1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- IRISH ACOUSTIC SHOWCASE ON BREAK FOR TWO WEEKS
I’m bias, but I think the program has gone very well. We have had a great response from the audience, our guests, and our pick up band - the Lis Doon Varna Players. The point of program is to highlight Greg LaCosse, Iain Wallinck, Four Shillings Short (special guest), The Strand, and last Sat we featured Trotters Wake. On Dec 6 we will return with Malcolm Harris.
2. MEMO FROM THE KNOCKABOUTS
Hey George,
The Knockabouts will be at Charly's Pub this Saturday at 9PM. For those of you visiting Flagstaff, Charly's is in the Weatherford Hotel in downtown Flagstaff. It's always a great time at Charly's and we hope to see some of our "southern" friends there.
Slainte,
John

4. MEMO FROM GREG LA COSSE
Hi All,
I'll be playing Wednesday, November 19, at the Beaded Lizard Gathering (AKA Encanto Park coffeehouse) on Wednesday August 13 at the Devonshire Community Center (previously known as the Los Olivos Senior Center), 28th Street and Devonshire (1 block north of Indian School Road). Will be a fun evening as I will be performing with friends Malcolm Harris and Retro Folk.
The Beaded Lizard Gathering starts at 6 PM with jamming followed by the sets at 7 PM. If time permits there is an open stage after the sets. We must leave by 9 PM.
My friend Lou Ann Preston taped my performance at the Encanto Park Coffeehouse in June and put some of it on You-Tube. Here are the links to a couple of my favorites:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOZ7-fPaqu4&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAo0zFS1a-Y&feature=related
There is also a couple clips she did from the Glendale Library Coffeehouse that will hopefully be posted soon.
Future Performances:
Wednesday, January 21, 2009, Glendale Library, Glendale, AZ
Saturday and Sunday, March, 21 & 22, Glendale Folk and Heritage Festival,
Sahuaro Ranch Park, Glendale, AZ., Schedule TBD
Hope to see you there,
Greg LaCosse
5. MEMO FROM OCEANS APART
Americymru - An American Welsh Blog - features an interview of John Good in both Welsh and American.
americymru.blogspot.com l
Here is an exerpt:
“What are your major sources for traditional music? How important is traditional music in your repertoire? “
“Robin Huw Bowen, Huw “Bach” Roberts, Plethyn, mam a mamgu, collections of John Parry Ddall and others, old field recordings, Nansi Richards, Ceri Rhys Mathews, Stephen Rees, Sally Harper, Bangor University, Y We……Everyone who sings (plays)must begin by building on the past. The only thing is how far and in what direction you want to go from the source. I want to work carefully to respect the tradition without falling into the pitfall of too much repetition.”
When can we expect the next album from "Oceans Apart"?
“Well, we just released a Christmas album (The Carol Singing Sea [listen to the MP3’s below) and also at the same time a DVD called “Trans Celtic Gala” (see the three videos): A live show with a pipe band, step dancers and friends, both available at our web site.”

She began to play traditional Irish music on tin whistle at an early age, before turning to the concertina and later the harp.
Over the past few years, Gráinne has toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States. She is also a qualified teacher of traditional Irish music and is in great demand at summer schools and festivals both in Ireland and abroad.
Gráinne has been featured on a number of recordings and her first solo CD, Between the Showers, was released in 1999, followed by Golden Lights and Green Shadows in 2003 and The Thorn Tree in 2006.

From rousing ensemble numbers to solos showcasing each members’ vocal style and personality, Celtic Thunder performs powerful ballads, popular hits, and heartwarming songs of love and loss from across the Celtic music spectrum—Irish, Scottish, traditional and contemporary.
Celtic Thunder creator/producer Sharon Browne teamed up with legendary Irish composer Phil Coulter (Elvis Presley’s "My Boy," Sandie Shaw’s "Puppet on a String," the now-classic Irish ballad "The Town I Loved So Well"), to audition men all over Ireland and Scotland for the group, and craft a representative set list. The eclectic mix of music includes traditional songs ("Mountains of Mourne," "Come by the Hills," "Love Thee Dearest"), pop classics (Paul Anka’s "Puppy Love," the Eagles’ "Desperado," The Moody Blues’ "Nights in White Satin") and Coulter originals (Irish Rugby Football Union anthem "Ireland’s Call," "The Old Man," "Steal Away"), accompanied by The Celtic Concert Orchestra, a full band, bagpipes and monks. Choreography, dramatic lighting, visual effects, and a set resembling ancient stone steps and paths enhance the musical production.
