--- RIVERDANCE STILL A BIG DEAL
I know it's hard to believe, but last weekend was the first time I had the pleasure of seeing Riverdance live. Obviously I've seen Riverdance on video, but there is nothing quite like seeing the show live. It really is an incredible show.
It is my understanding that Michael Patrick Galligher (McElligot-Galligher School) performed on Sunday.

--- SUN. NOV 12 - SPECIAL BILL CRAIG CONCERT
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bill Craig roves into the Center on November 12 at 6 PM. Tickets for this unique concert experience are only $10.
Bill is an Irish entertainer based in Toronto, Canada. Bill has been performing for over 30 years and is an accomplished guitarist and vocalist, performing all over the world. Bill has resumed his solo career after a brief spell as a member of the Irish Rovers and delights audiences with his lively performances. He continues to release collections of songs that capture the spirit of the music and the heart of the listener.
Biography from www.billcraig.com
Bill was born and raised in Ireland, and lived in London in 1973. He moved to Toronto, Canada in 1974. He first performed as vocalist for various Rock 'n Roll bands in Ireland in 1967.
Bill has performed acoustic traditional and contemporary music now since 1977. It was in 1977 he formed Foggy Duo with Canadian multi-instrumentalist, Don Garbutt. They brought their musical energy to some very old material, giving it a much needed lift. This successful partnership lasted through four years and three albums - including Ship in Distress - as the renamed Skyboat. Don Garbutt also worked on Bill's first solo album, On The Left. This album was recorded in Canada and released on the Dutch Pan label in Europe. His next recording, on which he played all instruments, is titled Late Nights.
Bill Craig's performance is relaxed eclectic, thought provoking, goofy and entertaining. His casual attitude is designed to include, not exclude his audience, be it eight or eight hundred people. Bill puts all his energy into his songs and makes a point of having a good time on stage. This usually translates to his audience having a similar experience.

3. DERVISH IN FLAGSTAFF ON THUR
Irish supergroup Dervish is coming to make their Flagstaff premier.
Don't be fooled by this...Dervish is a band with that has long stood at the forefront of traditional Irish groups. From high energy tunes played with intuitive fluidity to beautifully measured songs, from charming lyrics of life and love to inspiring melodies htat lift audiences from their seats, all the elements are drawn together by vocalist Cathy jordan's masterful stage presence. Her stories to the songs and the interaction with the audience draw people into the music in a way few performers can achieve. Having seen Dervish several times, I must say that they are one of my favorite bands; it was difficult not to jump up on every tune and dance. The songs with the power and emotion of Cathy Jordan's voice are just astounding. The Irish Times wrote this about Dervish: "The musical integrity makes the group a formidable heir to the throne abandoned by The Bothy Band, if not a serious contender for The Chieftain's international space...Simply a brilliant and uncluttered testimonial to music imagination and talent."
Dervish will be performing Thursday, November 9, 2006 at 8:00pm at the Cline Library Auditorium. Doors will open at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 with a $2 discount to members of NAIF, NACHS, FFOTM, seniors, and NAU Faculty & Staff. Child and student tickets are only $10! Tickets are available at NAU Central Ticketing 928-523-5661, Cedar Music 928-779-0799, Jitters Coffee 928-526-6964, and www.ticketmaster.com.

6. MEMO FROM THE KNOCKABOUTS
Hey George,
Every year Flagstaff has a "best of" competition and we think it is time for an Irish band to be "best local band" so we need some help from our friends out there. If anyone feels like taking the time to vote us in, that would be great! It requires a little time to register but its not painfull. It would be great to have an Irish band win this contest for once so help us out. To vote , go to http://www.azdailysun.com/bestof and vote for the Knockabouts as best local band.
Thanks,
John McGregor

The Celtic, Folk and World music duo Four Shillings Short live as modern day gypsies touring since they met 11 years ago. They bring together musical influences from Ireland and Scotland, Renaissance Europe, and India on an ever increasing array of instruments including hammered dulcimer, North Indian Sitar, Medieval and Renaissance woodwinds, mandolins, tinwhistles and recorders, banjo and percussion. The husband and wife duo of Aodh Og O'Tuama from Cork in Ireland and Californian Christy Martin perform all over the US and Ireland. Their 2006 - 2007 tour will include concerts from California to Maine and everything in-between.
AN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY ROAD SHOW....the music of Four Shillings Short
Traveling musicians with a carload of instruments is nothing new in the world of folk music, but what if one of those instruments is a Sitar from India or a Renaissance Crumhorn? With an ever-increasing array of instruments (over 20 at last count), including hammered dulcimer, mandola, mandolin and bouzouki, tinwhistles and recorders, Medieval and Renaissance woodwinds, North Indian Sitar, banjo, guitar, percussion and songs old and new the music of Four Shilling Short is always lively and captivating.
In a single night, Four Shillings Short perform Traditional Irish and Scottish songs, tunes and airs, Indian Ragas, Folk Ballads, Old-Time songs, Medieval and Renaissance instrumentals and a cappella numbers as well as contemporary folk and original compositions. Their sound has been described as "wondrously diverse", "truly refreshing" and "alternative neo-Celtic folk of the first order".
A BRIEF HISTORY:
Since its inception in the San Francisco Bay Area, Four Shillings Short has always had an experimental streak. Formed in 1985 the band's roster has included many of Northern California's Irish, Folk, Jazz and Classical musicians. Since 1995, the current partnership of Aodh Og O'Tuama and Christy Martin have formed the core of Four Shillings Short.
Born in Cork, Ireland, Aodh Og O'Tuama comes from a family of poets, writers, musicians and teachers. He studied music at University College Cork in Ireland and Stanford University in California. Californian Christy Martin grew up in a family of musicians and dancers and began studying the Sitar at age 16 with a protégé of famed Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.
TOURING IN THE UNITED STATES AND IRELAND:
After 10 years of being an established folk band in the San Francisco Bay Area, the duo of Four Shillings Short set out on their first tour in 1997. Traveling in a converted mini-van packed with instruments, sound equipment, a camping stove and tent, they set out on a new tour every two years performing in 45 of the United States and in Ireland. In 2007 they will tour the entire US once again and then move base to Ireland and begin touring more extensively in Europe.

Under the banner "Forward with Scotland's Past," the Battlefield Band plays Scottish music with a rare passion and joy. Inspired by their rich Celtic musical heritage and fired by the strength of today's Scottish cultural scene, the four musicians of the group mix old songs with their new, self-penned material, performing them with a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments - bagpipe, fiddle, synthesizer, guitar, cittern, flute, bodhran and accordion. After 30 years, they still lead the way for Scottish music, being awarded the first Best Live Act by the first annual Scots Trad Music Awards in 2003.
Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength and vibrancy of today's Scottish cultural scene, which indeed they have done much to create and fuel, they have led, and been at the forefront, of a great revival in Scottish music. Refusing to be limited musically by suffocating antiquarianism, or the music business' fashions, they have mixed the old songs and music with a new self-penned repertoire, all played on a fusion of ancient and modern instruments - bagpipes, fiddle, synthesiser, guitar, flutes, bodhran and accordion
Named after the Glasgow suburb of Battlefield, where the group was formed by four student friends, Battlefield Band have been on the world''s roads for just on 30 years now, distilling their own unique form of the Scottish spirit and bottling it in concert and onto disc - Germany, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Syria, Jordan, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, U.S.A., Canada, Uzbekistan and the U.K. They have broken down barriers and pioneered many new directions which others have followed. Angry, joyful, raucous, contemplative, their music is most importantly - accessible to all.
During those years there have obviously been line-up changes and indeed the band are remarkable for the smooth and organic way in which these changes have taken place. Their continued creativity, freshness and enthusiasm is due to the positive way they have viewed, and used, these changes - and of course the new musicians themselves have been of prime importance. Musical evidence of these changes can be heard on their many albums made over the years.
