6. MEMO FROM THE KNOCKABOUTS - MOLLY BRANNIGANS ON SAT

Hey George,

The Knockabouts have a busy couple of weeks coming up and I wanted to give you all the info. First of all, the Knockabouts opened the Pickin in the Pines Bluegrass and Acoustic festival and had a great time. THe festival is very well run and they have paid alot of attention to details and really made the entertainers feel comfortable. Here is are the upcoming dates:

September 19 Uptown Billiards, 9PM, Flagstaff "Halfway to St. Patrick's Day"
Uptown Billiards is on Leroux Street in downtown FLagstaff and this is always a great party for us.
September 20 Rosie McCaffrey's 11- 2 "Halfway to St. Patrick's Day"
September 20 Molly Brannigans 9PM
September 27 Verde Valley River Festival, Dead Horse State Park, Cottonwood 1-2

Tim is an outstanding musician and is working hard to learn all of our music! A trombonist with the Flagstaff Symphony and member of the NAU music faculty, Tim will be a great addition to the Knockabouts.

8. MEMO TONY NORRIS

Dear George,

I do believe it's Autumn. Acres of golden sunflowers cover what were once dry-farmed bean and wheat fields in Doney Park. Side oats gramma grass and pig weed bend over with the weight of tiny birds harvesting the heavy seed heads. The nights are deliciously cool and the morning air like rare wine. " We don't care if the frost's a'coming by and by."

Last weekend we were at the third annual Pickin' In The Pines Bluegrass and Acoustic Music Festival. http://pickininthepines.org/lineup.html Sure they featured nationally famous bands that can be heard at any BG festival in the country but more importantly you can hear local Arizona bands in a truly great venue. Groups like Muskellunge Bluegrass, Reno And Sheila Mccormick, The Knockabouts And Traditional Blend. My Band, The Springfed Band Started things off at 10am on Saturday morning. I Emceeed Sunday morning till 1pm. There was also be short "tweener" acts between the featured bands by many fine local Flagstaff performers and the wonderful Chuck Cheesman will be doing his childrens shows. Perhaps the best music of the weekend will be played round the campfires after hours.

Many of you know about the fine job Barry Malpas is doing with THE FLAG FOLK PROJECT http://www.flagfolkproject.org. FFP is a monthly coffeehouse and open mike that happens each 3rd Friday at The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. On Friday Sept 19th one of my favorite performers will be featured-- Aaron Norris, guitarist and folk singer. Aaron cut his teeth on the fiddle and banjo music of moonshine parties in the dark hollers of West Virginia and he grew up to find his voice in punk, blues and country. He has played the streets of Prague, Amsterdam and New Orleans and the beaches of Mexico and wherever he goes his music is inflamed by versatility, energy, commitment and an intense vocal style. His Arizona bands have included Tex Watson's Swingers Convention and The Backsliders. An accomplished songwriter, the title cut from his CD, "Used Car," was featured on NPR's CAR TALK.

You can look forward to a fine evening of folk, country, rock and original tunes when Aaron takes the stage with his guitar.
• 7:30 - 8:30 ~ Open Mic Session
• 8:30 - 8:45 ~ Refreshments at Intermission
• 8:45 - 9:45 ~ Aaron Norris At the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 510
N. Leroux Street, Flagstaff, AZ (Between Elm and Fine Avenues) Mark your calendars for a special concert at Flag Folk Project with Sara Grey and Kieron Means- Traditional Folk Musicians from England hosted by Bill Burke coming up Oct 6th. More on that later.

Sept 20th 11am I'm doing a reading of banned childrens books at Bookmans [dare I say wee wee and poo poo?] Bill Burke and I play at Bookmans the next day 2-4pm and I'm back on the 28th with special guests Elena Gonzales and Katie Carr and some fresh tunes.

Remember: He who steals corn from my garden will be charged with stalking.

Ya'll be well,

Tony

9. HAYES AND CAHILL VISITS ARIZONA IN SEPT 26-28

-----------------------------------------------------------
--- FRI 26 - CLINE LIBRARY IN FLAGSTAFF
-----------------------------------------------------------

Friday, September 26, 2008, Flagstaff audiences will once again be amazed by the Irish music duo, Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill. They have come through Flagstaff twice before and the people loved them!

Martin Hayes has been an All-Ireland Fiddle Champion six times over, has taken home a National Entertainment Award (like an Irish Grammy) and was named Folk Instrumentalist of the Year in 1999 by the BBC Radio Awards. His fiddling is representative of his native East Clare style, slow and lyrical. But don't let that fool you, he is sure to have you out of your seat at least once during the show!

Dennis Cahill is a native of Chicago, born to parents from County Kerry. He is as well-versed in classical, blues, and jazz, as he is in traditional music. His innovative accompaniment has been acknowledged as a major breakthrough for guitar in Irish traditional music.

The musical rapport between Hayes and Cahill is so strong that it is often said they appear to be playing one instrument, “working on a seemingly telepathic level,” as CMJ describes it. While Martin pursues a melody, Dennis explores the harmony and rhythms within the tunes. He seems to know intuitively Hayes’ next move, consistently matching it with astonishing skill and grace. Their live performances weave tunes that stretch up to thirty minutes long, in what Hayes describes as “a three-way conversation between the two of us and the music.”Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill possess a rare musical kinship. Together they have garnered international renown for taking traditional music to the very edge of the genre, and holding listeners spellbound with their slow-building, fiery performances. The duo opens the doors of traditional Irish music and releases its pure, distilled beauty, while incorporating sensibilities from the worlds of blues and jazz. The New York Times calls them “a Celtic complement to Steve Reich’s quartets or Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain.”

Don't miss this concert of traditional Irish music with subtle infunsions of classical, jazz, and blues!

Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill will perform Friday, September 26, 2008 at 8:00pm at the Cline Library Auditorium on NAU's Campus. Tickets are $25 with a $2 discount to members of NACHS, FFOTM, Seniors, NAU/CCC Faculty and staff. Student and Child tickets are only $15! Tickets are available at NAU Central Ticketing, Cedar Music, and www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, email Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com or call 928-600-1365.

Dim Cyfarfod

(Dim Kuh-var-vod)

There is no meeting during September!

We will not meet this month, and the October meeting will be at a different time and place than usual. You will have to be alert and read the next bulletin or check on our web site. We are joining the worldwide celebration of renowned Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas’, birthday. This occurs toward the end of October, so we will have our meeting at a pub on a Saturday in late October.

The Irish Cultural Center/Hance Park is the setting for the Irish Festival the first Saturday of October (our usual meeting time and place), and we encourage everyone to attend this. See their news at azirish.org

Looking Ahead

In November our meeting time is again pre-empted by the Tucson Celtic Festival, so our next meeting at the Irish Cultural Center will be the first Saturday in December.

For additional information, please contact the Irish Cultural Center at 602-258-0109. Many of their events are of interest to all with Celtic heritage. To receive notices of other events at the Center visit their web site at www.azirish.org
