The revised format of the Start Page has been getting good reactions. There is a list of special events announcements shown just below the Table of Contents. Other announcements are directly available through a link that has a rainbow and pot of gold piece of art.
On the links directory, the links for American Irish state and local organizations
at www.azirishmusic.com/links_G.htm#D_G_IRISHLOCAL
are now sorted by state (except for Arizona and festivals that are listed separately).
They give an idea about what groups in other parts of the US are doing.

7. BAYS AND LANDES CONCERTS: TUCSON, PHOENIX, & FLAGSTAFF
Bays, described by Fiddler Magazine as "One of the best fiddlers working in the Irish tradition in America" and Landes, founder of the annual Zoukfest festival and a major creative force pioneering the use of the Bouzouki in Celtic music, will delight their Flagstaff audience in the intimate confines of the historic Carriage Hall. For a few hours that Sunday evening, the six acre wooded enclave next to N.A.U. will again be filled with music from the homeland of Timothy and Michael Riordan, brothers who built the 1904 mansion and brought gracious living in a small, territorial logging town.
The music will be rich, accessible, enchanting, driving, tender, and sinuously delivered as only a masterful Irish fiddler like Randal Bays can. The rhythmic melodies of Roger Landes' bouzouki will leave you awash in memories of its exotic yet familiar sound. The tunes will reach out and touch all the traditions they have inspired since leaving the shores of Ireland. Randal and Roger bring the music alive and remind us it is still living and growing as close as the country western and pop music that surrounds our young people.
TUCSON - FRIDAY NOV 14TH Fri. Nov. 14, 2003 8:00 pm Tickets $15, on sale azfiddle@mindspring.com Sat. Nov. 15, 2003 7:00 pm Sun. Nov. 16, 2003 7:00 pm Tickets $10, on sale at Join us for this unique opportunity to savor music in
the shadow of an Arizona treasure - a remarkable of Arts and Crafts mansion
with it log-slab siding, volcanic stone arches, and hand-split wooden shingles.
The Riordan Mansion is located next to NAU in Flagstaff on 409 Riordan Road.
Tickets cost $10 in advance at Aradia Bookstore or call Deb at 928-774-5936;
$12 at the door.
Randal and Roger will also be giving Irish music workshops
on Sunday afternoon at a private home, and programs for school aged children
on Monday November 17 at the Coconino Center for the Arts. Pre-registration
is required for both events: contact 774-5936 or debmike@infomagic.net
8. BAYS AND LANDES WORKSHOPS IN FLAGSTAFF NOV 16TH
Register in advance for November 16th Master Workshops with Randal Bays and Roger Landes
Here's an opportunity to sit and learn from master musicians and teachers. Intimate "house workshops" let you choose between Randal Bays sharing his Irish fiddle style and heritage and Roger Landes teaching his masterful Irish accompaniment and ornamentation techniques the afternoon of Sunday November 16 from 1:00 to 4:00.
The Cork Examiner, Ireland's second largest newspaper called Randal Bays a "rare beast, a master of both the fiddle and the guitar" and Fiddler Magazine said he is "among the best Irish style fiddlers of his generation." That's high praise for this self-taught American whose recordings and concerts have earned him recognition on both sides of the Atlantic as an instrumentalist of uncommon talent. The great Irish fiddler James Kelly has called Randal Bays "A musician's musician." Randal describes his workshops this way-- "My three hour workshops are all about sharing the technique and the understanding of Irish music. The material will be intermediate / advanced but beginners are welcome to attend and will probably find it valuable. I teach 2 or more Irish tunes, repeating the phrases before I hand out the written music so we can use the same version of a tune. Then I focus on ornamentation, bowing, rhythm, and style. I use a lot of examples and handouts. I've found it's a helpful to get down to details."
Roger Landes is one of the premier bouzouki players in the United States, and a major creative force in pioneering its use in Celtic music. For the past two decades, Roger has helped introduce American audiences to the intricacies of Irish dance tunes and accompaniments played on this ancient instrument. In Landes' skillful hands the bouzouki sings as a lead or provides a hearty backbone when supporting others. His workshop is open to anyone who is interested in Irish music for bouzouki, guitar, mandolin, and/or tenor banjo. Musicians who'd like to experience his demonstrations and examples of rhythmic accompaniment, double melodies, harmonies, and ornamentation will be delighted with this workshop.
The cost for an afternoon with one of these talented musicians is $35 in advance or $40 at the door if space is available. The workshops will be held from 1:00 to 4:00, Sunday November 16 at the home of Mike Reddig and Deb Comly, 1457 W. Meade Lane. A few partial scholarships are available for deserving (preferably younger) musicians. Other performances include a concert Sunday evening and school group concerts on Monday. Please all 774-5936 for further information about any of these events.

10. NEWS FROM FLAGSTAFF
ROBIN LAING did a great "make up" concert at Charly's on Sunday afternoon.
The good news--for concert attendees--is that it was free! Over 60 people
enjoyed Robin's smooth mellow voice and hauntingly beautiful lyrics.
Thanks also to the Flagstaff musicians who performed at the ceilidh when
Robyn needed a break. This has not been the best ever tour for Robin--last
night he was scheduled to perform--where else but in San Diego, California.
That concert was canceled too because of the fires. Maybe he'll write a
song about this American tour!
FEEDBACK WANTED: Bic Waterman, roving reporter for the Tri-Celtic News,
has asked for detailed feedback on his monthly column. See Page 12 of the
current (November) issue for the specific details he is looking for. If
you have any comments for him, please send it to piobair@infomagic.net as
soon as possible (before he writes next month's column), and we will
forward it to him. Thank you!
DIANA'S BOOK IS OUT! Diana Gabaldon's first Lord John Grey novel--LORD
JOHN AND THE PRIVATE MATTER is now out! It's available at Aradia Bookstore
for $23.95 (and don't forget the member discount!).A great way to while
away the time while we're waiting for the next Jamie and Clair opus.

11. LETTER FROM A NEW PLAYER
Greetings to My Irish Sisters &Brothers,
My Name is Tom Grills, I have been a professional musician as a guitarist for over 25yrs,my roots are in the blues, I have won the AZ State competition 2 yrs in a row back in the ninties and playedand recorded with many famous Blues Singers and players (Big Pete Pearson, Nappy Brown, James Cotton) to name a few. I have recently rediscovered my Irish roots (ty blackwood!) and have developed a strong interest in Irish Tradition and Celtic music. I am seeking other musicians to jam with: the goal being putting together a group. I am in the beginning stages of learning this music but the roots have been there all along from my pastand I am highly regarded by my peers for my skills. Again I play guitar and live in the PHx/Tempe area.
And yes the name ain't Irish but I am from the east coast where there was a lot of Irish/Scillian marriages...need I say more......got a lot of fire :)
contact me at Bluzman77@netzero.net
Peace to all and keep the Flame burning
Tommy Grills.

13. RISSA MILLER PASSES AWAY
[EDITOR'S NOTE: Rissa Miller was the editor of Contradance News and one of the main organizers of the Sharlot Hall Folk Festival. She will be greatly missed.]
Dear friends--
The outpouring of love and caring at this unhappy time has been incredible, and we thank you.
I am including below the obituary which will appear in the Prescott Courier next Sunday. The boys and I have been strengthened and encouraged by all of your concern and help and expressions of love for Rissa. I look forward to seeing you soon.
With love,
Warren Miller
Rissa Miller died October 25 after a two-year struggle with ovarian cancer. Rissa was born Morissa Joele White on April 3rd, 1947, to Zelia (Strauss) White and Sanford Ben White in Tucson Arizona. She received from her mother, Zee, a diminutive and very British war bride, a fierce egalitarianism and intolerance for abuse of the English language. From her father, Ben, she received an ability to act directly and the confidence to expect results.
Rissa graduated Valedictorian from Catalina High School in Tucson, and enrolled at Stanford with help from her uncle Bill who had made trench coats for English soldiers during WWII. Graduated from Stanford in 1969, she decided on nutrition as a career field and enrolled in the School of Public Health at Berkeley, receiving an MS degree in 1973. She was in Berkeley during the heady days of the Vietnam War protests and was present to put flowers on National Guardsmen's bayonettes during the People's Park actions.
Rissa returned to Arizona in 1973 where she completed a nutrition internship at the Arizona Department of Health under Anita Yanochik (Owen) who became a lifelong mentor and friend. She was hired as the first director of the new WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program, and later served as director of the Nutrition Services Division of AHS.
She married Warren Miller in 1979 and the two quit their jobs and traveled around the world by bicycle and jet plane, returning to Arizona in 1981. They relocated to Prescott and the mountains, where Rissa became the Director of Nutrition for Yavapai County Health Department, retiring 20 years later. In Prescott Rissa discovered contra dancing and became an avid dancer, a founder of the Folk Happens! organization, and a contra dance caller.
Rissa is survived by husband, Warren, and two sons, Keegan and Blake, of Prescott. She is also survived by a sister, Fern Davye, of Morristown, New Jersey, and a brother, Bram White, of Westlake Village, California, his wife, Barbara, and two daughters, Jenna and Lissa; by mother- and father-in-law Bill and Marge Miller, Bowie MD and a passel of Miller kin; and by numerous friends and extended family members, including Tom d'Aquanni, Morristown NJ, Billie Brown, Florence AZ; Francie Marks, Grants Pass OR; Jean McPhee, San Diego CA; Barbara Levin, Madisonville TN; Karen Webb Cullen, Sydney, Australia; Rene Girard, Jan Alexander, Mike Wurtz, Bill Halterman, Judy and Don Sultrop, Judy Russell, Nina Perlmutter, Richard and Sean Bailey, Bruce Hardwick, Steve and Noel Elliott, B.J. Allgood and Steve Apell, Prescott AZ; Jenny and Stan Young, Dewey AZ; Tani Martinat and Greg Lynch, Berkeley CA; Anita and George Owen, Scottsdale AZ; and many other friends from contra dance, public health, and B'rith Shalom Congregation communities. In lieu of flowers, Rissa has requested that donations be made to the Association of Arizona Food Banks, 800-445-1914 or www.azfoodbanks.org.
A Celebration of Life event will take place at 1:00 p.m. November 30 at the Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Church, 882 Sunset Ave, Prescott.
