--- RIP CATHY WOOD

Submitted by Sandy Carroll:

Hi All, Len Wood has scheduled a Celebration of Kathy Wood's life for Saturday, September 13 at Corona Ranch in Laveen from 11:00am - 1:00pm. The address is 7611 South 29th Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, Kathy had asked her friends to consider a donation to one of her favorite charities, including:

* Hospice of the Valley
* The Archives at St. Joseph's/Sr. Madonna
* The Arizona Room at the Phoenix Public Library
* The ICLF Irish Library

The music community is mourning the passing of Cathy Wood.

Marni - She was young and such a great and loving person and an awesome piper!). She did a lot for the Irish & Scottish Communities.

Pat - A memorial for someone who has given so much to the Irish/Celtic community is always appropriate. I was treated so nicely by Kathy and Len, that it really hit me hard.

-------------------------------------------------------

Submited by Pat Anderson:

GET WELL WISHES: Colleen Kelly Beaman, President of the Tucson Sister Cities umbrella group as well as the Tucson-Roscommon Sister Cities, underwent major back and hip reconstruction surgery last week. Phoenix Sister Cities folks are very familiar with Colleen’s high energy!! Since Colleen is from the famous Dancing Kelly Family, she has danced from babyhood and it finally caught up with her. -------------------------------------------------------
--- CORNISH CONNECTION
-------------------------------------------------------

MORE ON SISTER CITIES: Since so many Cornish miners ended up working and settling in Mexico, two Cornish towns have now twinned with Mexican cities: Cambourne with Pachuca, the state capital of Hidalgo, providing them with a town clock that chimes to the tune of Big Ben. Add to that leftover Cornish engine houses, a Methodist church and lots of Cornish surnames. Also, Redruth is twinning with Real del Monte and developing linkes with Magattzi School at Real del Monte. Why not? After all, where do you think the empanada (ahem, pasty) came from?

2. DEREK WARFIELD AT ROSIE’S TUE SEPT 16 - WED. SEPT 17

Noted historian and charismatic founding member of the legendary Wolfe Tones Derek Warfield will be playing an intimate show at Rosie's for ticket holders only promoting his album "Songs for the Bhoys". Accompanied by an excellent five piece group, Derek Warfield's shows are as energetic now as ever. ------------------------------------------------------------
Derek Warfield is a singer, songwriter, noted historian and a charismatic founding member of the legendary Wolfe Tones. For 42 years he has been the voice behind the stirring introductions and author of many famous ballads that have endeared him to countless thousands of fans all over the world.

Considered a legendary figure on the Irish music scene, Derek continues to tour the world, taking with him the story of Ireland, which he has championed for over 40 years.

Accompanied by an excellent five piece group, Derek Warfield's shows are as energetic now as ever, his passion for the Irish ballad stronger than ever. In December 2004, Derek released his 8th solo album, a tribute to the greatest football club and supporters in the world, Glasgow Celtic.

If you like the songs and ballads of Ireland performed at their very very best, then you owe it to yourself to see the living legend that is Derek Warfield 'live' on stage

The following is from a review in the Bay City Times, Michigan: "Irish Music lovers ,may recognize Warfield as the founding member of The Wolfe Tones, a well-known folk band he performed with for almost 40 years before the group split up in 2002.

"The Wolfe Tones were the greatest Irish band in the last half-century," says Denny Hayes, president of The Friends of Celtic Culture.

A Veteran entertainer, 63-year-old Warfield has recorded 21 albums over his musical career, 13 with the Wolfe Tones and 8 on his own. When he performs in Bay City, he will perform with is four-member band, The Sons of Erin.

The Irish troubadour, who has traveled the world performing, has written and recorded more than 60 songs and ballads .

His first album, titled "The Foggy Dew" was written and recorded with The Wolfe Tones in 1964, while his most recent album "Songs for the Bhoys," was recorded in 2004.

Hayes describes Warfield as a "rustic rebel" and simply a must-see.

"This is his 41st year in show business, so he's doing this since the early 80's, late 70's, and he's basically theunofficial historian of Irish culture," Hayes said. "He actually introduces every song, and he talks about what the song is all about. What you get when you listen to him is a little history lesson. The guy is a phenomenal history buff."

--- SUN NOV 9 - LITTLE MISS SHAMROCK COMPETITION
---------------------------------------------------------

Irish Heritage Contest for Girls 6-12 Years Old
2 nd Annual Little Miss Shamrock

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire Committee announces the 2 nd Annual Little Miss Shamrock selection for ages 6-12 on Sunday, November 9 at the Irish Cultural Center at 2 pm. The program is designed to introduce girls of Irish descent and their families to the Arizona Colleen and Rose of Tralee Programs, which are celebrating their 26th and 50th anniversaries, respectively.

Two young ladies will be chosen to ride in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Phoenix and participate in a variety of Irish events throughout their reign. A prize package will be awarded each girl.

Judging is based on her ability to introduce herself on stage and meet new people; to share about her family and being at least a wee bit Irish; her overall well-roundedness in life: school, family, and extracurricular; and poise and manners. The girls will demonstrate a talent with a one to two-minute performance. Applications are due by November 1 and are available at www.azcolleen.org or contact Heather at 602-568-0842.

The competition is not a beauty pageant, but rather a selection process to recognize great up-and-coming communicators in the Arizona Irish Community. Participating builds self-confidence and encourages young people to learn about their Irish origins early in life. The event is open to the public; tickets are $2 each.
-

The next Arizona Colleen will be selected among women ages 18-27 of Irish descent. She will serve as a spokesperson in area events and is awarded a free trip to Ireland and $1,000 in scholarships. Contestants are judged on poise, communication skills, and talent. As the Arizona Rose, she competes in Ireland for a world tour.

BIO

One of the finest duos touring today, Martin and Dennis perform what can best be described as "a conversation between the two of them and the music," intense to humorous, touching on jazz and classical, creating a cross-cultural musical experience. Martin is from from County Clare, and Dennis from Chicago with Irish parents. The duo played to three full and enthusiastic Tucson audiences from 1996 to 1999. Previously,Martin won the All-Ireland Fiddle Championship 6 times and in 1999, he was namedFolk Instrumentalist of the year by BBC Radio. Since that time, they have performed many times on A Prairie Home Companion and toured worldwide. The duo collaborated with Sinead O'Connor in a special stage performance of the book If I Could Read the Sky. They recently completed the score for an award-winning documentary by Dierdre Lynch,Photos to Send, based on photographs of the people of County Clare in 1953. The L.A. Times says of the show: "A climactic display of creativity from a pair of gifted, cross-cultural artists." The Syndey (Australia) Morning Herald calls Martin "the Yehudi Menhuin of the Irish Fiddle."

Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill possess a rare musical kinship, ranking them among the most memorable partnerships of our era. Together they have garnered international renown for taking traditional music to the very edge of the genre. Listeners are held spellbound with the ever-intensifying, fiery performances. The duo is opening the doors of traditional Irish music and releasing its pure, distilled beauty, incorporating sensibilities from the worlds of classical, blues, and jazz.

Martin Hayes has been an All-Ireland fiddle champion six times over and has taken home a National Entertainment Award (an Irish Grammy so to speak). Martin plays in the slow, lyrical style of his native East County Clare. Dennis Cahill, a native of Chicago, is a master guitarist, versed as well in classical, blues, and rock as he is in traditional music. His innovative accompaniment is acknowledged as being a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. In addition to performing with Hayes, Cahill has also worked with Liz Carroll, Eileen Ivers, and Kevin Burke, as well as being a regular at Chicago's session scene, with musicians such as Lawrence Nugent, Liz Knowles, and Kieran O'Hare.

12. WHICH SONG?

In a previous newsletter, Bill Mulholland mentioned that Great Big Sea was coming to Tucson on Oct. 7th at the Rialto Theater. He then mentioned that the Brazen Heads were doing one of their songs.

But which song? My first guess was “Yarmouth Town” from “Sea Of No Cares”. My guess was based on the fact that the Brazen Head’s version of Yarmouth Town is on YouTube.com. But this song was done by many others long before Great Big Sea covered it. My Lyric song list now includes a clip from the late Liam Clancy. www.azirishmusic.com/Lyrics_List.htm#Y

Lee Ann has a theory of what the actual song was. “For clarification purposes, I think the song the gentleman was probably referring to was Lukey's Boat. We never started a set with it but we did play it very early in the first set last year. The song you mentioned, Yarmouth Town is one we only began playing last month. Both songs were at some point covered by Great Big Sea in recordings, but niether song written by them. These are both popular/old traditional songs of the region.” Lee Ann Mackey

It turn out both are traditional songs are on the “Sea Of No Cares” .CD’s.. It’s not like it matters, but Great Big Sea is a great band.
