---------------------------------------------------------------------

--- SAT. SEPT 30 - MARIAN TOMAS GRIFFIN: "AN IRISH GIRL'S JOURNEY"
---------------------------------------------------------------------

8:00 PM $15

"It's Not Your Old Man's Sodam And Begorrah "
By T.S Kerrigan
American Reporter Theater Critic
www.kerryrecords.com/irishgirls_reviews.htm#reviews

LOS ANGELES -- Marian Tomas Griffin, a girl from Killa, County Mayo born in New York, acts, sings, and plays guitar in this solo show that is American in format and quintessentially Irish in subject matter. It is a candid, humorous rite of passage for an American audience with some sophistication in things Irish.

Solo shows are basically of two types. There is the historical, "Belle of Amherst" variety, and then there is the actor's biographical foray (in its most extreme form a kind of "I'm Putting my Act Together and Taking it Out on You"). While Griffin's play is an example of the second type, happily she eschews ego for humor, much of it directed at herself.

Oh, to be sure, there is a cliche here and there about being Irish and a Roman Catholic that seems to make American audiences more comfortable, but there is mostly a lot of originality in this show that will leave you sympathetic to Ms. Griffin and wondering, perhaps, whether there is anything much left of the Irish culture she knew as a girl in the shadow of the Celtic Tiger Economy of recent years.

There is, however, no such shadow over this essentially upbeat show.

The songs are beautifully rendered and slip seamlessly into the narrative. She even manages to make that old sentimental chestnut "Danny Boy" come to life. The highlights of the narrative lies in her clever mimicking of the Irish characters she grew up with in County Mayo. She is an excellent mimic.

Though the play begins in Ireland, in midstream the action shifts to New York, where Ms. Griffin wields her satirical scalpel effortlessly and with hilarious results. Here mimicry of New York types is as good as it was in the Irish party of the show. Again there is the occasional cliche, but the actress transcends all with her engaging way and beautiful voice. The confidence she has in herself and her material is sustained during the two hours sans intermission that she is before us.

Directing a single actor can require as much of a director as handling an entire cast. Margaret O'Carroll, who has had her finger in a number of theatrical pies of late, comes through with just the right balance here, keeping Ms Griffin in focus throughout.

Places like the Celtic Arts Centre can use more original work of this kind. They are lucky to have a show with as much verve as this one.

"An Irish Girl's Journey." Written by Marian Tomas Griffin.
Directed by Margaret O'Carroll. Starring Marian Tomas Griffin.

BIOGRAPHY:
Singer/Songwriter/Actress Marian Tomas Griffin was born in the US and raised on the west coast of Ireland in a town called Killala in County Mayo.

Onstage as a member of New York's fabled Irish Repertory Theatre she starred in the long-running Off-Broadway hit "The Irish & How They Got That Way" by Frank McCourt. On screen Marian could be seen opposite Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt in "The Devil's Own". And recently Marian played opposite Irish Comedian/Writer Brendan O'Carrol in his directorial debut "Sparrow's Trap". Daytime audiences will recognize her from her role as Mary Mennihan (Psycho Nanny) on CBS's "As The World Turns."

In addition to acting, Marian is a major presence in the Irish Music scene, Marian's latest CD is "Downtown Monday Night"

--- FRI. OCT 13 - CONCERT BY GERRY O'BEIRNE AND ROSIE SHIPLEY

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
7:30 PM $15

BIOGRAPHIES

GERRY O'BEIRNE has left an inimitable mark on the face of Irish music with his skills as a producer, musician, and songwriter. An ex-member of Patrick Street, he acted as producer for the supergroup's Irish Times album and for numerous other albums by artists such as Kevin Burke, Martin O'Connor, and Andy Stewart. As a guitarist, he performed with Marianne Faithfull, played at the White House, and appeared as the Grateful Dead's opening act. His songs have been recorded by Celtic artists Mary Black and Maura O'Connell, among others. The singer/songwriter also recorded as a solo artist. The magazine Performing Songwriter named his first release, Half Moon Bay, one of the top dozen independent records of 2000.

The self-taught guitarist is a native of Ireland's County Clare. His early years were divided between Ireland's western regions and Ghana. O'Beirne drew musical inspiration from these diverse locations, as well as from superstars of the day that included the Beatles and Bob Dylan. For a time he worked in London, where he purchased his first guitar. He eventually learned to play both the 12- and six-string varieties. After working in London, he headed home to Ireland, where traditional Irish music enticed him. ~ Linda Seida, All Music Guide www.allmusic.com

ROSIE SHIPLEY is to the manner born, one might say. At the Shipwhistle site, you'll find information about her musical family's studio in Baltimore, lessons, and more. Her debut album (with pianist Matt Mulqueen), At Home, features her brothers Peter and Trevor on pipes, whistle, flute, and fiddle. Rosie was raised in Baltimore in an Irish music and dance atmosphere, but also in rural Nova Scotia, from whence the legendary Cape Breton style fiddlers come. When not teaching fiddle or on tour with Lisa, she is frequently performing with singer songwriter Gerry O'Beirne or Cherish the Ladies.

--- SAT. OCT 28 - CELTIC SPRING HEADLINES ARIZONA IRISH FAIRE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix, AZ ~ The Sixth Annual Arizona Irish Festival is coming to the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix on Saturday, October 28, 2006. The Festival celebrates historic and modern Ireland and commemorates the Irish in America and all over the world.

America's Got Talent finalists Celtic Spring is an exciting and unique fiddle and dance band composed of the five Wood family children on fiddles and in dance shoes, joined by their father on the traditional Irish drum, the bodhran. Celtic Spring's awe-inspiring performances feature a rich variety of music from the Celtic lands and beyond, including original compositions, with unique arrangements that range in expression from lyrical beauty to dance tempo exuberance. www.celticspringband.com..

Celtic Spring will appear on Channel 3, October 27th, LIVE to promote the festival. Tune in to KTVK, Channel 3 at approximately 8:50am!

The traditional stone buildings at the Center, including a replica of a County Clare cottage, provide the backdrop for the Festival. Stage performances will feature traditional ballads and Irish rock 'n' roll; storytelling and genuine blarney; and the powerful dancing style that made Riverdance famous. A series of presentations on history, literature, genealogy, and traditional Irish crafts and industry will illustrate the Ireland of yesterday and today.

Hance Park will become an Irish field where visitors can enjoy ancient kings, modern princesses, real pubs and festival grub. Shoppers can purchase trendy Celtic fashion, fine art, CDs, and instruments to make their own music. Those seeking their Irish roots can consult a knowledgeable genealogist. Adults and children are welcome to wear Halloween costumes in celebration of the October 31 holiday that once marked the end of summer for the ancient Celts. A silent auction will offer unique prizes to the bold bidder with good timing, and the winner of the raffle at the end of the day will find tickets to Ireland in his or her hand. Special entertainment will be announced at a later date.
