Oct. 21, 2006
PHOENIX - Come acquire a taste of Ireland at the sixth-annual Arizona Irish Festival next weekend at the Irish Cultural Center and Margaret T. Hance Park.
Hance Park will be decorated as an Irish field on Oct. 28 and there will be lots of booths with traditional foods. Irish musicians and dancers will perform on two stages. Headliners include Celtic Spring, a family fiddle and dance band featured on the NBC show America's Got Talent, and a bagpipe artist.
"Some of the ways we celebrate Irish culture is through music and dance," said Jackie Carro, public relations coordinator for the festival. advertisement
A variety of brews and traditional Irish grub including shepherd's pie will be available. There will be presentations on Irish literature and history and state historian Marshall Trimble will talk about the Irish community within Arizona.
Those seeking information about their Irish roots can speak to the center's genealogist, Sean Prior.
The festival has also asked members of the DeLorean motorcar club to discuss the history of the car company, which originated in Ireland, Carro said. A DeLorean was featured in the Back to the Future movies. Carro said there will be candy on hand for children who want to celebrate Halloween a little early.
"We encourage the kids to come in costume," she said. "It's a nice alternative for the kids to do for Halloween."

--- THUR. DEC 21 - WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION
Once again preparations are underway at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, for the annual celebration of the mid-winter Solstice Thursday, December 21. The occasion now as in ancient times marks the longest night of the year. For people living in Ireland, this could mean having darkness for as many as seventeen hours. So it is understandable why the first farmers who arrived Ireland over 5,000 years ago, so eagerly awaited evidence from within the passage tomb called Newgrange, in county Meath, for signs that the sun had started to return from it's annual southern migration. The penetration of light from the rising sun into the central chamber at Newgrange on December 21 had great ceremonial significance for the Irish and others in pre-historic times, in addition to serving as a precise celestial clock for those early farmers.
Songs and poetry illuminate the longest night of the year. The vigil fire illuminates the monument, An Gorta Mor. We proceed to the Ribbon Trees and honor those no longer here to enjoy the fruits of life. By placing ribbons on the branches of this special tree(s), those dearest to us, but who are no longer here, can rest in knowing that their passing and suffering will long be remembered by those of us who care. Afterwards, the firelight guides us to the Great Hall where we feast and enjoy the music of our heritage.
To help raise funds and food for the needy, we will be placing ribbons on the "Ribbon Tree" being introduced for the first time this year. Also, those wishing to drop off non-perishable food items at the Irish Cultural Center may do so between now and the Solstice event on the evening of December 21 st .
This year, the Irish Cultural Center welcomes Grove of the Rising Phoenix, a Ár nDraíocht Féin (ADF) affiliate located in Arizona. They will present a Winter Solstice ceremony celebrating the return of the light.
The event begins at 6:00 PM. Dinner will be served at 7:00 PM. Admission is $5 per person, $10 per person with dinner. Ribbon donation is $1. Due to the popularity of this event, seating is limited, RSVPs before December 17 are necessary. Unfortunately, walk-ins for dinner cannot be accepted.

8. MEMO FROM HUGH LEHANE OF IRELAND
New Irish music in Arizona!
Born in Limerick and raised in Dublin, Ireland. Singer, performer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Hugh Lehane recently relocated to California. Over the past 3 years Hugh has performed literally hundreds of shows all over California and Nevada. Now he has just recently started performing shows in Arizona, at the new Auld Dubliner pub in Tucson and at Fibber Magee's in Chandler.
Hugh's independently released cd, 'Never been before' has received multiple award nominations, including Toronto Independent music awards. He recently appeared at the 2006 Great American Irish fair in California on the same bill as Gaelic Storm.
The Irish News in Los Angeles describes Hugh's eclectic mix of Irish, cover and original songs as an "innovative, solo show, you must see to appreciate".
For more info on Hugh and to check out his latest Arizona show dates please visit: www.myspace.com/irishhugh or www.hughmusic.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This weekend on Sat 28th Oct I am playing at the Halloween costume party at Fibber Magee's in Chandler. It will be my 4th show at Fibber's in the past 2 months.
The following weekend I return to Fibber's on Thursday 2nd Nov.
and then I play the Auld Dubliner in Tucson (also my 4th visit there in the past 2 mths) on FRI 3rd and SAT 4th Nov.
Having spoken to a lot of the Irish bar owners/music bookers in Arizona there seems to be a demand for new Irish bands/musicians and as a result I will be playing regularly in Arizona in the future. I would really appreciate any support, advice etc you could give to help introduce me to the Irish Arizona music scene.
Thank you
Hugh Lehane

11. CELTIC GUITARIST CHRISTOPHER DEAN RETURS TO ARIZONA
Enjoy an evening of Celtic and American folk music performed on fingerstyle and flatpick guitar by internationally recognized Celtic guitarist Christopher Dean.
Chris is not just a gifted exponent of Celtic music. He tells engaging and humorous stories, and weaves Celtic lore and history with his music - the familiar trinity of jigs and reels - haunting airs that take you far away to a land of the imagination - and laments that evoke past glory.
Starting a professional career in music in 1966, Chris has performed at concert venues with "The Rolling Stones", "The Rascals", "The Doors", and more recently with Alasdair Fraser, Men of Worth, The Wicked Tinkers, Brian Baynes, and Skyedance, to name a few.
Chris' third album, Celtic Journey, was released in January '06 to rave reviews. All three of his albums have been sold world wide, receiving radio play in Canada, U.S., Europe, and Australia. His tunes have also been released on three compilation albums in Italy, five in Japan, and one here in the U.S.
For sound clips and more, visit: www.cairneyhill.com.
"...many guitarists seem to concentrate on playing the instrument rather than the music. The music of Dean is exactly the opposite of this position. Very rarely have we heard a more sensitive and expressive guitarist who communicates through his Taylor guitar."
Alfredo De Pietra, Keltika Magazine, Milan, Italy
"If there's any truth to the old saying, "You can tell a lot about a man by the work he does," then Christopher Dean is a well-rounded, confident-but-not-flashy man of substance."
"Listening to his third solo album, Celtic Journey, is the equivalent of lying in the soft green grass on one of Scotland's rolling hills. The music commands control of all your senses, easing your mind back into a calmer place."
"Complicated, intricate chord patterns push along every track, and there's not a minute left unmastered. Dean takes the time to let his nimble fingers execute each measure delicately. As a result, he installs meaning, clout, and pride into each song."
"Even though this is an album backed by impressive credentials, with expert production from an artist who obviously did his homework, what makes it enjoyable to listen to is the beauty of music. None of the qualifications matter, just the work. Celtic Journey is all substance."
