2. KEN O'MALLEY PLAYS IRISH CULTURAL CENTER SUN OCT 26
"Brilliant, passionate vocalist... " Dara Records, New York City, October 2002.
"...a perfect 10..." The Irish Herald, November 2004
The Irish Cultural Centerwelcomes the great Irish folk-singer Ken O' Malley. Born and raised in Dublin City, Ken O' Malley is regarded as one of the leading Irish folk singer/songwriters in the United States today. By the time he was 14 he was playing in coffeehouses in Dublin's vibrant traditional music scene and at 15 he opened for legendary balladeer Paddy Reilly at the equally legendary Old Sheiling.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The event promises to be a magical evening of music with songs in both English and Irish Gaelic, suitable for all ages. Not just a singer, about whom Dave Soyars of the Irish Herald writes "his powerful and emotive voice shines through on everything he does", O’Malley is also a cultural ambassador and educator who infuses every performance with a genuine passion and love for his native land and its people. As longtime fan Mark Dresser says "the songs Ken sings touch all of us, Irish or not, to the very core of the human heart".
Admission to the event is $10. Showtime is 7:00 PM on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix, AZ. For more information, contact the Center at 602-258-0109 or online at www.azirish.org
He has performed with The Chieftains, Paul Brady, The Wolf Tones, Lunasa, Solas, Mary Black and Gaelic Storm to name a few, and has led his well-known band The Twilight Lords in two recordings, The White Seahorse and Women of Ireland. He was commissioned by Turner Pictures to compose an original song, “The Roses and the Rye for the CD accompanying the movie Gods and Generals, the sequel to Gettysburg. Ken is the narrator for FritzFilms' Joyce to the World, a one-hour long documentary on Ulysses and its author James Joyce, featuring Brian Dennehy, Finoula Flanagan, Frank McCourt and Malachy McCourt. He sang in the Paramount Pictures movie Patriot Games, coached Irish actor Pierce Brosnan for his singing debut in the movie Evelyn and, most recently, recorded the 17th century Irish ballad “Eamon an Chnoic” (Ned of the Hill) for National Geographic's CD recording Romance Around the World, a collection of twelve international love songs. In August '04 Ken performed at the John Anson Ford Theatre in Los Angeles with Solas and again at the Ford in September '05 with Gaelic Storm. He most recently starred in Kerry Records production of A Grand Irish Variety Concert at The Shiley Theater, San Diego, The United Irish Cultural Center, San Francisco, and Marsee Auditorium, El Camino College, Torrance California.
Do not miss this journey to Ireland, and to Skibbereen and Raglan Road and to that place where words and music meet. A great night of storytelling and song. Not to be missed!

7:300 P.M. $38
Scottsdale Center for the Arts
Theater 4301, Galleria Corporate Centre, Scottsdale
(480) 994-ARTS (2787)

Named after a traditional Irish jig, Cherish the Ladies initially won recognition as the first and only all-women, Irish-American traditional Celtic band. In a relatively short time, the group's members soon established themselves as musicians and performers without peer. With their unique blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture and puts them forth in an immensely humorous and entertaining package. Cherish the Ladies has been chosen "Best Musical Group of the Year" by the BBC and has recorded a dozen highly acclaimed albums, including the Grammy-nominated Celtic Album, a collaboration with the Boston Pops Symphony.
---------------------------------------------------------
When describing Cherish the Ladies – the critics say it best…
“It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do”, the Boston Globe,
“An astonishing array of virtuosity”, the Washington Post, “Expands the annals of Irish music in America…the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious”, The New York Times - and for over two decades, Cherish the Ladies have proven themselves worthy to live up to these accolades and in doing so have become one of the most engaging ensembles in the history of Irish music.
They have grown from a one-time concert concept to an Irish traditional music sensation, literally the most successful and sought-after Irish-American group in Celtic music. Organized by folklorist/musician Mick Moloney and sponsored by the Ethnic Folk Arts Center and the National Endowment for the Arts, they began as a concert series featuring the brightest lights in Irish traditional music.
5. WILLSON AND MCKEE (ROCKY MOUNTAIN CELTIC) IN PHOENIX THIS WEEK
Oct (21) Phoenix AZ Fiddlers Dream Showase FARWest
Oct (22) Phoenix AZ, Beaded Lizard Gathering 2802 E Devonshire, Phoenix
Oct (24-26) Phoenix AZ FARWest Folk Alliance Conference
KIM MCKEE
A Colorado native, Kim McKee began performing at age five! Her great grandmother was a piano and organ teacher so the family made sure that Kim began her musical education early. Classical training was her foundation, but traditional folk music became her passion. Attending Celtic festivals while gathering instruments and information along the way, she was obsessed with the music of her ancestors. Kim has won numerous awards including the National Mountain Dulcimer Championship in 2002, and four time award winner at theMilwaukee Irish Festival songwriting contest.
KEN WILLSON
Ken Willson grew up in rural Minnesota and North Dakota. The early musical memories for him were cherished local events like variety shows, church music, family-made music and other grassroots experiences. Self-taught and determined, he passed through several musical lives, performing with many rock, country, bluegrass and other types of bands. Winning performance awards in such far away places as Australia, Ken has honed his skills on stage through decades of performance and dedication to his "roots" of acoustic folk music.
THE MUSIC
We call our music "Rocky Mountain Celtic" We are a unique mix of the Celtic traditions combined with an original American sound.
We are not Americans pretending to be Irish or Scottish but rather Americans doing what we do best – interpreting our roots music in fresh and original ways!!
The combination of our Celtic heritage plus our Montana and Colorado roots gives us a uniquely original sound, unlike anything on the current soundscape.
Original, original, original...yes that's it!!
We do original songs that have an ancient sound and then we take a traditional song and
rewrite it as our own by adding our distinctive Rocky Mountain style to it.
Rocky Mountain Celtic – Unique by Design!!

6. THE MUSES RETURN TO THE CENTER NOV 8
On Saturday, November 8, 2008, The Center will be presenting The Muses. If you don't know what is worn under a Scotsman's kilt, or what it feels like to have your imagination filled with Irish mist covering green fields... or especially if you do, you'll want to catch The Muses live! Tanya Brody plays the harp, hammered dulcimer, penny whistle, and many more instruments, but it is her angelic voice that will captivate your heart. Matthew Gurnsey plays the concertina, bodhran, bowed psaltery, mandolin and many others while singing along with a contagious sparkle in his eye that is sure to make you smile. Together and along with friends they bring in for certain shows, they are an inspiring trip to the Celtic Isles saving you the price of airfare! Touring across the United States and Canada, The Muses will be performing locally! The Muses have shared the stage with The Glen Garry Bhoys, Alex Beaton, Rathkiltar, Michi Regier, and others. They play Scottish/Irish festivals and games from coast to coast (including some islands) and never miss an opportunity to entertain at an Irish pub when they have a moment to spare. With beautiful voices creating bewitching vocal harmony, The Muses are a Celtic experience you'll not want to miss. For this performance local fiddler Erin Lewis will also be performing. Performance starts at 8:00 pm and admission is $10.00.
7. CONTRA DANCE AT THE CENTER ON WED
Each fourth Wednesday, Contra Dance comes to the Irish Cultural Center. This month it falls on October 22. The dancing begins at 7:30 PM and were almost ready to hang up the shoes by 10 PM. Cost is only $7. Snacks provided by dancers. Watch your kids around dancers and bring your soft soled non scuffing dance shoes! Contra Dancing is a form of American folk dance in which the dancers form a set of two parallel lines that run the length of the hall. Each dance consists of a sequence of moves that ends with couples having progressed one position up or down the set. As the sequence is repeated, a couple will eventually dance with every other couple in the set. Is Contra Dancing Similar To Square Dancing? Many of the basic moves in Contra Dancing are similar to those in square dancing (swings, promenades, dos-ŕ-dos, allemandes). A square dance set comprises only four couples whereas only the length of the hall limits the number of couples in a Contra Dance set. To join the set, all you need is a partner. If you have danced squares, you will enjoy Contras immediately

ABOUT FOUR SHILLINGS SHORT
The Celtic, Folk and World music duo Four Shillings Short are touring the US this year playing concerts from Florida to Maine to California. The international duo "is nothing short of musical excellence encompassing an eclectic array of world music. They have carved out a musical identity all their own." (River Stages, Dubuque IA)
With a decade of touring in the US and Ireland under their belts the husband and wife duo of Aodh Og O'Tuama from Cork, Ireland and Californian Christy Martin live as full time minstrels in their trusty Dodge Caravan loaded with an ever increasing array of musical instruments including hammered dulcimer, mandolins, Renaissance woodwinds, North Indian Sitar, recorders, tinwhistles, banjo, guitar, percussion and even a bowed psaltry.
In a single night, Four Shillings Short perform Traditional Irish and Scottish songs, tunes and airs, Indian Ragas, Folk Ballads, Old-Time songs, Medieval and Renaissance instrumentals and a cappella numbers as well as contemporary folk and original compositions. Their sound has been described as "wondrously diverse", "truly refreshing" and "alternative neo-Celtic folk of the first order".
REVIEWS
"Like a medieval fair in New Delhi, the music of Four Shillings Short is intriguing and worth investigating. Their music is a global potpourri….(New Times, Miami FL)
"They are not the Clancy Brothers or Jean Richie or Ravi Shankar but a combination of all three, laced with Irish humor. Their collection of instruments is museum-like and I've never seen the place so packed before." (San Gregorio General Store, CA)
"Four Shillings Short bring a fascinating mix of material, spirit and wit to the stage."
(Two Way Street Coffee House, Downers Grove, IL)
