Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers play acoustic instruments, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric. The quintet is as tight and as versatile as any band in the Celtic music revival." - The Boston Globe

The Tannahill Weavers are one of Scotland's premier traditional bands. Their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Their combination of traditional ballads, foot stomping reels and jigs, driving rhythmic accompaniment, and rich vocals make their performances unforgettable.

Tannahills' unique combination of traditional melodies on pipes, flute and fiddle, driving rhythms on guitar and bouzouki, and powerful three and four part vocal harmonies have taken the musical community by storm. As Garrison Keillor, the host of A Prairie Home Companion, remarked, "These guys are a bunch of heroes every time they go on tour in the States". Sing Out! magazine proclaimed them "...as close to perfect as it gets."

BLOOD BATH BRINGS BOUNTY OF LAUGHTER

"Who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?"

Or, in this case, a cat.

Playwright Martin McDonagh forces theatergoers to repeat Lady Macbeth's ghastly question in The Lieutenant of Inishmore, which Actors Theatre is staging at the Herberger Theater Center.

When someone kills the cat of an Irish terrorist, it sets off a chain of events that leaves the stage awash in blood - literally. The Actors Theatre production uses nearly three gallons of the fake stuff during each performance, splattering the furniture, spurting onto the walls and spilling from the cast.

"I have played in Macbeth, but believe me, I have never dealt with this much blood before," says David Vining, one of the actors.

Or gotten as many laughs, either.

MCDONAGH

McDonagh is unique among contemporary playwrights. He treads the narrow line between over the top and much too much with a skill that Quentin Tarantino would envy. In fact, McDonagh is often compared to Tarantino - when he's not being paired with Monty Python.

Anyone who's seen McDonagh's plays (The Beauty Queen of Leenane at Algonquin Theatre Company and Pillowman at Actors Theatre last season) knows the man is addicted to violence.

Unthinkable things happen, which by rights should be unspeakable, too - except McDonagh parades them in front of his audiences with every gory detail intact.

While Tarantino can be funny - witness Pulp Fiction and certain segments of Kill Bill - he can never top the Irish playwright. One's jaw is laughing as it drops to the floor in The Lieutenant of Inishmore.

"It is violent," admits Oliver Wadsworth, who plays Padraic, the title character, whom director Matthew Wiener sums up in three phrases: "Man loves cat. Cat gets killed. Man goes insane."

Not that Padraic has far to go in that department. The Irish Republican Army wouldn't let him in because it thought him totally around the bend, so Padraic has settled for being a second-string terrorist. He may be short on discipline but he's long on technique - as he demonstrates when Wee Thomas, the cat he left in the care of his father, Donny (Vining), is killed.

To make Padraic work, the actor must "explore a very dark territory," Wadsworth says, "but there is so much absurdity involved that it becomes funny. 'Come on, you really didn't think I would kill you?' Padraic says to his father. 'Yes, I did,' Donny says. Of course, Padraic was holding a gun to his head at the time."

It's a question of "how far can you go, how far can you push the envelope before it no longer funny?" Vining says.

And the answer is . . .

"A lot further than you think."

The retired Arizona State University professor played the role of the father in a production in Florida last year.

"We were surprised at how positively the audience responded to the material," he says. "On opening night, we had a lot of learning to do about holding for the laughs. Things we never thought people would find funny got as big or bigger response than the things we knew would get a reaction."

Wadsworth sees it as a cathartic experience.

"Everyday, we see so much blood and gore on CNN," the New York resident says. "We constantly live with the tensions caused by terrorism. McDonagh feels that it's good to get people together in the safe environment of the theater and work at relieving their anxieties.

"That's why he puts in the jokes. It isn't because he's a smart ass."

A LOT OF BLOOD

Wiener would agree that there's a message in McDonagh's madness but, at the moment, he's dealing with those three gallons of stage blood. Blood isn't something you can pick up and put back on the props table.

"We're not even sure if we can reuse it. We're thinking of it as a perishable problem," he says, laughing.

The production draws heavily on technology developed for films so Wiener hired a special effects expert to supervise the splatter effects.

"In the movies, when you see the blood gushing up a wall, that's not real - they're using a blood cannon," he says. "Well, we have four blood cannons in this show. I don't want to say any more about it. I don't want to give away the good stuff."

He does worry that potential theatergoers might turn squeamish.

"In spite of the subject matter, this play is deeply entertaining," he says. "The cycle of revenge is ridiculed. McDonagh takes it to its illogical conclusion - and it's very funny. When we can laugh at things that normally scare the hell out of us, that's a good thing."

5. KNOCKABOUTS CD RELEASE PARTY THIS SAT AT UPTOWN BILLIARDS

Hi George,

The Knockabouts are ready to release our latest CD, "I'LL HAVE A PINT WITH YOU" and we are very excited about it. The CD release party just so happens to fall on our annual Halfway to St. Paddy's party at Uptown Billiards on Saturday, September 15th at 9PM. This is also the 5th anniversary of the Knockabouts so we have many reasons to raise some hell! The new CD offers traditional tunes along with some original compositions and arrangements and it has a very "live" feel to it. We hope to see some of our friends come up from the valley (if you do, please observe all the traffic signs for the one way streets) and enjoy the party. Of course , the Knockabouts will 'Have a Pint with You"

Thanks
John
www.knockabouts.org

PS. We had a great concert at the Flagstaff Arboretum last week with the largest crowd they had all season. It was an outdoor event and our backdrop was a huge meadow with the San Francisco Peaks in the background. As we started to play a herd on elk moved thru the meadow - this is why we live in Flagstaff! I'll send some picks if they are any good.

A young Irishman leaves his home in Roscommon, Ireland, at age 16, never to return, destined to die without a family, at age 44, in faraway Mexico. In the interim he finds himself becoming one of the most important and distinguished Irish military men on the American Spanish Frontier in the eighteenth century. His name: Don Hugo O'Conor, Knight of the order of Calatrava, Colonel of infantry in His Majesty's armies and Commandant Inspector of the frontier posts of New Spain.

On a hot Arizona day in August 1775 Hugo (Hugh) O'Conor stood by the banks of the Santa Cruz and selected and marked out the spot, a place know as San Augustin del Tucson. This was his most lasting legacy: locating a new Presidio at San Augustin del Tucson on August 20, 1775. Today, the date is considered Tucson's birthday and O'Conor its illustrious founder.

Irish playwright and actress Caroilin Callery, of Roscommon, Ireland, is writing and producing an ambitious and exciting new play covering the life and times of Tucson founder Hugo O'Conor. She has carried out extensive research into the Irishman's life and has recently spent several weeks in Southern Arizona searching out O'Conor facts. Ms. Callery firmly believes there is a great play in the complexity of the O'Conor character and in the era in which he lived. His story interlaces naturally with the story of the Spanish army, the Spanish Mission and the native Indians, in an interesting inter-cultural melting pot that has grown into the thriving city of Tucson today. This is not just a project to create a show for a short tour, but will be the creation of a piece of literature on a most interesting character for the historical canon of both Tucson and Ireland.

Written and produced in Roscommon, Ireland, the play will come to Tucson for a run in 2008, under the patronage of the Tucson-Roscommon Sister Cities. There are also plans to present the play at several schools in Tucson and our hope is that this will be an enriching adventure into the past for hundreds of children. We are also hoping to have the play presented in Phoenix. This should not be considered an exclusively Irish community event, but a Tucson and Arizona, multi-cultural opportunity to look back in time at our home, it's native people and the man from across the sea, who had perhaps, a divine vision of what could be.
