Ireland's hottest young folk exports fan holiday flames with 'Irish Christmas in America'

Teada, with special musical guests Grainne Hambly, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Tommy Martin and dancers Abby Magill and Sienna Hickey Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, at 7:30 p.m.

Teada, one of Ireland's busiest and most notable traditional bands, will bring its special mix of Celtic fire and holiday cheer to the Valley with special guest musicians and Irish dancers on Nov. 30.

The band, led by All-Ireland champion fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada welcomes uillean piper Tommy Martin, harpist Grainne Hambly and singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, lead vocalist for the prominent Irish band Danú, considered one of the finest female vocalists of her generation.

The show will mix Irish holiday traditions and music with contemporary flair and visuals to bring the Celtic holiday spirit to life. It will also feature Texans Abby Magill and Sienna Hickey, championship level Irish step dancers.

In previous years, the tour has played to sold-out crowds along the East Coast, and now the Valley Roots Music Society (www.vroomsoc.org) is pleased to welcome the show to the Southwest.

For CDs or artist contact information, contact Judith Joiner – 203-748-7110 – judithjoiner@gmail.com. http://www.teada.com/

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year and has special significance in Irish history. "The Megalithic Passage Tomb at Newgrange was built about 3200 BC. The passage and chamber of Newgrange are illuminated by the winter solstice sunrise. A shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber. The dramatic event lasts for 17 minutes at dawn from the 19th to the 23rd of December". www.knowth.com/newgrange.htm.

Special Presentation on the Saint John's Bible Being Created in Wales

Welcome to the holidays! Let's all share our favorite refreshments while we enjoy a special preview of the upcoming exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum. This Bible, commissioned by St. John's University in Minnesota, is being created by hand in Wales right now and is a part of the illuminated manuscripts display (opening later in December), which also includes the early history of the Bible and selections from the James Melikian collection of ancient manuscripts in Aramaic, Armenian and other languages. We plan to follow up this informative session by holding our January meeting at the Art Museum to view the display and have lunch at the Art Museum Cafe.

This is the first handwritten and illumininated Bible to be commissioned since the advent of the printing press over 500 years ago. Using quills and paints hand-ground from precious minerals and stones the scribes and artists are incorporating images from Eastern and Western religious traditions as well as influences from Native American cultures. They are working under the direction of Donald Jackson, Scribe to Queen Elizabeth.

For more information on the exhibit see the web site
www.phxartilluminated

For brief videos including interviews with the calligrapher at this studio in Monmouth, Wales see the web site www.saintjohnsbible.org

Our speaker, Stephen Nelson, is bringing displays to whet our appetites. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Saint John's University and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Saint Thomas. Upon graduating from Saint John's he spent four years in ministry: two as a Youth Minister and two years as the Aide and Master of Ceremonies for a Bishop. Steve is an Oblate of the Order of Saint Benedict (lay Benedictine) from Saint John's Abbey and is in his fifth year as a Trustee of the Phoenix Art Museum. He is a Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Merrill Lynch's Pinnacle Peak office in Scottsdale

9. JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS... MEADOWLARK'S "A SILENT NIGHT" CD

Dear Friends,

For many years, we have shared our music with thousands of fans at the Desert Botanical Garden's annual 'Noches de las Luminarias' event. This year, we set out to make a most intimate and personal recording of our most popular holiday repertoire. We're sure our new CD release, "A Silent Night" will brighten your spirit and warm your heart with its fresh and unique arrangements. Along with all the memory-filled classics you'd hope for, we've also included the beautiful ballad, "Night In That Land" by the late and gifted fiddler, Johnny Cunningham of the group, Nightnoise. These talented musicians were among our early influences and were friends who showed us a dream and sparked a desire in us that still burns brightly.

We sincerely hope you enjoy this recording and invite you to share it with those you love and cherish.
