Van Morrison, considered one of the most influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll, is coming to Cricket Pavilion on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. With no opening act, the show will begin at 7:30 P.M. SHARP.

Morrison released the Lost Highway album, Pay The Devil, earlier this year. Pay The Devil is comprised of 15 tracks, three originals and 12 covers of some of Van Morrison's favorite classic country songs, including "Your Cheatin Heart," "Things Have Gone To Pieces," and "Big Blue Diamonds."

For 40 years, Van Morrison has continued to be an important and vibrant artist. He has never rested on his laurels when he easily could have with such important albums as Astral Weeks (1968), Moondance (1970), Tupelo Honey (1971), Irish Heartbeat (1988) right up to the critically acclaimed Magic Time (2005). Pay The Devil is another shinning example of an artist following his muse and being as vital today as he was when he began.

--- SAT: SEPT 30 - MARIAN TOMAS GRIFFIN: AN IRISH GIRL'S JOURNEY

[EDITOR'S NOTE: I saw Marian Griffin earlier this year and she is an extraordinary actress. As one of Margaret O'Carroll's (Kerry Records) performers, I have come to expect outstanding talents. However, when you check her biography, you can see she's big time.]

With suitcase in hand, Irish actor Marian Tomas Griffin brings us on a journey through childhood days in 1980's Ireland; school days, teenage life, first kisses, Irish mothers, visiting Yanks, departures and losses and more in this hilarious, feisty yet poignant journey of a modern Irish woman. Storytelling at its very best! A must see!

BIOGRAPHY

Born in New York City and raised in County Mayo, Ireland, Marian Tomas Griffin has been a part of the New York music, theatre and film scene for the past 8 years.

As a member of the Irish Repertory Theatre Marian made her debut in Frank McCourt's The Irish and How They Got That Way. Time Out Magazine called her the most talented of the lot and John Simon of New York Magazine said Marian, who acts, sings and plays several instruments, besides looking like a more delicate Maureen O'Hara, I simply lost my heart to. At the Irish Repertory Theatre Marian also appeared in The Shaughran and she has had the honor of appearing on Broadway for the past 5 years as part of the Irish Repertory Gala Benefit on Broadway with such stars as Gabriel Bryne, Sinead Cusak, Tate Donovan, Eric Stoltz, Angela Lansbury, Liam Neeson, Vanessa Redgrave, Milo O'Shea, Frances Sternhagan and Kevin Spacey.

On screen Marian has worked with Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford in Columbia Picture's The Devil's Own, in Nye Heron's Sax & Violins and the soon to be released Days of Darkness. Marian starred in CBS' As The World Turns (Mary Mennihan) and in 2004, appeared as Typhoid Mary in the Emmy-nominated "Most Dangerous Woman in America" on PBS.

As lead singer and guitarist with many traditional Irish bands including Aisling Eire or as a solo performer Marian has entertained audiences all over New York City at venues like Tir Na Nog, Fitzer's, Tommy Makem's, Fibber McGee's, Paddy Reilly's and the Guinness Fleadh to name just a few. Her first CD Tales Of Erin released in 1998 featured the single Angela's Smile inspired by Frank McCourt's Pulitzer prize winning memoir Angela's Ashes. When Conor McCourt approached Marian to provide a song for his documentary The McCourt's of Limerick which aired on Cinemax in March 1998, he had no idea of the phenomenal reaction Angela's Smile would bring. The first national exposure of this song was Marian's appearance with Frank McCourt on CBS's Off-Tenth. Her second CD Downtown Monday Night was released in March 2002. In December 2006 Marian starred in Kerry Records production of AN IRISH CHRISTMAS at the 2,000 seat Marsee Auditorium, El Camino College, Torrance.

--- FRI OCT. 13 - GERRY O'BEIRNE AND ROSIE SHIPLEY

7:30 PM $15

Gerry O'Beirne last performed at the ICC along with Andy M. Stewart. This time he is joined by fiddle player Rosie Shipley.

In addition to Andy M Stewart and Rosie, Gerry performs with Patrick Street and has toured with Sharon Shannon Band, The Waterboys, Martin Hayes, Kevin Burke and Andy Irvine. Gerry started teaming up with Rosie Shipley as part of Willow Band along with piper E. J. Jones.

Gerry has a lot of friends in the Phoenix. He helped Brid Dower with her album, "Comings and Goings" and wrote the opening track, "Shades of Gloria" and played guitar. In the process, he got to know several local musicians such as John Good and Steve Colby plus sound engineer Kyle Harris. Kyle will do the sound for the concert.

I have been hearing about Rosie through the grapevine for several years, but this will be her first visit to Phoenix. Willow Band was formed by piper E.J. Jones, formerly of Clandestine, of Houston, Texas. For player of E.J. Jones to select a fiddle player from Baltimore, rather than someone local, was because Rosie is more than just pretty good. Then, when you consider the level of players Gerry O'Beirne usually plays with, I'm really looking forward to hear her play.

This promises to be an outstanding concert.

--- FRI OCT 20 - SOUTH MOUNTAIN CC STORY TELLERS "SCARY IRISH STORIES FOR HALLOWEEN"

Liz Warren and the South Mountain CC story tellers return in time for Samhain/Halloween with Scary Irish stories. Get ready to get in spirit of Samhain.

7. NEW TUCSON IRISH DANCE SCHOOL LED BY ACCOMPLISHED DANCER

Former World Championship medalist and 'Riverdance' lead opens Tucson-based Maguire Academy of Irish Dance

Tucson, AZ, August 2, 2006 - Yesterday was the first day of classes for the new Tucson-based Maguire Academy of Irish Dance. Headed by Darren Maguire, TCRG, the new school is currently offering classes for students aged from 4 through adult, at skill levels from absolute beginner to championship, at two studios in metro Tucson. The school's central Tucson classes are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the school's studio at 2921 E. Grant Road (Grant and Country Club). Northwest classes will be offered on Fridays at the 'Gotta Dance' studio at 4249 W. Ina Rd., beginning on August 25th.

Maguire relocated to Tucson to open the Maguire Academy after 'hanging up' his Riverdance shoes just this summer. Having danced with the world-renowned show for ten years, Maguire performed on many the world's most notable stages, including Radio City Music Hall, The Kremlin and the Great Hall of the People. During those travels, he managed to find the time to earn his TCRG-the certification required to teach competitive Irish dance under the rules of the Dublin, Ireland-based Irish Dancing Commission.

Maguire may have danced before he walked-his experience with Irish dance began early. He was born into a dancing family, as his parents, Kathleen and Michael Maguire, founded the highly-regarded Maguire O'Shea Academy of Irish Dance just outside London, England nearly thirty-five years ago. Maguire and each of his five siblings inherited the talent, and all have won major dance titles, the most recent being his youngest sister, Ellie, taking first place at the World Championships this past Spring. Darren's own championship record is long. Before joining Riverdance in 1996, he had earned first place at many regional and National competitions, including the Great Britains, All England, All Ireland and the Regional Oireachtas; and a second place in the World Championships.

"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to teach dance in Tucson," said Maguire. "The Irish community here is immensely supportive-we're off to a brilliant start. I'm seeing lots of talent and enthusiasm, and look forward to developing the dancers, and the school."

For more information about the Maguire Academy of Irish Dance and classes or performances in Tucson, or to book a performance, contact Cathy Harris: englishcathy@cox.net or 881-5880.

8. NEW SHOWCASE FOR VOCALISTS

Attention Guitar Players!

We are looking for players performing instrumental guitar music. We are looking for guitarists who would like to perform original (mostly), instrumental music.

All styles invited: jazz, electronica/looping, fingerstyle, slide, classical, bluegrass, folk, blues. . . .

Along with Barnes & Noble,
I am organizing a series of Guitar Nites to showcase local players performing their own music, their own way!

Our small performing space means we are looking for soloists or duos, a minimum of equipment and fuss loading in and out, and of course, no money (but invaluable exposure!). I will pitch your websites and resume to the audience, and you will have the opportunity to meet and greet . . .

Send your tape or CD (incl. return postage) (or wav file or web address) to:

9. MEMO FROM CHRISTOPHER DEAN

Hi George,

Hope that this finds you well.

Now that the summer heat is starting to leave Arizona, it's safe for "heat wimps" like me to venture over on tour. I have some upcoming public performances that I was hoping you might share with your members.

Wednesday, November 1st, 7:00 pm
Palm Creek Golf & RV Resort, 1110 N. Henness Rd., Casa Grande, AZ 85222
$8 520-876-8980

Monday, November 6th, 7:00 pm
Sunland Village Auditorium, 4601 E. Dolphin Ave., Mesa, AZ 85206
$8 480-832-9003, 10/13/06

Tuesday, November 14th, 7:00 pm
Sunrise RV Resort, 1403 W. Broadway Ave., Apache Junction, AZ 85220
$6 480-288-4968, 11/7/06

Celtic Guitarist Christopher Dean
...Irish, Scottish, English, and American traditional and contemporary folk music
mixed with Celtic lore, history, stories, and humor.

Chris is not just a gifted exponent of Celtic music. He tells engaging and humorous stories, and weaves Celtic lore and history with his music - the familiar trinity of jigs and reels - haunting airs that take you far away to a land of the imagination - and laments that evoke past glory.

Starting a professional career in music in 1966, Chris has performed at concert venues with "The Rolling Stones", "The Rascals", "The Doors", and more recently with Alasdair Fraser, Men of Worth, The Wicked Tinkers, Brian Baynes, and Skyedance, to name a few.

Chris' third album, Celtic Journey, was released in January '06 to rave reviews. All three of his albums have been sold world wide, receiving radio play in Canada, U.S., Europe, and Australia. His tunes have also been released on three compilation albums in Italy, five in Japan, and one here in the U.S.

"...American finger-picking guitarist heads up a collection of Irish and Scottish tunes and airs. The difference is that many of his choices are songs, including Bobby Sand's "Back Home in Derry". These turn up trumps, his subtlety of touch working wonders; he can jig it too, but it is the song airs where he reigns supreme." Ian Kearey, Folk Roots (fRoots) Magazine, London, England

"...many guitarists seem to concentrate on playing the instrument rather than the music. The music of Dean is exactly the opposite of this position. Very rarely have we heard a more sensitive and expressive guitarist who communicates through his Taylor guitar." Alfredo De Pietra, Keltika Magazine, Milan, Italy

"If there's any truth to the old saying, "You can tell a lot about a man by the work he does," then Christopher Dean is a well-rounded, confident-but-not-flashy man of substance."

"Listening to his third solo album, Celtic Journey, is the equivalent of lying in the soft green grass on one of Scotland's rolling hills. The music commands control of all your senses, easing your mind back into a calmer place."

"Complicated, intricate chord patterns push along every track, and there's not a minute left unmastered. Dean takes the time to let his nimble fingers execute each measure delicately. As a result, he installs meaning, clout, and pride into each song."

"Even though this is an album backed by impressive credentials, with expert production from an artist who obviously did his homework, what makes it enjoyable to listen to is the beauty of music. None of the qualifications matter, just the work. Celtic Journey is all substance." Kate Kowsh, The San Diego Troubadour
