2. CHERISH THE LADIES AT SCOTTSDALE CENTER THUR, OCT 30
Oct 30th - Thur evening at
7:300 P.M. $38
Named after a traditional Irish jig, Cherish the Ladies initially won recognition as the first and only all-women, Irish-American traditional Celtic band. In a relatively short time, the group's members soon established themselves as musicians and performers without peer. With their unique blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture and puts them forth in an immensely humorous and entertaining package. Cherish the Ladies has been chosen "Best Musical Group of the Year" by the BBC and has recorded a dozen highly acclaimed albums, including the Grammy-nominated Celtic Album, a collaboration with the Boston Pops Symphony.
When describing Cherish the Ladies – the critics say it best…
“It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do”, the Boston Globe,
“An astonishing array of virtuosity”, the Washington Post, “Expands the annals of Irish music in America…the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious”, The New York Times - and for over two decades, Cherish the Ladies have proven themselves worthy to live up to these accolades and in doing so have become one of the most engaging ensembles in the history of Irish music.
They have grown from a one-time concert concept to an Irish traditional music sensation, literally the most successful and sought-after Irish-American group in Celtic music. Organized by folklorist/musician Mick Moloney and sponsored by the Ethnic Folk Arts Center and the National Endowment for the Arts, they began as a concert series featuring the brightest lights in Irish traditional music.
3. FOUR SHILLINGS SHORT AT ICC ON SUN EVENING
On Sunday, November 2, 2008 The Irish Cultural Center located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004 will be presenting FOUR SHILLINGS SHORT
on a return engagement at the Center to celebrate the Celtic holiday of Samhain. The ancient Celts saw Samhain as the beginning of the year, or just one turning point among others in the cycle of the seasons, Samhain is still largely regarded as the Celtic New Year in the living Celtic cultures. The concert will start at 6 pm Admission is $10..00
The Celtic, Folk and World music duo Four Shillings Short are just what California and Ireland sound like when they're married together with the influences of India and the Renaissance. Living as modern day gypsies on a perpetual tour since 1997, the duo of Aodh Og O'Tuama from Cork in Ireland and Californian Christy Martin.
With a wide array of instruments including hammered dulcimer, tinwhistle, mandolins, North Indian Sitar, Renaissance woodwinds, percussion and vocals, Four Shillings Short "bring a fascinating mix of material, spirit and wit to the stage." (Dave Humphreys/Two Way Street Coffee House, Downers Grove, IL).
“A California duo you must see to believe. The arrangements of this husband-wife team are utterly delightful, filled with traditional instruments of both Celtic and Eastern Indian cultures and the familiar sound of American folk. Four Shillings Short is a band riddled with child’s play, yet rich in the wisdom of old-timers who know better than to take themselves too seriously. Their musical virtuosity makes old songs sound new and new songs sound like time-worn Celtic spells.” (City Pages, Wausau WI)
They "stretch the boundaries of folk music. Their music is a delight, performance style unexpected and their instrumentation is a kick." (Phil Shapiro/Bound for Glory/Ithaca, NY)

5. JIM MALCOLM IN IN ARIZONA THIS WEEK
------------------------------------------------------
Once again, Jim Malcolm will delight a special Flagstaff audience with his great musicality. Many of you have probably seen Jim perform many times as the lead vocalist of the Old Blind Dogs, before he left the band a couple years ago. Some more of you may have been able to see Jim on one of two solo tours in recent years. Now you have that chance again. For those of you that aren't familiar with Jim, he is a singer-songwriter who hails from Perthshire, Scotland, performing original as well as traditional songs with his amazing voice, great guitar work and astounding harmonica playing. He has been named the "new male voice of Scotland" and was Songwriter of the Year in 2004 at the Scots Trad Music Awards. Last year, the nearly full house enjoyed every moment of Jim's performance, especially the special treat near the end! If you would like to hear this concert and be a part of the special audience that gets to enjoy Jim Malcolm's talent, you can purchase tickets at Cedar Music or email or call me to purchase tickets. 8. EXPLORING THE EARLY IRISH POETS/ALPHABET - SAT NOV 15
On Saturday, November 15, 2008, The Irish Cultural Center located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004 will be presenting:
ERYNN ROWAN LAURIE
Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Erynn Rowan Laurie of Everett, WA has been a student of Irish and other Celtic cultures and mythologies for over twenty years. She has been a member of Seattle's Scottish Gaelic choir, " Seirm ", where she sang both alto and soprano, and has also studied Old and Modern Irish so that she could read myths and poetry in the original languages.
Erynn has a deep interest in the poetic traditions of Ireland in both their historical and mythic resonances. She has written numerous articles on aspects of early Irish mythology and spirituality. She is the author of "Ogam: Weaving Word Wisdom" and "A Circle of Stones: Journeys and Meditations for Modern Celts"
Erynn will present two lectures:
"Ogam: Past and Present " -- The history and development of the Irish ogam alphabet, the earliest form of written Irish. Covers theories of origin, linguistic roots of the letter names, common misconceptions about the character and uses of the ogam alphabet and modern developments in the use of ogam in different forms of Celtic spirituality.
" Poetry and Satire in Irish Culture " -- The poet has been one of the most respected - and feared - figures in Irish folk culture. Descendants of the druids, it was said that poets had the power to curse or to bless, to ruin or to raise a name to immortality. Praise and satire were among their functions and in this talk we'll examine some of the ways that poetry and satire were used by different kinds of poets in early Irish culture.
Donations are gratefully accepted for this event.
A limited number of " Ogam: Weaving Word Wisdom " books will be for sale.

A Celtic New Year Celebration
KILDARES
Their traditional songs and dance tunes (jigs and reels, hornpipes, etc) flow from driving to tender and back again. Fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bouzouki and bodhran lift the tunes, and surround and support the clean and lively vocals. Known for creating great rapport with audiences, they have a enthusiastic following that is growing every year. Follow ‘Round the House at www.roundthehouse.com
Seeking the return of traditional Celtic folk songs (and a stage overflowing with instruments & vibrance), The Muses breathe new life into a music that will never die. "Through our music you can feel the green shamrocks underfoot, catch the aroma of a distant salt sea, and taste the highland rain upon your lips." www.themusesmusic.com/
The music is infectious, ranging from the breathless jigs, reels and hornpipes, through the more relaxed popular songs, all the way along to the ballads and airs. They have performed on network television and have been favorably received locally and nationally by the media.

14. WINTER SOLSTICE PARTY ON DEC 21
On Sunday, December 21, 2008 The Irish Cultural Center located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004 will be presenting
THE WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATIONS
This year’s Solstice celebrations at the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix are anticipated to draw a larger attendance than past years, particularly since celebration of the occasion falls on the evening of Sunday December 21st, and those attending won’t have to deal with normal rush hour traffic.
Solstice, now as in ancient times, marks the longest night of the year, whereby the Sun is at its lowest elevation in the sky. The return of the Sun from its most southern position on the horizon has always been of great ceremonial significance, in addition to serving as a celestial clock. In Phoenix the occasion is marked by music and poetry. Ribbons are placed on the branches of the special Ribbon Tree, to spiritually unite us with those no longer here. A parade from the hunger memorial on site takes us to the bonfire where the Grove of the Rising Phoenix shares their ritual traditions.
This year, the customary special Irish dinner, prepared by Chef Frank will be served starting at 4:00 p.m. Note, that reservations for the food are required, call 480-242-3500. Outside ceremonies start at sunset (5:25 p.m.) Inside the Great Hall there will be traditional Irish Muisc following.
