1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- FESTIVAL PICTURES ARE
UP
I have uploaded photos from the Arizona Irish Festival on Oct 4. The only comments I had was that it did not appear there were many people there. This is due to taking the pictures of the vendors before the gates open. I got shots of all the bands but probably missed one of the dance schools.
On subject of photos, I have a new section in the photos directory of past Colleen Pageants going back to 2003. http://www.azirishmusic.com/photo_list.htm.
--- ACOUSTIC SHOWCASE CONTINUES ON SAT WITH IAIN WALINCK

3. TOM TEVEN PLAYS IRISH CULTURAL CENTER ON SUN EVENING
Sun, Oct 19th, 2008 - 7:00 PM
On Sunday, October 19, 2008, The Irish Cultural Center located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004 will be presenting Singing Phenomenon, Tom Teven
Following an extended tour of the Northwest, Thomas B. Teven of Celtic Pride is returning to Arizona
Currently, Tom is touring the Northwest promoting his newest recording, comprised of classic country and rock. The new CD is a solo endeavor, and has been very well received by audiences.
Tom performed for many years at the original Dubliner Pub in North Phoenix, still located at 40 th Street and Thunderbird. The club was packed on most nights, and many of the original crowd of regulars still remain friends today. It was, in short, an amazing era.
Ready to enjoy a warm Southwestern winter, Tom says he is looking forward to returning and to seeing old friends ... and to meeting new ones. "I have a special bond with that area. It will be great to be back," he said.
The concert starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $10.00
4. KEN O'MALLEY PLAYS IRISH CULTURAL CENTER SUN OCT 26
"Brilliant, passionate vocalist... "
Dara Records, New York City, October 2002.
"...a perfect 10..." The Irish Herald, November 2004
The Irish Cultural Centerwelcomes the great Irish folk-singer Ken O' Malley. Born and raised in Dublin City, Ken O' Malley is regarded as one of the leading Irish folk singer/songwriters in the United States today. By the time he was 14 he was playing in coffeehouses in Dublin's vibrant traditional music scene and at 15 he opened for legendary balladeer Paddy Reilly at the equally legendary Old Sheiling.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ACCLAIMED IRISH BALLADEER COMES TO PHOENIX
Dublin born singer-songwriter Ken O’Malley will be the featured performer on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix, In this captivating solo show, O’Malley will transport his audience to his beloved Ireland with his rich, resonant voice and engaging stage presence accompanied by his remarkable talent on guitar and mandolin. The University of St. Thomas at Houston pronounces that Ken O'Malley is "widely regarded as the finest Irish folk singer/songwriter in the United States today" and the Irish News calls this consummate entertainer "without question, . . .the single most enduring, influential and proficient of all Irish musicians in Southern California . . ."
----------------------------------------------------------------
The event promises to be a magical evening of music with songs in both English and Irish Gaelic, suitable for all ages. Not just a singer, about whom Dave Soyars of the Irish Herald writes "his powerful and emotive voice shines through on everything he does", O’Malley is also a cultural ambassador and educator who infuses every performance with a genuine passion and love for his native land and its people. As longtime fan Mark Dresser says "the songs Ken sings touch all of us, Irish or not, to the very core of the human heart".
Admission to the event is $10. Showtime is 7:00 PM on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix, AZ. For more information, contact the Center at 602-258-0109 or online at www.azirish.org
He has performed with The Chieftains, Paul Brady, The Wolf Tones, Lunasa, Solas, Mary Black and Gaelic Storm to name a few, and has led his well-known band The Twilight Lords in two recordings, The White Seahorse and Women of Ireland. He was commissioned by Turner Pictures to compose an original song, “The Roses and the Rye for the CD accompanying the movie Gods and Generals, the sequel to Gettysburg. Ken is the narrator for FritzFilms' Joyce to the World, a one-hour long documentary on Ulysses and its author James Joyce, featuring Brian Dennehy, Finoula Flanagan, Frank McCourt and Malachy McCourt. He sang in the Paramount Pictures movie Patriot Games, coached Irish actor Pierce Brosnan for his singing debut in the movie Evelyn and, most recently, recorded the 17th century Irish ballad “Eamon an Chnoic” (Ned of the Hill) for National Geographic's CD recording Romance Around the World, a collection of twelve international love songs. In August '04 Ken performed at the John Anson Ford Theatre in Los Angeles with Solas and again at the Ford in September '05 with Gaelic Storm. He most recently starred in Kerry Records production of A Grand Irish Variety Concert at The Shiley Theater, San Diego, The United Irish Cultural Center, San Francisco, and Marsee Auditorium, El Camino College, Torrance California.
Do not miss this journey to Ireland, and to Skibbereen and Raglan Road and to that place where words and music meet. A great night of storytelling and song. Not to be missed!

6. CHERISH THE LADIES AT SCOTTSDALE CENTER THUR, OCT 30
Oct 30th - Thur evening at
7:300 P.M. $38
Scottsdale Center for the Arts
Theater 4301, Galleria Corporate Centre, Scottsdale
(480) 994-ARTS (2787)
www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org
Named after a traditional Irish jig, Cherish the Ladies initially won recognition as the first and only all-women, Irish-American traditional Celtic band. In a relatively short time, the group's members soon established themselves as musicians and performers without peer. With their unique blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture and puts them forth in an immensely humorous and entertaining package. Cherish the Ladies has been chosen "Best Musical Group of the Year" by the BBC and has recorded a dozen highly acclaimed albums, including the Grammy-nominated Celtic Album, a collaboration with the Boston Pops Symphony.
---------------------------------------------------------
When describing Cherish the Ladies – the critics say it best…
“It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do”, the Boston Globe,
“An astonishing array of virtuosity”, the Washington Post, “Expands the annals of Irish music in America…the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious”, The New York Times - and for over two decades, Cherish the Ladies have proven themselves worthy to live up to these accolades and in doing so have become one of the most engaging ensembles in the history of Irish music.
They have grown from a one-time concert concept to an Irish traditional music sensation, literally the most successful and sought-after Irish-American group in Celtic music. Organized by folklorist/musician Mick Moloney and sponsored by the Ethnic Folk Arts Center and the National Endowment for the Arts, they began as a concert series featuring the brightest lights in Irish traditional music.
7. CONTRA DANCE AT THE CENTER
Each fourth Wednesday, Contra Dance comes to the Irish Cultural Center. This month it falls on October 22. The dancing begins at 7:30 PM and were almost ready to hang up the shoes by 10 PM. Cost is only $7. Snacks provided by dancers. Watch your kids around dancers and bring your soft soled non scuffing dance shoes! Contra Dancing is a form of American folk dance in which the dancers form a set of two parallel lines that run the length of the hall. Each dance consists of a sequence of moves that ends with couples having progressed one position up or down the set. As the sequence is repeated, a couple will eventually dance with every other couple in the set. Is Contra Dancing Similar To Square Dancing? Many of the basic moves in Contra Dancing are similar to those in square dancing (swings, promenades, dos-ŕ-dos, allemandes). A square dance set comprises only four couples whereas only the length of the hall limits the number of couples in a Contra Dance set. To join the set, all you need is a partner. If you have danced squares, you will enjoy Contras immediately.
8. LITTLE MISS SHAMROCK CONTEST NOV 9 AT ICC
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire Committee announces the 2nd Annual Little Miss Shamrock selection for ages 6-12 on Sunday, November 9 at the Irish Cultural Center at 2 pm. The program is designed to introduce girls of Irish descent and their families to the Arizona Colleen and Rose of Tralee Programs, which are celebrating their 26th and 50th anniversaries, respectively. Two young ladies will be chosen to ride in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Phoenix and participate in a variety of Irish events throughout their reign. A prize package will be awarded each girl. Judging is based on her ability to introduce herself on stage and meet new people; to share about her family and being at least a wee bit Irish; her overall well-roundedness in life: school, family, and extracurricular; and poise and manners.
The girls will demonstrate a talent with a one to two-minute performance. Applications are due by November 1 and are available at www.azcolleen.org or contact Heather at 602-568-0842. The competition is not a beauty pageant, but rather a selection process to recognize great up-and-coming communicators in the Arizona Irish Community.
Participating builds self-confidence and encourages young people to learn about their Irish origins early in life. The event is open to the public; tickets are $2 each. The next Arizona Colleen will be selected among women ages 18-27 of Irish descent. She will serve as a spokesperson in area events and is awarded a free trip to Ireland and $1,000 in scholarships. Contestants are judged on poise, communication skills, and talent. As the Arizona Rose, she competes in Ireland for a world tour (www.roseoftralee.ie).
