Irish Cultural Center
1106 N. Central Ave
Phoenix, AZ
602-258-0109 www.azirish.org
Just returning from the hills, glens, back roads and cities of Ireland and Scotland, three South Mountain Community College faculty will share folktales and personal-experience stories from these lands in a storytelling concert on Friday, October 12th.
LynnAnn Wojciechowicz, Doug Bland, and Liz Warren - all faculty with the SMCC Storytelling Institute - will tell "Tales From Ireland and Scotland,"
at 7:30 p.m. at the Irish Cultural Center.
Storytelling is one of the hallmarks of traditional Celtic culture, though not always as familiar to modern audiences as music and dance. Tales from Ireland and Scotland provides a great opportunity to hear new twists on old stories.
For more information, contact Liz Warren at liz.warren@smcmail.maricopa.edu
3. TUCSON MEET YOURSELF THIS WEEKEND
[EDITOR’S NOTE: This information was taken from the Tucson Meet Yourself event website. Unfortunately, they did not give a performance schedule.]
Oct 12th, 13th and 14th
349 W. 31st St., Tucson, AZ 85713
520-792-4806 www.tucsonmeetyourself.org
Traditional music, singing, dance and Special Events from a wide range of ethnic and other traditions found in Tucson are presented to the public.. Celtic performers include Trim the Velvet and the Seven Pipers Scottish pipe band.
TRIM THE VELVET
Trim the Velvet is a traditional Irish band consisting of Mary Bouley on the harp, Mick McQuaid on Uilleann pipes, tin whistles and Irish flute, Don Gest on bodhrán and tin whistles, Jim McConnell on guitar, and William Don Carlos on fiddle.
In addition to playing at a variety of local events, Trim the Velvet has joined the Tucson Pops and top American Irish band, Cherish the Ladies for performances.
Irish music and dancing is an international phenomenon. The five types of Irish music and associated dances are the reel, slip jig, hornpipe, jig, and the set dances.
Set dances are performed to specific tunes which have remained set over time. They are Hard shoe dances. Many set dances come from an approved list of very old tunes, some even referring to Napoleon’s battles or simply representing daily life, like "Kilkenny races".
The first set dances children learn are "St. Patrick’s Day" and "The Blackbird". These are traditional set dances which means the steps don't change. There are non-traditional set dances which can have some individual choreography.
During the 1800's a popular event was a cake dance. A cake would be placed on a stand in the centre of a field as the prize for the best dancer. The winner would of course “take the cake”.
SEVEN PIPERS
Bag Pipes
There is no indication at all in the known historical record of when or where the idea of using an inflated leather bag as an air reservoir for a wind instrument originated.
The very earliest depiction of an object that might be a bagpipe is a terra cotta figure currently residing in Berlin's “Staatliche Museum.” This much-discussed object is generally considered to be the earliest depiction of any sort of bagpipe. It is Hellenistic, probably from Alexandria, and dates, supposedly, to the first century BC. It is controversial, and enigmatic.
Nevertheless, here we are, wondering where these marvelous instruments came from. We commonly find speculations - interesting, useful and entertaining though they may be - presented as fact. For example, there are a few references in biblical passages and other classical writings, images on stone and pottery of uncertain provenance and so on by use of which one could probably spin a tale having God Himself blasting away on a bagpipe. Unfortunately, it is not until much later that any solid and detailed written evidence appears, and even then much of it is barely descriptive enough to be positively identified as referring to bagpipes. So, the writers have left us in the lurch, for all practical purposes, until early modern times.
The situation is not much better when one looks to the early graphic arts. There are numerous wind instruments visible in very old Mediterranean and Asian art and some of the simpler instruments depicted have in some places survived virtually unchanged.

6. FOUNDATION GATE DEDICATION AND PICNIC AT ICC ON SUN OCT 21
The Irish Foundation of Arizona Gate at the Irish Cultural Center is finally a reality, and it is Beautiful! There are many people to thank for their efforts in making this possible: Pat McMorrow who had the original idea to use the symbols of the Shields of the Four Provinces; Paul Ahern, the architect of the ICC, who designed the Gate and worked closely with the contractors; Jimmy O'Connor and his staff who hosted a fun filled fundraiser at O'Connor's Pub in June; Joe Ondyak and his crew at Artistic Iron Design who built and installed the Gate; and everyone who made a contribution toward the project.
To celebrate this wonderful event, there will be a Dedication and Ribbon Cutting ceremony at the Center at 1106 N. Central on Sunday, October 21, 2007. This will be in conjunction with the Fall Picnic which will run from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Everyone is invited to attend and bring their favorite side dish, salad or dessert. $5.00 will cover the cost of the hot dogs and hamburgers. Kids under 12 are admitted free and there will be fun activities for them. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and join in the seisiun.
There will be another exciting silent auction with several photographs of Ireland. Contributions to the auction may be brought the day of the picnic or dropped off at the ICC beforehand. We will also be selling our new baseball caps and visors sporting the American and Irish Flags.
So mark your calendars for October 21 and join us in celebrating the completion of another important part of the Irish Cultural Center and enjoying a lovely fall day with friends and family.

11. TROTTER’S WAKE LOOKING FOR MUSICIANS
Trotters Wake Looking for Musicians
Prior to losing our electric bass player, we had a repertoire that consisted of about two thirds acoustic Irish songs and one third cover tunes from the 60's to present. We are looking for musicians who love Irish and other Celtic music but also enjoy a bit of variety. We currently have only two members - a female vocalist/keyboard player & a male vocalist/acoustic guitar/bodhran/keyboard player - and a nice sound system. Our rehearsal room is located near 35th Ave and Northern, just south of O'Brien's Pub.
We are keeping an open mind about how to reform, so if you are at all interested, please contact us, even if you are not certain how you might fit in.
