Irish Girl - Review

With suitcase in hand, Irish actor Marian Tomas Griffin brings us on a journey through childhood days in 1980's Ireland; school days, teenage life, first kisses, Irish mothers, visiting Yanks, departures and losses and more in this hilarious, feisty yet poignant journey of a modern Irish woman. --- FRI, OCT 13 - CONCERT WITH GERRY O'BEIRNE AND ROSIE SHIPLEY

7:30 PM $15

Gerry O'Beirne of County Clare is a well know singer/song writer but is perhaps even more famous as one of the top guitar players anywhere. A native of Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland, Gerry O'Beirne is a self-taught master of the 6 and 12 string guitars and an inspired singer/songwriter. Whether performing solo or with other artists, his unique musical stylings and poignant original songs coupled with a passionate love of the music draw his audience into an intimate circle in the largest concert hall or the smallest pub. Gerry has appeared on NPR's Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" radio show.

Besides working with Andy M Stewart, Gerry O'Beirne performs with Patrick Street and has toured with the Sharon Shannon Band, The Waterboys, Martin Hayes, Kevin Burke and Andy Irvine. He has performed at the White House, opened for the Grateful Dead, and played electric guitar with Marianne Faithfull. He recently contributed to albums by Paul Brady in Nashville and back in Ireland with traditional singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh who beautifully sang two of Gerry's songs on her new solo album, Western Highway and The Isle of Malachy.

Rosie Shipley grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, surrounded by traditional Irish music and dance, and in rural Nova Scotia, Canada, home of the famous Cape Breton-style of Scottish traditional fiddle playing. Rosie had her first violin lesson at age three and, when she was eight, began to learn traditional tunes from fiddler Brendan Mulvilhill. Along with her brothers, Rosie spent a portion of her summers when she was a teenager in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, at the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts where she studied fiddle with Sandy MacIntyre and piano with Ryan MacNeill.

Rosie has toured with The Willow Band (with Gerry O'Beirne and EJ Jones) and as a guest with Cherish the Ladies. Today, she tours with singer-songwriter Gerry O'Beirne. When she is not on the road, Rosie teaches fiddle to students young and old at her popular music studio in Baltimore. In addition to her two albums on Shipwhistle's label, Rosie contributed as a session musician to EJ Jones' solo album The Willow (which precipitated formation of The Willow Band) and to Zoe Mulford's upcoming solo CD.

[EDITOR'S NOTE:You can pick up a copy at the Irish Cultural Center's gift shop in downtown Phoenix (please call them for availability). Definitely check out Sheila's webside. Here's a piece from the biography section]

Both of my parents are from Ireland; Mom, Veronica, is from Mayo and Dad, Colm, is from Leitrim. My Dad played fiddle when he was younger and wanted me to play. My father loved Irish music severely. I started violin when I was 6yrs old with Maureen Glynn-Connolly.

I took lessons from Maureen in Brooklyn and started competing when I was 7, in the NY Fleadh Cheoil. I later on "graduated" to lessons in the Breffini Inn, in Sunnyside Queens, with about 40 other students playing fiddles, piano accordions flutes, whistles, button accordions, piano, drums and bodhran's. It was really incredible. Maureen Glynn played all these instruments, she taught us by ear, and Dad drove me to every lesson.

It wasn't that Maureen just taught us tunes, it was that she was teaching us music. Her passion for music was so overwhelming that she made it exciting to learn. My Dad was at every performance, encouraging me every step of the way, and sharing everything he loved about music.

I competed in the NY Fleadh and the All-Ireland for roughly 11 years, earning 12 All Ireland titles, along with the Joe Cooley Ceili Band.. Although we were practicing and rehearsing a lot of the year for the competitions, we also played at all different sorts of events. I was 11 yrs old the first time I went to Ireland and competed in the All-Ireland. I competed, and played festivals, concerts, benefits, dances, workshops, radio and TV shows, in NYC and Ireland with my friends from Maureen's school in NYC and Ireland for 13 years.

While in Phoenix, Arizona I played with a number of Irish folk rock bands: Ashling, the Clare Voyants, O'Carroll's Gate, the McMorrows, the Brid Dower Band...Jazz bands: Subterranean Jazz...Country Western: Jadi & the Overdrive; Irish traditional bands: Glen Road, Realta, Rabharta...I also played fiddle for Michael Flatley's, "Lord of the Dance". My last year in Arizona was spent hosting an open Irish session at Rosie McCaffrey's with a wonderful harper, Chris Boydston.]

5. NEWS FROM FLAGSTAFF

WE HAVE SEVERAL BIG EVENTS COMING UP--BUT FIRST. . .

HAPPY "TALK LIKE A PIRATE" DAY (SEPTEMBER 19)! We wouldn't mention this except for the Celtic twist to it. Most people think that pirates have "cockney accents," but the stereotypical pirate has a Cornish accent based on the performance of Long John Silver by actor Robert Newton in the 1950 Disney version of "Treasure Island." He was from Cornwall, and his over-the-top performance and native accent are the reason people think that's what a pirate sounded like. Of course, pirates came from all nationalities. But the pop culture image is firmly embedded, and Robert Newton is the reason why.

TUCSON TAPAS DINNER AND WHISKEY TASTING. The Tucson Celtic Festival Association will present a Whisky Tour of the Celtic Lands at O'Shaughnessy's Song Hall and Supper Club in Tucson on Saturday, September 30. This will include a Tapas Style Dinner and Whiskey Tasting, as well as entertainment by Seven Pipers Pipes and Drums and a Mariachi Band. Proceeds will benefit the Tucson Celtic Festival and Scottish Highland Games coming up in November. For tickets, call 520-954-9411 or visit the website www.tucsoncelticfeatival.org.

TUCSON GAMES AND FESTIVAL. The Tucson Festival happens this year on Saturday, November 4. But a wonderful banquet, torchlight parade, and kickoff ceremony will take place on Friday, November 3. For more information, call Association President Asherah Caldwell at 520-807-9509.

IRISH LANGUAGE INTENSIVE: The Phoenix Irish Language workshop with linguists Walter and Maureen Stock will take place December 2-3, at the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix. There will be an Irish Storytelling session on Friday night, December 1, and a Celtic Spirituality workshop on Monday, December 4. For more information and registration application, see the current issue of THE INDEPENDENT CELT or contact Pat McCrossan at 602-254-6094.

SCOTTISH GAELIC CLASSES. Rick Ferguson, who recently returned from Scotland where he studied Scottish Gaelic, will soon be starting a Scottish Gaelic language class and conversation group in Flagstaff.. If you are interested in receiving more information, please reply to this email--or call Kathleen at 928-779-3817.

PIPING WEEKEND. Pipers--last year's very successful "Arizona Piping Weekend" will be repeated this year on December 9-10. On Saturday, December 9, Master Teacher Iain Macey will teach both a beginning an advanced piobaireachd workshop. On Sunday, December 10, a non-sanctioned piping competition will be held for Grades 5-1. Cost is only $5 to compete, and you do not need to join an association. This is a great way to get experience in competing--for new pipers and for experienced pipers before the regular WUSPBA competition season starts. For more information, contact Len Wood at lwagecy@cox.com or at 602-708-8081.

THE OCTOBER INDEPENDENT CELT--containing more information on the above events, as well as news and features on the Celtic nations worldwide, and coming events in the state of Arizona--is now out. If you are not a subscriber and would like to receive a sample copy, please respond to this email.

OKAY--DON'T FORGET--TALK LIKE A CORNISH PIRATE TODAY! AAAARGH!
