1. OUT AND ABOUT

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- SEPTEMBER MEETING FOR THE IRISH FOUNDATION - WED SEPT 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memo From the Irish Foundation

REGULAR MEETING WED SEPT 2
The Irish Foundation of Arizona will meet on Wednesday, 2 September 09, at The Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave., Phoenix at 7:00 P.M. There will be no business meeting, so come join us for a fun-filled episode of Ballykissangel (an Irish television program filmed in Avoca, in the Wicklow area). We hope to see you!

2. SET DANCE WORKSHOP AT ICC ON WED SEPT 2

On Wednesday, September 2, 2009, The Irish Cultural Center located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004 will be having a Set Dance Workshop. We are pleased to welcome back Michael Harrison from Plano Texas, who led a Set Dancing Workshop here earlier this year.

Some FAQs

DO I NEED A PARTNER? Nope. You can just bring yourself or bring friends if you wish. When dances involve partners, as in céilí figures and sets, we tend to pair more experienced dancers with newcomers. How old/young do I need to be to dance? Anyone who can stand up straight, walk without wobbling (much), and hop up and down on one foot without falling over is the right age to dance. Practically speaking the group usually consists of grown-ups, although well behaved children have joined us from time to time. It's about the dancing, not the age.

ARE THERE SPECIAL CLOTHES I SHOULD WEAR? You should wear clothes you can move in comfortably. Irish Dancing is energetic and can be fairly athletic once you get the hang of it. T-shirts and sweats or shorts are standard attire for practice sessions. When showing off your stuff in a pub, cotton shirts and skirts with tights or pants that stretch work well.

DO I NEED SPECIAL SHOES? Not really. Jazz shoes or small sneakers like Keds provide a little cushion without too much bulk. Running shoes with big rubber soles sticking out in all directions will trip you up. Your shoes should have a back (no slides or mules) and should not fall off your feet if you stand on tip toe. If you have ghillies or reel shoes, bring them. Once in a while we may use hard or "noisy" shoes but we normally stick with soft.

DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO TRY THIS? No, but be prepared to get into shape if you stick with it! You can start slowly, keeping your movements low, and learn the technique while building stamina. In work-out terms, Irish dancing can be low, medium, or high impact. It's up to you. Dancing is aerobic exercise, so if you have a health concern check with your doctor before trying it.

WHAT IS SET DANCING AND WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SET AND CÉILÍ? The terminology can be confusing, but when we say sets on this web page, we mean the kind of group dancing popular today in Ireland (and around the world) in which the feet stay low to the ground, and people dance in sets of eight. If you find yourself in Ireland today, especially in County Clare and along the west coast, you are far more likely to see adults dancing the Caledonian Set or the North Kerry Set than the Walls of Limerick or others listed above as céilí dances. The styles are different, but both are challenging and entertaining.

3. MEMO FROM THE KNOCKABOUTS

He George,

Good to talk to you today. I wanted to get our opinion on something. Jacquie and I have the ability to screen print t shirts as well as print on just about anything. I would like to spread the word to the bands in AZ and see if we can supply them with shirts and such. We are able to keep cost down as we have no overhead and I know that would be a big help to the bands out there. Let me know the best way to proceed with this as far as you are concerned.

Thanks,
John

5. VOCALIST NYLE WOLFE AT THE ICC ON SAT SEPT 5

On Saturday, September 5, 2009, The Irish Cultural Center located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004 will be presenting Nyle Wolfe in Concert.

Fresh from Dublin, Los Angeles and New York, international award winning Irish vocalist Nyle Wolfe is set to enchant Phoenix audiences.

“Concert goers claimed him “spectacular”, “charming”, “engaging” and “fabulous”. The list goes on and on. The best word of praise I can share with you is to highly recommend him as your performer. You will not be disappointed.” Executive Director, Mission San Juan Capistrano, CA

His unforgettable show is a musical and often humorous journey from his native Ireland with its renowned musical traditions to glorious Italian opera houses, romantic café bars of Paris and the bright lights of the Great White Way

Nyle will enchant audiences with such beautiful songs as the Kerry Dances, Red is the Rose, Danny Boy, a Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, She moved through the fair and many more nostalgic melodies.

This is a rare opportunity to experience the live performance of one of the most accomplished soloists and sought after artists that Ireland has ever produced.

Tickets for this night of love and laughter that will have Irish and American eyes smiling are just $ 10.00 with children under 12 free.

www.nylewolfe.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nyle sang his first concert at the tender age of 6 performing “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” in his local Catholic Church. A simple “Sing and Get Paid for It!” ad in the Irish Examiner led to his professional debut in Cork’s Opera House.

A former student of John Carolan at Cork’s School of Music and Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music, he graduated London’s Royal Academy of Music with their highest academic award and won a scholarship to complete his training at Zurich’s prestigious International Opera Studio.

After thousands of performances in distinguished venues throughout Europe and North America, he has honed a reputation as one of the most talented vocalists of his generation. He has sung for international monarchs and presidents including Queen Elizabeth II, Bill Clinton and Taoiseach Brian Cowen. He has made numerous recordings with companies such as Sony, RTE, BBC, Lyric FM and Naxos.

Building on the success of his debut solo album “Moodswings” in 2007, he has recently completed a new studio recording in New York of Irish repertoire, due for release later in 2009.

His most recent engagements include an open air gala concert at the historic San Juan Capistrano Mission in California, the role of Demetrius in Britten’s “A Midsummer Nights Dream” with Opera Ireland and the first recording of Balfe’s Falstaff for the RTE Lyric FM label. During January he showcased at APAP, America’s largest arts conference in New York as a delegate for Culture Ireland.

In February he sang the title role at the world premiere of a new opera “The Earl of Kildare” by Fergus Johnston.

Future engagements include Vaughan Williams’ “Sea Symphony” for Liverpool Philharmonic Choir at the opening of Cork’s Choral Festival 2009

6. GIVEWAY” FROM SCOTLAND- CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF CELTIC MUSIC

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1ST @ 6:00PM, TUBAC TWILIGHT CONCERT SERIES presents “GiveWay” a lively and entertaining Celtic band all the way from the green rolling hills of Scotland! Since coming together in 1998 “GiveWay” has been meteoric! In the short time since the girls chose the name GiveWay (on their way to a gig and after passing numerous Give Way road signs!) they have rocketed onwards and upwards with much enthusiasm from listeners all around the UK, Europe, and the USA. The group is comprised of four sisters from Scotland with beautiful vocals, Celtic fiddle, guitar, whistles, accordion, and drums. “GiveWay” plays a delightful mixture of Scottish traditional music and haunting airs, to lively jigs and energetic reels.

After playing in competitions and clubs all over the UK, “GiveWay” got their real break when they won a prestigious 'Danny Award' at Celtic Connections in 2001. Later the same year the band was placed first in the BBC Radio 'Young Folk Awards'. “GiveWay” was also invited to take part in the BBC 1 "Hogmanay Live" television show, sharing the stage with a host of big artists, including pals Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain. They’ve performed on numerous radio/television shows as well.

From an early age, music was at the heart of all the sisters did; at five years old, Fiona started playing the fiddle, Kirsty picked up an accordion at four, Amy started on the accordion at five later switching to drums at age thirteen, and Mairi was playing keyboards at the age of six. “GiveWay” encompasses youthful vibrancy, lively confidence and skilled talent - an inspired combination indeed!

This young all-female band can belt out some thunderous sounds, yet just as easily slip into something gentle and very comforting. On tour in the US, the four Scots sisters have thrown off their precocious child folkie tag and are rapidly turning into a Scottish sensation. Get ready to slip into your dancing shoes, for this is one sizzling group you surely won’t want to miss!

"Bursting with evidence of virtuosity, flair & disarming maturity" - Daily Telegraph

The concert will take place at the Tubac Plaza Main Stage next to the “Out Of The Way Galleria” at 29 Tubac Plaza in Tubac, Arizona. All ages welcome. ADMISSION: Ages 12 & up - $15 advance; $18 day of show; Ages 6-11 - $7.50 advance; $9 day of show; 5 & under – Free.
