1. OUT AND ABOUT

-----------------------------------------------------------
--- FIRST FRIDAY SEISIUN THIS FRIDAY
-----------------------------------------------------------

Chef Frank Hand of Flights of Fancy has outdone himself with this month's selection. Join us Friday, September 5 for dinner at the Center of chicken parmesan, smoked salmon with a fettucine alfredo and sauteed vegetables. Dinner is topped off with a chocolate mocha cup (perfect to go with your pint).

Some of our favorite artists are the ones we are acquainted enough to buy a pint for. Ina May Moore, Julie Frye, Robert Schuster, Glenda Walker, Gerald Buechner, Margaret Bogen, Rae Ludke, Mona Vinson, Jim Smith and Virginia Wordsman bring their talent at watercolor back to Center. So come on down and show your support for our hometown artists!

-----------------------------------------------------------
--- DEDICATION OF THE ANNIE MOORE MEMORIAL IN NEW YORK OCT 11 TO FEATURE RONAN TYNAN
-----------------------------------------------------------

The memorial dedication ceremony for the unmarked gravesite of Irish-American historic icon Annie Moore, the first immigrant through Ellis Island in 1892, has been set for Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York. Great-granddaughter and spokesperson for the Annie Moore Memorial Project, Phoenix resident Julia Devous, announced that the event will be free and open to the public. The unmarked gravesite of historic figure "Ellis Island" Annie Moore was discovered in 2006 when noted genealogists corrected history by unveiling her true identity and story.

Special guest will be Ronan Tynan (formerly of the Irish Tenors):

“Ronan is further pleased to announce that he will be singing ISLE OF HOPE, ISLE OF TEARS at the memorial dedication to Annie Moore on October 11th in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York.” www.ronantynan.net

-----------------------------------------------------------
--- BIG MONTH FOR MUSIC
-----------------------------------------------------------

Last week I listed the huge number of shows going on in Arizona over the next two months. This week Arizona will be visited by Old Blind Dogs. In a week and half they will be followed by Derek Warfield at Rosies, then Natalie MacMasters with the Symphony and Hayes & Cahill in September alone. There is a lot to keep track of, so go to www.azirishmusic.com/special_events_highlights.htm to keep up to date.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: Since last week I’ve added Sean Tyrrell in Oct and the Celtic Thunder concernt at the Dodge on Nov 28th]

-------------------------------------------------------------

--- FLAGSTAFF - SUN, SEPT 7
-----------------------------------------------------

Old Blind Dogs in concert When: Sunday, September 7, 2008 at 7:00pm. Doors open at 6pm. Where: The Orpheum Theater, 15 W. Aspen St. Flagstaff Contact: Kari Barton, 928-600-1365 or Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com Description: Old Blind Dogs are a Scottish band that have entertained Flagstaff audiences for 16 years. Simply the best Scottish folk band out there today.

Living Traditions Presentations is excited to bring to you once again, the Old Blind Dogs. This band was our first official presentation ever in October 2004, but under various organizations, Ron and Kari Barton have been bringing Celtic music to Flagstaff for 20 years.

Old Blind Dogs has been one of my favorite bands since they first played in Flagstaff around 1993. They have been through personnel changes over the years and now are back to a four piece band, with a new piper, Ali Hutton. This band is entertaining for audiences of all ages and never disappoint! Come see the Old Blind Dogs September 7, 2008 at 7:00pm (please note the earlier start time) at The Orpheum in downtown Flagstaff. Tickets are available at Animas Trading Company, Rainbow’s End, www.orpheumpresents.com, and Cedar Music. Email

Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com for more information or call 928-600-1365. This concert is brought to you by Living Traditions Presentations.

About the new album:
New CD, new line-up, very recognisable sound...Old Blind Dogs are now Fraser Stone (percussion), Aaron Jones (bouzouki/guitar), Ali Hutton (pipes) and the only remaining founder member Jonny Hardie (fiddle). They continue their habit of many years of treating the tradition with respect...but not too much respect… New-boy vocalist Aaron Jones brings his own sound to the OBDs as well. It's more reminiscent of the intense, occasionally almost snarly Ian F. Benzie sound of yore than of the creamy, melliflous tones of Jim Malcolm, and the OBDs seem to have adjusted their choice of songs to take account of that. – The Living Tradition Magazine.

Awards:
We have recently learned of another award for the album 'Four on the Floor'. The CD picked up the award for best album in the Celtic category of the recent IAP Awards. The Indie Acoustic Project is dedicated to giving recognition to outstanding works of innovative acoustic (or mainly acoustic) music.

SCOTTISH ALBUM OF THE YEAR The ROSAS awards
Four on the Floor – Old Blind Dogs
Simply the best Scottish folk band out there today. They have survived personnel changes and thrived. Aaron, Johnny, Rory, and Frazer have brought all of their amazing talents to this album, holding nothing back. Original arrangements of traditional tunes and songs that will steal your heart away. Live on stage they never disappoint, always true to their traditional heart, Old Blind Dogs are not afraid of change and this album 'Four on the Floor' is a brilliant collection of what Old Blind Dogs are all about. Great stuff, their best album yet.

4. BILL CRAIG RETURNS AFTER A LONG ABSENCE

The Dubliner welcomes Bill Craig this weekend after a long absence. Not everyone has heard Bill, so I thought it might help to give a bit from his biography at www.billcraig.com

“Bill works regularily, and has performed at venues across Canada, the United States, and in Europe. He has shared the stage at festivals with such performers as Eric Bogle, Andy Irvine, Dougie MacLean, Battlefield Band and Mary Black. In 1987, he performed at the Roskilde fest in Denmark with Van Morrison, Paul Brady and Moving Hearts. Bill has played the Glasgow festival three times, Skagen fest in Denmark twice and Canada's largest fest, Mariposa. In the U.S., Bill has played pubs and clubs in such cities as Buffalo, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, San Diego and Washington, D.C. At various times he has performed live on PBS radio, including the Cleveland Poetry project, and live from Standing Rock U. (Kent State) He has also performed throughout Holland, Denmark and the U.K. for twenty years.

Bill Craig's performance is relaxed eclectic, thought provoking, goofy and entertaining. His casual attitude is designed to include, not exclude his audience, be it eight or eight hundred people. Bill puts all his energy into his songs and makes a point of having a good time on stage. This usually translates to his audience having a similar experience.”

Bill Craig will perform this weekend at the Dubliner.at 40th St and Thunderbird.

5. LETTER ABOUT GREAT BIG SEA

George,

Thanks for sending the update each week. There is not much Irish entertainment up here in Spokane. Had to let you know, I became acquainted with the Great Big Sea from a lady I worked wth who was from Nova Scotia. They are fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have 3 of their CD's, and they are a great pub band. So do encourage your readers if they can to hear them in Tucson. Too bad they are not playing in Phx.

Just an aside, the opening number that the Brazen Heads starts their 1st set with, at least when I left last Sept is their song.

Bill Mulholland

[EDITOR’S NOTE: The song he’s referring to is “Yarmouth Town.” I recognized it from the Great Big Sea album “Sea of No Cares”. Great Big Sea will be at Rialto in Tucson on Tue. Oct. 7:. For more info, check www.azirishmusic.com/00000_GBS_2008.htm]

7. MEMO FROM THE KNOCKABOUTS

Hi George,

The Knockabouts had a great time at our old stompin' ground (Charly's) as well as the Coconino County Fair this weekend. Although we do not have any gigs this coming weekend, we will be spending "quality" time together. We are taking a raft trip down the Colorado with The Old Blind Dogs! I know, it sounds really crazy...water, booze and musicians but we are up for the challenge. Assuming we all make it out of the river, we will be at the Pickin' in the Pines Bluegrass and Acoustic Music Festival on September 12 at noon. For more info about this festival please visit www.pickininthepines.org

Thanks,
John
www.knockabouts.org/

[EDITOR’S NOTE: The Pickin' in the Pines Bluegrass and Acoustic Music Festival looks like a fairly big deal. Celtic performers include the Knockabouts, Springfed,Band and Traditional Blend). It will be over Sept 12 to 14].

Seán Tyrrell
Cry of the Dreamer - The Amazing Story of Irish Hero John Boyle O'Reilly

Dan Cassidy
How the Irish Invented Slang - The Secret Language of the Crossroads

John Boyle O'Reilly: 1844 - 1890. Visionary, poet, heart of a rebel, blood of a true-born Irishman. Persecuted, condemned and banished from Ireland to the Penal Colonies of Australia for his political beliefs and activities. The first to escape there on an American whaling ship. Musician and poet Seán Tyrrell's "Cry of the Dreamer - The Amazing Story of Irish Hero John Boyle O'Reilly" brings this forgotten nineteenth century visionary-poet to life in this stunning theatrical presentation. It is a tale woven in song, part spoken-word, part history lesson.

"If you're lucky, you come across a talent like Seán's once or twice in a lifetime. When he sings, I feel alive."
- Brenda Fricker

"'Cry of the Dreamer' is a feast of traditional Irish music. The genuine article."
- Billboard

A native of the slower moving West of Ireland, Sean took his time before committing himself to record. It was time well spent, exposing himself to the experiences of different cultures, musical genres, and literary heritage. Sean was surrounded by music all his life, coming from a family immersed in the musical traditions of his native Galway. During the sixties he performed in the city's premier folk club - the Folk Castle, honing his vocal and instrumental skills, while rubbing the shoulders with a host of celebrated artists who performed there.

Sean emigrated to New York in 1968 and slotted into the folk club scene in Greenwich Village. The early seventies took him west to San Francisco and a diet of Irish music sessions. It was here Sean's reputation as an exceptional singer of songs, took root. Traversing New Hampshire in the mid seventies, he co-founded 'Apples in Winter', a band which was short lived but well recognised.

He returned to Ireland in the late seventies, where he continued to compose, but seldom played in public. In 1978 he accepted employment with the University of Galway, based in the heart of the Burren in County Clare. It's hard to avoid music in this part of Ireland and soon Sean was lured back into the music scene. His ability was recognised and appreciated, even amidst a host of legendary musicians. With a growing reputation, he was invited to 'guest' on several recordings, including two albums with the ex-Moving Hearts uileann piper, Davy Spillane. Swapping the Burren for the sheltered Bell Harbour, close to the border of his native county, Sean divided his time juggling the demands of mussel farming and a re-energised approach to his music.

He became fascinated by the forward thinking poem 'The Midnight Court' (all 1,206 lines of it), written during the 17th Century, by Brian Merriman. He became almost obsessed by the play and a desire to set the work to music. This feat was achieved with much Ęsuccess when the Druid Theatre Galway staged Sean Tyrrell's 'traditional music opera' featuring Sean with a host of talented contemporaries. In the following years the musical has toured extensively around Ireland with the possibility of future international showings.

On the heels of the success of his recordings with Davy Spillane, Sean embarked on his first solo project, "Cry of A Dreamer", recorded on his own label Longwalk Music. The album was released in April, 1994 and was greeted with great critical acclaim, voted Best Folk Album of the Year by both Folk Roots and Hotpress. In 1996 the album was picked up by Hannibal/Rykodisc and was selected for a Spotlight Review by Billboard Magazine calling Sean "the genuine article!" Sean began touring extensively in Ireland, England, the Continent and the USA. He performed at major festivals and concert halls, including the 1996 Irish Folk Festival Tour of Germany, Switzerland and Austria, as a featured solo performer.

In 1999 he released his much anticipated second solo effort, "The Orchard". Again the album was met with critical acclaim, as Sean was voted Best Overall Folk Act and the album was voted Best Folk Album by the readers of Irish Music Magazine. "The Orchard" was also voted the number 2 Roots/Trad Album by Hot Press Critics Poll. This album was followed by extensive touring as larger audiences became exposed to his infectious songs and music.

Sean has contributed music and songs to such projects as, "A Necklace of Wrens" a documentary on the life and Poetry of Michael Hartnett, whose poem "Billy Mulvihill" Sean set to music on "The Orchard. Sean also collaborated with 8 other international artists on a compilation album "Songs of Peace" to commemorate the life and work of Francis Ledwidge who died in the First World War. The album and live concert were conducted in Flanders amid the memories and tragedy that resulted from that atrocity. A recent German film documentary on Sean's native Galway included his performance of a Michael Hartnett poem "Belladonna in the Bar".

Sean has toured Ireland, England, the Continent, America and Australia in the past with: Kevin Glackin and Ronan Brown; Davy Spillane; Three for the Ditch (Sean, Frankie Lane, and comedian Jack Lynch); Paddy Keenan; poet Mary O'Malley.

Sean has expanded his touring profile as he now regularly tours both as a solo act and with a supporting band of various sizes. He is currently embarking on an international tour of America, Ireland, Wales and England with the legendary Tommy Peoples. Tommy and Sean have been neighbours and musical sparring partners for years and are now excited to bring their unique stylings on both traditional and contemporary Irish music to an international audience.
