--- ART, FOOD AND MUSIC AT FIRST FRIDAY NOV 6
Come join the Irish Community Friday, November 6 with a cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs, brats and more.
Our featured artist for November is Beverly Fizzel. Beverly is a fabric artist who also worked in oil, acrylics, watercolor, pastels, charcoal and ink. It takes her about six months to complete a fabric piece entirely by hand. Her ideas come from her life’s experiences, including music, performing arts and her imagination. Her work is not for sale, but she plans to sell limited edition prints of her work. She retired in 2004 from a career in printing and graphic design, which included owning two printshops. She first entered her artwork in scholastic art competitions in high school. In 1963 she earned both Best of Show and First Place awards with her first oil painting in a show in Scottsdale. Her work is in private homes throughout the United States and Canada.
There will be an Irish seisiun with players from all over the valley.

3. ACCLAIMED IRISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC BAND BUILLE .AT ICC ON THUR NOV 12
Date: Thursday, November 12, 2009
Time: 7:30 PM
Where: The Irish Cultural Center (ICC)
Tickets: $15 to the public, $12.50 for FPIA members and ICLF Academy students
Buille are
Niall Vallely, Paul Meehan and Caoimhín Vallely. They have joined forces
to create one of the most potent new sounds to emerge from Ireland in many years.
Concertina virtuoso Niall Vallely enlists his brother Caoimhín on piano (yet another creative member of the legendary clan, so prominent in the Irish arts scene) and guitar powerhouse Paul Meehan to forge a new sound and to take Irish music onward to new frontiers.
Niall Vallely : Acclaimed throughout the world as one of Ireland's greatest concertina players, Niall Vallely began learning the instrument at the age of seven, taught by his parents Brian and Eithne Vallely, founders of the Armagh Pipers' Club. A founding member of Nomos , he has in recent years performed both in a solo capacity and with musicians such as Karan Casey, Tim O’Brien, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, and Paddy Keenan. In 1999 he released his debut solo album Beyond Words , and in 2003 released Callan Bridge , a collaboration with his brother Cillian (of Lúnasa) on pipes.
Paul Meehan : A product of thriving Irish music scenes in Manchester, County Armagh, and Cork, Paul recorded three albums with the highly acclaimed North Cregg. He has also spent a number of years touring and recording with Dorsa, the Karan Casey Band, and Lúnasa. In recent years Paul has appeared on stage with the likes of Altan, At the Racket, Paddy Keenan, Tommy Peoples and Liz Carroll.
Caoimhín Vallely : Like his older brother Niall, pianist Caoimhín grew up in Armagh and began tin whistle lessons at the Armagh Pipers Club before moving to the fiddle. While still only seventeen, he joined the band Upstairs in a Tent, where he played alongside Brian Finnegan (formerly of the band Flook) and Kathryn Tickell. In Cork he co-founded North Cregg. Theater credits include a stint as musical director with the Belfast-based Dubblejoint and playing with Alan Kelly’s dance show “Celtic Legends.” His debut solo piano album Strayaway will be released shortly.
Together Buílle are, in the words of The Irish Times , “As fresh a breath that’s blown through traditional and roots circles in a long, long time.”

Jimmy Crowley & Máirtín de Cógáin
Two generations of Cork balladeers
Corkmen Máirtín de Cógáin and Jimmy Crowley have
given their whole lives to the promulgation and nurture of the ballad. Both
men hail from the rebel county of Cork and now reside in America. Máirtín
and Jimmy proudly speak the Irish language and have won degrees in the subject
from the University of Ireland.
Máirtín is a founding member of The Fuchsia Band who have taken many a festival by storm in America. A consummate story-teller, actor, singer and musician, he can be seen and heard in the hit movie, The Wind that Shakes the Barley about the Irish War of Independence and subsequent Civil War.
Jimmy Crowley is reckoned to be something of a legend in Irish music from his earlier work with Stokers Lodge, described by Micheál Ó Súilleabháin as "an icon in Irish music". He has recorded ten albums of music, is a committed songwriter and a song collector; and has found in Máirtín an able partner and counterfoil for the respect and commitment they both have for all branches of the song tradition from the bardic, Gaelic songs to the present day revival.
Captain Mackey's Goatskin and Stringband takes its name from a legendary Irish-American Fenian and a legendary Cork folk band from the sixties, Paddy's Goatskin and Stringband, which had a seminal effect on Jimmy's musical life. The Stringband's membership is fleshed out by the addition of Irish fiddler Valerie Plested and guitarist Don Penzien for a mighty sound, indeed!

6. WINTER SOLSTICE INFORMATION RELEASED
On Monday, December 21, 2009, The center, will be presenting our 10th annual
Winter Solstice. Outside celebrations marking the longest night of the year
start as the sun goes down, so dress to keep warm.
Solstice, now as in ancient times, marks the longest night of the year whereby the Sun is at its lowest elevation in the sky. The return of the Sun from its most southern position on the horizon has always been of great ceremonial significance, in addition to serving as a celestial clock.
Through the magic of Irish mythology, special visitors from afar will be here on December 21st to help us celebrate Solstice, which is considered the oldest celebrated festival in the world. Our special visitors are known as the ‘Swans from Pleiades’.
The customary Irish dinner will be served starting at 4:00 p.m. Reservations for food would be appreciated by December 19th. Please call 480-242-3500 or 602-258-0109.
