We hope to see you and our old members and friends at a festive Christmas party featuring live music, Welsh Christmas Carols and the sharing of our favorite Welsh treats. Welsh League has had a great year, and next year will mark our 10th anniversary - so let’s celebrate together.
For additional information, please contact the Irish Cultural Center at

Basha's "Shop and Give" program
We have an opportunity to make money for Welsh League through the Basha's "Shop and Give" program this year. If you shop at Basha's you can link your store "Thank You" card to us using our group number: 23651. This must be done each year. Last year we didn't make anything because we didn't meet their minimum purchase amount. Let's see if we can improve this year. The program is running now through March 31st of 2009.
All Are Welcome
Welsh League of Arizona is an inclusive group. If you are interested in the culture of Wales and enjoy a good time relaxing and mingling with lively people you are welcome. You do not have to be of Welsh ancestry or speak Welsh – but you might be surprised at how many are learning in Arizona.

8. DUSTY BUSKERS CD RELEASE - DEC 18 AT PLUSH
The Dusty Buskers & Silver Thread Trio
CD Release Party
with Nancy McCallion's Wild Irish Revue
Plush, 340 E. 6th St.
Thursday, December 18th 9pm $5 21+
Southern Arizona street musicians made good The Dusty Buskers [2008 TAMMIES
"Up-and-Coming Artists of the Year"/"Best Bluegrass"] have not only
made it onto the various stages in town - this year, they made it into
the studio (well...the shed behind Uncle Phoenix's Menlo Park home) to
record an 8-song disc of their not-so-traditional take on traditional
Celtic songs.
The Dusty Buskers deliver an adrenaline-powered, Sonoran heat
stroke-inspired performance on the record, with palpable fervor on
such high-energy tracks as "Tell Me Ma" and "The Irish Rover" and
emotional innocence in "Wild Rover" and "I Once Loved A Lass."
The record borrows from songs of yore to present a "Life and Times"
chronology of the Buskers' fictitious ancestors, whose struggles with
whiskey and women are an empathetic cause for the two main band
members, "Fiddlin' Uncle Phoenix" and "Dusty Squirrelfisher."
With washboard backing by The Mighty Joel Ford [Al Foul/Michael P.
Nordberg/Michael Serpe] and mandolin from stringed instrument virtuoso
"Cousin" Dylan Charles [Dylan Charles & The Evolution/Family Of
Light], the album also showcases Gary MacKender [The
Mollys/Carnivaleros] on accordion, performing on "New York Girls
(Can't You Dance The Polka?)" and the Mollys-inspired "Three Drunken
Maidens."
"The Life & Times Of..." is The Dusty Buskers' debut album and the flagship
release for Old Bisbee Records, a fledgling indie label founded by the
Buskers' Squirrelfisher (Stuart Oliver) and Dylan Charles.
The label will also release Silver Thread Trio's debut album that
night. The Buskers' sister act also revives traditional
Americana/Celtic gems, with enchanting three-part harmony, and will be
performing with special guests The Rosano Brothers, among others.
Also performing that night: Nancy McCallion, with several members of
the internationally-acclaimed Tucson band, The Mollys. Nancy's Wild
Irish Revue, like the Buskers, will be playing reworked upbeat Celtic
traditionals.

"The appeal of the Dusty Buskers is that, although they play
traditional music, they do so in an unorthodox manner...The secret
ingredient in the Dusty Buskers' performances is a palpable energy and
momentum. It's not as if they place traditional music as a static
museum piece." - Tucson Weekly
"People can't help but stop and listen." - Arizona Daily Star
"A wild-assed punked-out group, one half Old Time Wild Man and the
other half rowdy Irish Bar Band... If they played in a cemetery, even
the ground would probably start rocking." - Tucson Friends of
Traditional Music News
"Picture you are walking down a dusty country trail when you come upon
two scrappy-lookin', foot-stompin' troubadours playing 'old timey'
bluegrass and vintage Celtic tunes about whiskey and ladies of easy
leisure. You say, 'Hey brothers! Mighty fine tunes…where y'all from?'
If they answer, 'Tucson!' ye can be sure that they are the Dusty
Buskers." - AZNightBuzz
9. IRISH CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
Over the next few weeks, there will be a whole series of parties related to the season starting with the Welsh on Sat leading up to the Winter Solstice on Dec 21st. Every country has their own Christmas traditions and Ireland is no exception. Here is some:
----------------------------------------------------
THE CANDLE IN THE WINDOW
The placing of a lighted candle in the window of a house on Christmas eve is still practised today. It has a number of purposes but primarily it was an symbol of welcome to Mary and Joseph as they travelled looking for shelter.
The candle also indicated a safe place for priests to perform mass as, during Penal Times this was not allowed.
A further element of the tradition is that the candle should be lit by the youngest member of the household and only be extinguished by a girl bearing the name 'Mary'.
THE LADEN TABLE
After evening meal on Christmas eve the kitchen table was again set and on it were placed a loaf of bread filled with caraway seeds and raisins, a pitcher of milk and a large lit candle. The door to the house was left unlatched so that Mary and Joseph, or any wandering traveller, could avail of the welcome.
THE WREN BOY PROCESSION
During Penal Times there was once a plot in a vilage against the local soldiers. They were surrounded and were about to be ambushed when a group of wrens pecked on their drums and awakened the soldiers. The plot failed and the wren became known as 'The Devil's bird'.
On St. Stephens day a procession takes place where a pole with a holly bush is carried from house to house and families dress up in old clothes and with blackened faces. In olden times an actual wren would be killed and placed on top of the pole.
This custom has to a large degree disappeared but the tradition of visiting from house to house on St. Stephens Day has survived and is very much part of Christmas.
DECORATIONS:
The placing of a ring of Holly on doors originated in Ireland as Holly was one of the main plants that flourished at Christmas time and which gave the poor ample means with which to decorate their dwellings.
All decorations are traditionally taken down on Little Christmas (January 6th.) and it is considered to be bad luck to take them down beforehand.
TRADITIONAL GAELIC SALUTATION
The Gaelic greeting for 'Merry Christmas' is:
'Nollaig Shona Duit'
......which is pronounced as 'null-ig hun-a dit'.

"CHRISTMAS GREETINGS!" - NOLLAIG SHONA
HOUSE CLEANING
In Ireland, late fall is the time of the year to make the house ready for the upcoming holiday celebrations. An Irish home is cleaned top to bottom, and special holiday linens would be brought out of storage. Olden days in Ireland would see the home being white washed and general repairs to the home. Once all is clean it is ready for festive Christmas decorating!
[EDITOR’S NOTE: In time past, the entire house would be whitewashed].
HOLLY
No Irish home would be complete without the holly. Holly with its glossy green leaves and festive red berries are perfect for holiday decorating. At Christmas in Ireland, holly was used to decorate the entire house. A spray was placed over the door as well as on the mantle, around picture frames, among the plates on the cupboard, as candle rings and in other areas of the home. Gifts of holly boughs were also given to neighbors. One charming folklore superstition was that the fairy folk would come in out of the cold to find shelter in the holly branches.
To the Celtics holly represented both life and rebirth, the evergreen leaves symbolized life during a time when all else was bare and the red berries represented the coming of Spring. With the coming of Christianity to Ireland the berries took on a new meaning, new life in Christ.
IRISH FOOD
The Christmas cooking would start early with the making of the plum pudding, breads and spiced beef. A traditional Irish Christmas meal might consist of roasted goose, potatoes, cranberry sauce, vegetables, sausages, and puddings. Spiced beef is often eaten sliced cold with fresh bread in the days after the main feast.
IRISH HOSPITALITY
Hospitality is abundant in Ireland and it is reflected in many holiday customs. A lighted candle would be placed in the window as a welcome beacon for both traveler and wandering priest. The candle is placed in the window on Christmas eve to signify the welcome the Holy family looking for shelter. Another aspect of Irish hospitality is seen after the Christmas meal. The doors are left unlocked and the table is set with bread and milk for travelers who might come in the night after seeing the welcome of the lighted candle in the window.
THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
The twelve days of Christmas are celebrated between the birth of Christ, December 26 and the Epiphany,(coming of the Magi) January 6. A small gift would be given on each day during this time. The 12 days of Christmas included many festivities including parties and the visiting of friends, family and neighbors. Twelfth night would be the end of the celebrations and the day that holiday decorations were taken down.
AN IRISH CHRISTMAS BLESSING
The light of the Christmas star to you
The warmth of home and hearth to you
The cheer and good will of friends to you
The hope of a childlike heart to you
The joy of a thousand angels to you
The love of the Son and God's peace to you.

--- HOW TO CELEBRATE AN IRISH CHRISTMAS
The following comes from http://www.ehow.com/how_10780_celebrate-irish-christmas.html. I won’t attest to authenticity, but there are some great items such as leaving Guinness for Father Christmas.
Step 1. Make a plum pudding early in December so it has time to mature before the Christmas feast. Some people also bake a seed cake for each person in the home.
Step 2 - Go caroling with family and friends to collect money for charity or to raise money for school trips.
Step 3 - Leave your Christmas stockings or pillowcases on the hearth or on the foot of the bed.
Step 4 - Expect Father Christmas to come bearing gifts, and leave a glass of Guinness for him to drink while he's there.
Step 5 - Place lighted candles on your windowsills on Christmas Eve as a way to guide Joseph and Mary as they look for shelter from the night. Use red candles and adorn them with holly sprigs to make them look festive.
Step 6 - Place bread and milk outside of your door to show that visitors are welcome.
Step 7 - Plan to attend Mass or midnight church services to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Step 8 - Look for a crib representing Bethlehem to be placed in the church.
Step 9 - Prepare a Christmas meal of turkey, roast potatoes and brussels sprouts. Serve the Christmas pudding for dessert.
Step 10 - Celebrate St. Stephen's Day on December 26. On this day, which is similar to Boxing Day, people collect money and gifts from others. [EDITOR’S NOT: This is usually called Wren’s Day]
Step 11 - Attend a local parade in which boys and young men dress up and wear masks to carry a pole with a holly bush attached. This symbolizes the tradition of capturing a wren in exchange for money.
