1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- LIS DOON VARNA ACOUSTIC NEWS
The Irish seisiun will be cancelled for this Wed only due to Thanksgiving.
The Showcase will be dark this Sat due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but will be back on Sat. Dec 6 with Malcolm Harris. Malcolm Harris is a well known singer who was born in England to a Scottish father and Irish mother.
On Sat. Dec 13 we have scheduled Wood, Wind and Wire. Wood, Wind, and Wire is a group that includes Mark Lanus (plays a number of instruments with the Brazen Heads), Erin Lanus (former two time runnerup in the Colleen Pageant and played fiddle for Gaelic Thunder), and Bill Lytle of Clusterfolk.
--- LYRICS PAGE UPDATED
One of my big projects over the last few weeks has been to update the Lyrics page. www.azirishmusic.com/Lyrics_List.htm. I’ve pulled out the lyrics without youtube clipss into a separate page. Of the remaining 288 or so songs that remaind, most have two clips associated with each song.
Not every clip is first rate, but most represent excellent representations featuring many of superstars of Irish music including Luke Kelly and the Dubliners, the Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem, Sinead O’Connor, Mary Black, Christy Moore, and many many more.
I put this together initially to encourage vocalists looking for additional material. Some clips don’t show much, but some clips of live performances are very interesting.

Celtic Dance Academy Presents: The Irish Nutcracker
A magician with secrets, an enchanted gift, a battle with the Mouse Queen, a magical adventure through the land of Tir Na Nog where fairies, flowers and gypsies dance to Irish tunes: it must be the Irish Nutcracker. Join Clare as she experiences the classic holiday Christmas story the Irish way.
The Irish Nutcracker returns to Phoenix in 2008 after two years of standing room only crowds. New features this year are LIVE music performed by local Irish band Blackwood and a new, larger venue to accommodate the high level of interest in this exciting holiday production.
The Irish dance drama is based on the classic ballet and holiday story. All of the performers are students of the Celtic Dance Academy. The show includes performers of all ages and abilities.
Come and start your holidays off on a festive Irish note by joining us for the Irish Nutcracker
[EDITOR’S NOTE - Every show involves new music and dance numbers. This year the show is being moved to the much larger Horizon High School auditorium. This show has become a season tradition.]
--- THANKGIVING NEWS
Thanksgiving is not usually a big day for Irish music, but there will be performances by Shay Veno at Tim Finnegan’s and Tom Teven at Seamus McCaffrey’s. Pubs that will be open but without a program include the Dubliner and O’Connor’s.
As a rule I don’t list “out of genre” bands, but for what it is worth the Thanksgiving programs at other bars include: Mark and Emmett at O’Donoghues, Johnson Twins at Rula Bula, and Kyle Phelan at Skeptical Chymist.
2. HARPIST GRAINNE HAMBLY IN CONCERT ON WED
Captivating traditional Irish harper, Gráinne Hambly will be performing here in the Greater Phoenix area on Wednesday, November 26, 2008. Four Peaks Irish Arts, Comhaltas is proud to sponsor the concert.
This will be a fantastic way to get you in the holiday spirit. The setting will be an intimate house concert in Chandler. The date is November 26, 2008 at 7:30 P.M. The voluntary suggested donation is $12.50 for non-members ad $10.00 for Comhaltas members. As space is limited, it is necessary to RSVP to Four Peaks Irish Arts to pre-book with the number of guests who will be attending in your party by either emailing cyndy@fourpeaksirisharts.org or calling 602.315.3065. Seating will be on a first come first served basis. Please bring a folding chair to ensure you have a seat. Those calling after capacity is reached will be placed on a waiting list and contacted in the case of any cancellations.
Ms. Hambly will also be presenting a workshop and teaching how to play Irish music. The date is Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The workshop will be at the Mesa Public Schools Performing and Creative Arts Center, 155 N. Center St., Mesa, AZ. Bring your own harp! The cost is $15.oo for students under 18 and $35.oo for adults. For more information, contact Adrienne at 480 443-1164.
Gráinne is herself, a member of Comhaltas through her home branch in Ireland. She comes from County Mayo in the west of Ireland, and is a music graduate of Queen's University Belfast. She began to play traditional Irish music on tin whistle at an early age, before turning to the concertina and later the harp.
Over the past few years, Gráinne has toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States. She is also a qualified teacher of traditional Irish music and is in great demand at summer schools and festivals both in Ireland and abroad.
Grainne has been featured on a number of recordings and her first solo CD, Between the Showers, was released in 1999, followed by Golden Lights and Green Shadows in 2003 and The Thorn Tree in 2006. --

From rousing ensemble numbers to solos showcasing each members’ vocal style and personality, Celtic Thunder performs powerful ballads, popular hits, and heartwarming songs of love and loss from across the Celtic music spectrum—Irish, Scottish, traditional and contemporary.
Celtic Thunder creator/producer Sharon Browne teamed up with legendary Irish composer Phil Coulter (Elvis Presley’s "My Boy," Sandie Shaw’s "Puppet on a String," the now-classic Irish ballad "The Town I Loved So Well"), to audition men all over Ireland and Scotland for the group, and craft a representative set list. The eclectic mix of music includes traditional songs ("Mountains of Mourne," "Come by the Hills," "Love Thee Dearest"), pop classics (Paul Anka’s "Puppy Love," the Eagles’ "Desperado," The Moody Blues’ "Nights in White Satin") and Coulter originals (Irish Rugby Football Union anthem "Ireland’s Call," "The Old Man," "Steal Away"), accompanied by The Celtic Concert Orchestra, a full band, bagpipes and monks. Choreography, dramatic lighting, visual effects, and a set resembling ancient stone steps and paths enhance the musical production.

TEADA CHRISTMAS SHOW

Tucson, AZ

520-547-3040
Now in its fourth year, Irish Christmas in America returns to the USA this holiday season with some of Ireland's top young traditional artists, in a spellbinding presentation of Irish cultural traditions. The performance makes its only Arizona performance on Saturday, November 29, 8:00pm at Tucson's Fox Theatre, located at 17 West Congress Street. Tickets and information are available online at www.foxtucsontheatre.org, or by phone at (520) 547-3040.
Called "captivating" by Irish Music Magazine and "a powerful evocation of the season" by Folk Wax, Irish Christmas in America is produced by Oisín Mac Diarmada of award-winning traditional Irish group Téada. Cara Dillon, one of Ireland's leading female vocalists, joins the show for the 2008 tour. The cast also includes Téada band members Damien Stenson on flute, Sean McElwain on guitar and Tristan Rosenstock on bodhrán (Irish drum) and narration. The magic of the Irish harp and pipes, from leading exponents Gráinne Hambly and Tommy Martin, augments the exciting Irish dancing of newcomer Brian Cunningham.
Irish Christmas in America takes the spirit of Christmas on a distinctively Irish journey. The celebrated family-friendly performance features Irish ballads and holiday carols, lively fiddle tunes and thrilling Irish dancing. The cast brings to life seasonal customs and stories both heartfelt and humorous, and a backdrop of evocative photographic images of Ireland gives a rich historical context.
"One of the most heartfelt themes of Irish Christmas is emigration," says Oisín Mac Diarmada (pronounced O-shin Mac Der-metta), an All-Ireland fiddle champion from County Sligo. "Music was a way that people stayed close to home."
Mac Diarmada and his band Téada (pronounced "tay-da," meaning "strings" in Irish) are one of Irish music's leading exponents, preserving the timeless energy of traditional jigs, reels and hornpipes. Living Tradition Magazine calls them "brilliant young musicians who present Irish music as it really is: the joy of it, the full breadth and depth of it, the power and pace of it."
Multi-award winning singer and recording artist Cara Dillon is praised by the BBC for "her crystalline, angelic voice…an instrument of rare beauty." An All-Ireland champion vocalist, her gentle charm and natural personality combine with a mesmerizing gift to relate a story through song.
"Christmas was a really special holiday in my family," says Dillon, who grew up in an area steeped in traditional music in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. "There was plenty of house-visiting which inevitably led to songs or tunes. You couldn't go up the main street of the town without hearing music sessions in the bars. Christmas is always a great excuse to have a tune or song with friends!"
"I'm really looking forward to working with Téada," Dillon adds, who joins the tour for the first time this year. "They are an amazing, vibrant bunch of fellas with one goal only...to make great music!"
23-year old dancer Brian Cunningham is also a new feature of the show this year. From Connemara, County Galway, Brian is one of the most exciting 'sean-nós' or 'old-style' dancers to have emerged from Ireland in quite some time. Pronounced "shawn-nohs," it's an older style of dance that includes percussive steps and self-expressive improvisation, every bit as entertaining (if not more so!) than classic competition-style step dance.
A bright new tradition among holiday events, Irish Christmas in America is a special show to catch this season. For more information visit www.irishchristmasinamerica.com.

"Captivating" Irish Music Magazine
"Irish Christmas in America is a sharing of connection grounded in music, and a celebration of family and good times at the winter season, whatever your tradition or national heritage." Kerry Dexter, Gather.com
"Lively and reflective...a powerful evocation of the season...the theme of hope and connection makes Irish Christmas in America a fine choice for the season. The audience clapped and stamped their way through a high flying Christmas reel and encore, giving a standing ovation for this holiday celebration." FolkWax
"The energy and musical mastery truly celebrates an Irish Christmas." Rhythm & Roots
