--- FRI. NOV 9 - THE MUSES - CELTIC MUSIC WITH ZING!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Friday, November 9 the Center located at will be celebrating the return of The Muses. Admission is $5.00 and the show starts at 7:30 pm. If you don't know what is worn under a Scotsman's kilt, or what it feels like to have your imagination filled with Irish mist covering green fields... or especially if you do, you'll want to catch The Muses live! Tanya Brody plays the harp, hammered dulcimer, penny whistle, and many more instruments, but it is her angelic voice that will captivate your heart. Matthew Gurnsey plays the concertina, bodhran, bowed psaltery, mandolin and many others while singing along with a contagious sparkle in his eye that is sure to make you smile. Recently joined is Annie Mariner who's voice, recorder and bass add beauty and fullness to the over all sound. The three of them together are an inspiring trip to the Celtic Isles saving you the price of airfare!

Touring across the United States and Canada, The Muses will be performing locally! The Muses have shared the stage with The Glen Garry Bhoys, Alex Beaton, Rathkiltar, Michi Regier, and others. They play Scottish/Irish festivals and games from coast to coast (including some islands) and never miss an opportunity to entertain at an Irish pub when they have a moment to spare. With beautiful voices creating bewitching vocal harmony The Muses are a Celtic experience you'll not want to miss.

3. MEMO FROM OCEANS APART

November 2007
I think it got a little cooler, but a white Christmas is still looking unlikely! but we've started to play outside events, and that's always a bonus.

For those of you interested in poetry, we have just completed our first spoken word album (The First 1500 Years of Welsh Poetry), which was recorded live at the Malad Welsh Festival this year. It consists of readings and a talk on Welsh verse from about 600 to 2000 with a tribute (sung and spoken) to Dylan Thomas. There's also a companion text at: http://www.oceansapartmusic.com/first1500.htm It's probably not for everyone, but with our 5th musical album (Tethered to the Foam) on the shelves, hopefully we can keep you all happy! And talking of happiness.....

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.

5. NEW IRISH AMERICAN CONTESTS FOR GIRLS 6-17 YEARS OLD

INTRODUCING LITTLE MISS SHAMROCK AND ARIZONA OUTSTANDING IRISH TEEN

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire Committee announces two new events with Little Miss Shamrock for ages 6-12, and Arizona Outstanding Irish Teen for females, ages 13-17. These programs are designed to introduce Irish American girls and their families to the Arizona Colleen Pageant Program, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2008. Two titleholders in each category, for a total of four young ladies, will play a very important role on stage during the selection night for the Arizona Colleen. A prize package will be awarded each girl.

Judging is based on her ability to introduce herself on stage and meet new people; to share about her family and being at least a wee bit Irish; her overall well-roundedness in life – school, family, and extracurricular; and poise and manners. The youngest girls will demonstrate a talent with a one to two-minute performance, while Teens will submit a short essay with finalists reading it on stage.

Both competitions are not pageants, but rather a selection process to recognize great up-and-coming communicators in the Arizona Irish Community. Participating builds self-confidence and encourages young people to learn about their Irish origins early in life. See details at www.azcolleen.org or contact info@azcolleen.org.

The upcoming 25th annual pageant will crown the next Arizona Colleen to serve as a spokesperson for the Irish Community in area events and to ride in the Phoenix St. Patrick’s Day Parade. She is awarded a free trip to Ireland and $1,000 in scholarships. Contestants are judged on poise, communication skills, and talent. ###

7. COMING EVENTS

By George O’Brien

------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- NOV 2 TO 4 - Tucson Celtic Festival
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our Tucson Celtic Festival is growing! The Festival is held on the first weekend of November every year. 2007 is our 21st year and we are excited to take our Festival to the next level.

Join us on Friday evening for a lovely dinner on the field at the Festival site, our signature Torchlight Ceremony for the welcoming of the Clans and Celtic Societies followed by a Ceilidh with great music and entertainment. Our Friday evening kick-off to the Festival Weekend is the Best!

Friday Evening, Nov. 2, 6:30pm-10:00pm.
Saturday, Nov. 3, 9:00am-5:00pm.
Sunday, Nov. 4, 9:00am-5:00pm.

KILLDARES: Originally formed in 1996, The Killdares have come to be known as one of the hottest, cutting edge bands in music today - Celtic or otherwise. The Killdares have created a fresh new sound that's blended with enough commercial edge to be instantly recognizable, always engaging, and appealing to fans of all ages. Their live shows are filled with an infectious energy so powerful that it has been known to move people to tears. Expanding the definition of "Celtic", the band uses the unconventional pairing of screaming, fire-driven fiddle and bagpipes with the wail of electric guitar, bass and drums to create brilliant arrangements of traditional tunes and original compositions. This distinctive sound combined with the band's incredible stage presence is nothing short of awesome.

MUSES: The Muses add new life to old songs as well as adding original material to the Celtic repertoire. Tanya Brody, Matthew Gurnsey and new band member Annie Mariner each play a plethora of exotic instruments ranging from bohdran & concertina to harp & hammered dulcimer; psaltery, pennywhistles, flute and zils to name just a few.Since the moment they chose to blend their voices in song they began captivating the hearts of every audience from Hawaii to Maine, Vancouver to Florida, weddings and pubs to concerts and main-stages at Scottish Games and Celtic Festivals. The Muses perform with a ferocity and a strength of heart that embodies the music they all love so dearly.

Seeking the return of traditional Celtic folk songs (and a stage overflowing with instruments & vibrance), The Muses breathe new life into a music that will never die. "Through our music you can feel the green shamrocks underfoot, catch the aroma of a distant salt sea, and taste the highland rain upon your lips."

OCEANS APART: The international duo, Oceans Apart has been delighting audiences with their unique blend of music from the British Isles and North America. John Good, a Welshman, draws upon the strong musical background of his homeland and neighboring countries, while Steve Colby, originally from Ohio, brings American and Canadian music of the 50’s and 60’s to the table. Both are gifted multi instrumentalists and superb vocalists who sing from the heart. Oceans Apart’s carefully crafted arrangements breathe new life into old and new perennials, using anything from a banjo to a bagpipe, mandolin and harmonica, and who wouldn’t like to know what a Scotsman wears beneath his kilt? Whether singing along, clapping hands, or sitting back to enjoy a ballad, in the end the room will be brought to its feet by this duo’s ability to combine the familiar with the unexpected.

ROUND THE HOUSE, a dynamic band with great musicianship and energy brings authentic Irish music, with a twist of Tucson, to concert, contradance, and festival stages. Their traditional songs and dance tunes (jigs and reels, hornpipes, etc) flow from driving to tender and back again. Fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bouzouki and bodhran lift the tunes, and surround and support the clean and lively vocals. Known for creating great rapport with audiences, Round the House has a enthusiastic following that is growing every year.

Founding members Steve Twigger, Patrick Murphy and Steve Wehmeyer officially formed Gaelic Storm in 1996 on St. Patrick’s Day, appropriately enough. They became a celebrated act in their adopted hometown of Santa Monica, Calif., where they packed O’Brien’s Irish Pub every Sunday night with their traditional, urban Celtic sound. Then came 1997, and a little film called “Titanic” and their appearance as the “steerage band”. Ten years, five albums and two national tours later, Gaelic Storm continues to routinely sell out venues worldwide.

Featured in the film, “Titanic”, Gaelic Storm tours aggressively and plays over 125 dates a year. Gaelic Storm routinely breaks attendance and merchandise sales records, pushing their popularity beyond the World music genre and into the mainstream music consciousness.

Gaelic Storm released their fifth album “How Are We Getting Home?” in August 2004 which debuted at #3 on the Billboard World Music Charts and #10 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and re-entered the September 2005 World Albums Chart at #3. Their previous four albums have all charted high on the Billboard World Music Chart, including reaching the #2 position on three different occasions. Since their self-titled first album and their appearance in the film Titanic, Gaelic Storm continues to thunder onto stages around the world attracting larger and larger crowds.

In January 1999 Jim joined one of Scotland's most popular international folk acts, the Old Blind Dogs from north east Scotland, and has since worked with them all over the UK, in France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany, USA, Canada and Bulgaria. His song Battle of Waterloo was recorded on their sixth album, The World's Room. In 2000 Jim released his third solo CD, Resonance, on Beltane Records. It features a collection of his favourite traditional songs alongside four of his own new compositions and some contemporary classics. Lochanside, his composition written to the popular pipe tune, is already being picked up by other professional acts.

To date career highlights also include solo tours in USA, Germany, Canada, Denmark, Ireland and England, solo studio spots on Travelling Folk, an appearance on STV's Hogmanay show and a tour in Uganda. His song Neptune featured on an award-winning documentary about a North Sea oil spill.

He was one of twelve leading Scottish singers who performed Andy Thorburn's epic work Tuath gu Deas, and has featured on volumes four, five and six of Linn Records Complete Songs of Robert Burns, produced by Dr Fred Freeman.

In December 2002 Jim released his fourth solo CD, Home, again on Beltane Records, and at time of writing we wait to hear what the critics think. See the reviews page to find out!

Spring 2003 is the release date for the Old Blind Dogs' third CD with Jim as lead singer. It's going to be good!

Jim now spends his time touring solo and with Old Blind Dogs, and 2003 will be an exceptionally busy year. When he's not on the road he likes to relax by the riverbank, trying, but rarely succeeding, to catch a trout. He likes to read Private Eye, revel in the woes of the Conservative Party, and drink far too much coffee. Print This Page

If you attended the Irish Christmas in America show in 2005, you received a special treat. You heard great traditional Irish music by the group Teada and special guests Tommy Martin (uilleann pipes), Grainne Hambly (harp), Cathie Ryan (vocals), and local Irish dancers Kari Barton and Kristen Donnelly. Now you have an opportunity to see the show again, but now the show is better than ever! Teada will still be performing with Tommy and Grainne. On vocals will be Danu’s Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, one of Ireland’s leading female vocalists. Dancing this year will be Abbey Magill and Sienna Hickey, championship level Irish dancers. You really do not want to miss this great opportunity to experience ancient Irish traditions with the contemporary artistry of some of Ireland’s finest performers. This show will bring the spirit of Christmas on a distinctively Irish journey. The show last year was performed in front of numerous sold-out audiences on the East coast.

Irish Christmas in America is presented by Living Traditions Presentations and will take place on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at 8:00pm at The Orpheum Theater in downtown Flagstaff. Tickets are $25 general admission. There is a $2 discount to members of NACHS, FFOTM, NAU/CCC Faculty and Staff, and Seniors. Discounted tickets are ONLY available at Cedar Music and Jitters Coffee. Student and Child tickets are $15. Tickets are also available at Animas Trading, Rainbow’s End, The Orpheum Box Office and www.orpheumpresents.com. This event is great for the whole family to attend as a special Christmas outing. For more information, email Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com or call 928-600-1365.
