and the 2011 AZ Colleen & Rose, Jenny Knatz and 2011 Contestants, and the 2010-2011 Irish Lasses Colleen and Shannon Kelahan-Pierson throughout the day.

General Admission Tickets are available in advance for a discounted price of $8.00 from the Irish Cultural Center or $10.00 at the Festival Gate. Tickets for children under the age of 16 years can be purchased at the Festival Gate for $2.00. Ample free parking is available at the Tequa Festival Marketplace. Children and Adults will enjoy two special presentations on the Main Stage by Falconers from the Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center. Dr. Thomas Bopp, co-discoverer of the Haley-Bopp Comet, returns this year as CHF's Official Astronomer. Bring your curiosity and questions as Dr. Bopp will be answering festival-goers' questions throughout the day.

Festival Day is the Annual culmination of a variety of school-based and community programs through which the Festival Team brings Celtic Arts into area schools, providing children with the experience of joyful Celtic Culture. Stories, songs and dances resonate in every culture and give so much to students who are losing valuable Arts experiences to budget cuts. Liz Warren, Celtic Harvest Festival Education Director, has established relationships with Educators in the Sedona area to make workshops available to school children in the days before the Festival. Artistic Director John Good, Welsh Master of Music, has prepared and researched a schedule of performers combining Music, Piping, Dance and Stories into one exciting live performance.

-- ALEES 9/11 FUNDRAISER ON SAT SEPT 10 AT ICC

Greetings brothers , sisters, members and friends.www.arizonaemeraldsociety.org

As you are aware, we have passed the half way point of the year and in a few very short months 2011 will come to an end.

It has been the unfortunate duty of our organization to have provided benevolent benefits to the families of 5 Law Enforcement officers killed in the line if duty . This number has already matched the total number of recipients from last year.

Between the past two years, ALEES has distributed in excess of $44,000 to Families of Fallen officers, injured officers and other charitable donations.

These are the same funds that would benefit (god forbid) you or one of your co-workers in the case of injury or death.

So how do we generate these funds?

Primarily through the various fundraising events, Golf Tournaments, our Christmas party and the ALEES booth at which we sell ALEES "swag" and provide information on our organization and causes.

So how can you help?

I'm glad you asked.

We have three planned events left in the year, two of them are a little over a month away.

The 9-11 memorial event, where we hold a memorial at the Irish Cultural Center along with the Fire Department for the Emergency Personnel killed during the 9-11 attacks this will e held on 9-10 (Sat)

The Golf Tournament to be held on 9-18 (Sun) at ASU thanks to Robbie Fox's Public House

And the Christmas party, to be held on December 17th (Sat)

Each of these events is dearly in need of some volunteers to assist for short periods to man the booth, sell raffle tickets, give away prizes or simply help set up and tear down.

So take a look at your calender , highlight the upcoming events and see if you can spare a few hours to raise money to keep our coffers filled for the next family that needs it.

If you can spare the time, please let me know and I will find a place for you to help out

Thanks

(Also, we has some excess shirts for sale, to deplete the supply, they are each for sale for $5.00) - photos attached...get em before they are gone

--- COBBLESTONE AT CANYON'S CROWN ON SEPT 16

Looking ahead, Cobblestone will be at the Canyon's Crown on Tanque Verde on Friday,  September 16, and again in October and November.

Every Sunday from 4-7, a traditional Irish session takes place at the Auld Dubliner.  This informal gathering of musicians is a give and take of our favorite tunes, rather than a structured performance. Listeners are always welcome, and musicians familiar with the Irish repertoire and style.

--- CRAWFORD AND VALLELY IN PHOENIX HOUSE CONCERT OCT 13

I am very pleased to inform you that our next house concert will feature none other than two lads from Lunasa: Kevin Crawford and Cillian Vallely!
Sharon and Dr. John have again agreed to open their home and be our gracious hosts! So,
save the date: Thursday, Oct 13.

BIOGRAPHY

Kevin Crawford is a flute, tin whistle and bodhrán player. Born on 6 December 1967 in Birmingham, England to Irish parents who emigrated from Miltown Malbay, County Clare. He later moved to West Clare to improve his music and become more exposed to traditional Irish music.

Bands: Crawford started in the late 1980's with Long Acre working with artists such as Mick Conneely, Brendan Boyle, Bernadette Davis, Joe Molloy and Ivan Miletitch. After recording and co-producing what he described[citation needed] as his most "traditional" CD with "Grianán," a group including Siobhán and Tommy Peoples, Niamh De Burca, P.J. King, Martin Murray, Paul McSherry, John Maloney, and Pat Marsh (released in 1993), Crawford joined "Moving Cloud" in 1993 and then "Lúnasa" in 1998, replacing Michael McGoldrick. Crawford became the "frontman" for Lúnasa during their live performances. Wikipedia

--- BILL CRAIG RETURNS IN NOEMBER

Hey all!

According to their websites, Bill Craig is playing at the Irish Wolfhound in Surprise November 4-5, and at the Dubliner November 11-12.

Hope to see you!!!

PattyLynn & Will

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Bill will finish his visit to Phoenix on Sun. Nov 13th at the ICC with a special concert starting at 3:00 PM]

Bill works regularily, and has performed at venues across Canada, the United States, and in Europe. He has shared the stage at festivals with such performers as Eric Bogle, Andy Irvine, Dougie MacLean, Battlefield Band and Mary Black. In 1987, he performed at the Roskilde fest in Denmark with Van Morrison, Paul Brady and Moving Hearts. Bill has played the Glasgow festival three times, Skagen fest in Denmark twice and Canada's largest fest, Mariposa. In the U.S., Bill has played pubs and clubs in such cities as Buffalo, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, San Diego and Washington, D.C. At various times he has performed live on PBS radio, including the Cleveland Poetry project, and live from Standing Rock U. (Kent State) He has also performed throughout Holland, Denmark and the U.K. for twenty years.

Bill Craig's performance is relaxed eclectic, thought provoking, goofy and entertaining. His casual attitude is designed to include, not exclude his audience, be it eight or eight hundred people. Bill puts all his energy into his songs and makes a point of having a good time on stage. This usually translates to his audience having a similar experience.
