1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- NIALL BERGIN TO TALK ABOUT KILMAINHAN GAOL AT FESTIVAL
2:00 PM at Irish Cultural Center on Sat. Oct 27
With so much going on at the Arizona Irish Festival, people might miss making a point of seeing Niall Bergin. Niall is the Supervisor, Acting Archivist and Curator of Kilmainham Gaol Museum in Dublin and is visiting Arizona as part of a national tour sponsored by the Irish American Cultural Institute.
Niall Bergin is employed by the Heritage Service in the Office of Public Works, which is the Irish office responsible for protecting and maintaining Ireland’s heritage. His work in Kilmainham Gaol ranges considerably from guided tours of the Gaol to its many thousands of visitors, coordinating research, recruiting new staff and liaising with TV/Film groups and artists, all of which would like to use Kilmainham Gaol as a venue. He has worked with the museum since 1999.
Kilmainham Gaol (jail) in Dublin served as a political seismograph, recording many different political upheavals in Ireland, including the imprisonment and execution of many of those involved in the 1916 Easter Rising for Ireland’s independence from Britain. Bergin will look at the Gaol from its opening in 1796 to its closing in 1924. He will explore the often overlooked story of the fate of the common man, woman and child held in the Gaol and the impact of the Great Famine and Convict Transportation on the Gaol. www.iaci-usa.org/perceptionsfall2007.html
2. ARIZONA IRISH FESTIVAL THIS SAT
Who: The Irish Cultural & Learning Foundation
What: The Arizona Irish Festival ~ Where everyone is a wee bit Irish!
When: Saturday, October 27, 2007 from 10am~5pm

Phoenix, AZ ~ The Seventh Annual Arizona Irish Festival is coming to the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix on Saturday, October 27, 2007. The event takes place at Hance Park where visitors can enjoy a celebration of Irish culture through music, dance, food & live entertainment!
Shoppers will enjoy an array of Irish gifts, souvenirs and merchandise! Do you love meat pies, corned beef & cabbage and fish & chips? Visit the food court for a selection of fine Irish grub that’s sure to please any palate.
A silent auction will offer unique prizes to the bold bidder with good timing, and the winner of the raffle at the end of the day will find tickets to Ireland in his or her hand. Children (of all ages!) are welcome to wear Halloween costumes in honor of the October 31 holiday that once marked the end of summer for the ancient Celts.
There are plenty of pubs, vendors and rich cultural presentations and displays. Trace your Celtic roots and come back to the bogs ~ follow the story of the Irish in Arizona!
Special entertainment is scheduled as follows:
CELTIC SPRING ~ AMERICA’S GOT TALENT STARS ~ Celtic Spring RETURNS! ~ Back by popular demand, returned from Ireland where they shot the cover art for their new CD, “Cornerstone,” available soon on their web site. www.celticspringband.com.
OCEANS APART ~ John and Steve met on a recording session several years ago and since then, have delighted audiences of every imaginable kind with their songs and instrumentals drawn from the inexhaustible wellsprings of Ireland, Wales, Scotland and North America. The music is infectious, ranging from the breathless jigs and hornpipes, through the more relaxed popular songs, all the way along to the ballads and airs. They have performed on network television and have been favorably received by the local and regional press.
THE MCMORROWS, Irish music at it’s best from one of Arizona’s most beloved groups! themcmorrows.com.
THE BRAZEN HEADS ~ This high energy Celtic band is known for their bawdy show and eclectic taste in material. themcmorrows.com

BRID DOWER BAND ~ Brid Dower hails from Waterford, Ireland. Bríd left Waterford in 1992 for Phoenix, Arizona, initially for a short trip, but ended up settling there, where she was able to broaden her musical horizons even further. There she met with local fiddle master Sheila Maguire, and over the course of several permutations, the Celtic rock band Ashling was born. Ashling dominated the local Irish music scene for many years, and with the release of their debut album 'Every Waking Hour', firmly established Bríd as the premiere Irish singer in the Phoenix Valley. www.briddower.com

THE PHOENIX SCOTTISH PIPE BAND ~ Count backward to 1958. How many early Valley landmarks still hold their identity today after all that time? One of those landmarks is the Phoenix Scottish Pipe Band. The wardrobe of the red MacGregor kilt has clothed “hundreds” of pipers and drummers through the years. The Phoenix Pipe Band is “the Dean of pipe bands,” the common point from which band members went on to the Argyll Pipe Band, Shrine, Phoenix Police, Mesa Caledonian, Spirit of Scotland, Seven Pipers Society, and other bands in Arizona and elsewhere. The Band is expanding its repertoir of Irish music and embracing a more inclusive approach to Celtic music in general. They have also moved away from a military uniform—spats and khaki shirts—to a friendlier look that complements steadily improving musicianship.
The Arizona Irish Festival is directed by members of E.R.I.N. (Executive Resources for Irish Networking) in association with the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation. The Irish Cultural Center, The Heart of the Celtic Community, is a division of The Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation, a 501 c (3) Not For Profit Corporation, and is owned and maintained by the City Of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. All proceeds of the Festival will benefit the Irish Cultural Center and its ongoing activities.
The Irish Cultural Center is also the year-round home for Celtic music, language, and dancing classes; Irish literature and film; touring musicians and actors; and First Friday art exhibits. For more information about the Seventh Annual Arizona Irish Festival, please contact Jacqueline Carro, 480.495.8924.

Founding members Steve Twigger, Patrick Murphy and Steve Wehmeyer officially formed Gaelic Storm in 1996 on St. Patrick’s Day, appropriately enough. They became a celebrated act in their adopted hometown of Santa Monica, Calif., where they packed O’Brien’s Irish Pub every Sunday night with their traditional, urban Celtic sound. Then came 1997, and a little film called “Titanic” and their appearance as the “steerage band”. Ten years, five albums and two national tours later, Gaelic Storm continues to routinely sell out venues worldwide.
Featured in the film, “Titanic”, Gaelic Storm tours aggressively and plays over 125 dates a year. Gaelic Storm routinely breaks attendance and merchandise sales records, pushing their popularity beyond the World music genre and into the mainstream music consciousness.
Gaelic Storm released their fifth album “How Are We Getting Home?” in August 2004 which debuted at #3 on the Billboard World Music Charts and #10 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and re-entered the September 2005 World Albums Chart at #3. Their previous four albums have all charted high on the Billboard World Music Chart, including reaching the #2 position on three different occasions. Since their self-titled first album and their appearance in the film Titanic, Gaelic Storm continues to thunder onto stages around the world attracting larger and larger crowds.

6. JIM MALCOM IN ARIZONA IN NOVEMBER 8 TO 12
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
--- THUR NOV 8 - FLAGSTAFF AZ
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Living Traditions Presentations is proud to announce its upcoming concert, featuring singer-songwriter Jim Malcolm. Jim will be performing Thursday, November 8, 2007 at 8:00pm in the Zane Grey Ballroom at the Hotel Weatherford.
Jim is probably best-known as the lead singer of the popular Scottish band, the Old Blind Dogs. He was their singer for seven years, retiring in August 2006. He is equally known in Scotland as a singer-songwriter and guitar/harmonica player. In 2004 , Jim won the Songwriter of the Year award at the Scots Traditional Music Awards. He has been dubbed "the new male voice of Scotland," being on of the leading songwriters in the traditional idiom. He is also a leading exponent of simultaneous guitar and harmonica, "displaying more talent than many who have made their living from harmonica alone." If you see Jim Malcolm perform, you can expect to hear traditional songs and ballads, his own compositions, and compelling stories, told both through singing and on their own. He is also a fine interpreter of material by Robert Burns, able to sing comfortably in Scots vernacular. "Given the right song, Jim Malcolm will just melt you in your seat." - The Scotsman.
The concert is taking place in a intimate venue, so tickets are limited. Tickets are only available through Kari Barton, president of Living Traditions Presentations. For tickets, please email Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com or call 928-600-1365.
Tickets are
$22 with a $2 discount to members of NACHS and FFOTM. Students and Children are $12. You can find out more information on upcoming shows at www.livingtraditionspresentations.blogspot.com.

8. MEMO FROM RICK CYGE OF MEADOWLARK
Hi folks!
I'm excited to announce that due to the wonderful reception I got on my return to this venue, Todd Newman at the Cave Creek Coffee Company has asked me to perform every Friday night from 7-10pm!
I'd like to invite you to join me in their Wine Bar this and/or every Friday for a night of great food, great wine, and, of course, pretty decent music!
Here's the lowdown on this place:
CCCC has earned a reputation as the "Austin City Limits" of Arizona by hosting top notch national and regional acts in concert over the past several years. Meadowlark was one of their first concerts. They hold the concerts outdoors behind the venue.
The wine bar is a more intimate setting where the music of local musicians can be enjoyed in a more ambient setting where folks chat and enjoy wine and eats. They describe their food as "eclectic bistro cuisine". Their menu includes scrumptious bruschettas, salmon & cheese platters, incredible salads, & their famous sandwiches. There is no cover.
I'll be performing my usual mix of "Baby Boomer Classics" and folk and acoustic instrumental favorites on steel string and nylon string guitars.
The CCCC is located at 6033 E. Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek, AZ. For more information about the venue, call them at 480-488-0603. You can visit their site at: www.cavecreekcoffee.com. For info about my performance, call me at 480-481-9647.
Hope to see you there! Please come up & say hi....
Warm Regards,
Rick Cyge
