The Irish Acoustic Music Showcase will feature Mark and Erin Lanus plus Bill Lytle. Mark is best known for his work with the Brazen Heads while Erin is a two time runner up in the Colleen Pageant on the fiddle and vocals. Bill Lytle plays the guitar with Clusterfolk. They will be followed by the Lis Doon Varna Players.
--- MISS ANYTHING?
Last weekend was crazy. As a rule I try to get to as many events as I can, but sometimes things get crazy. Last week I was at the First Friday seisiun, the Sat afternoon Irish Music Showcase, the Irish Nutcracker on Sat evening, the Tim Finnegan’s seisiun on Sat afternoon followed by Pat McCrossan at the Irish Foundation Christmas party. Busy, but I still missed the story telling on Friday night by Walter Stock, the Welsh Christmas Party at the ICC on Sat at noon, and the Emerald Society Christmas Party at Rula Bula on Sat evening not to mention the Welsh Language seminar on Sat and Sun. Jeesh.
2. WINTER SOLSTICE ON SUN DEC 21
The Bar will open at 4:00 PM and dinner will also be served at 4:00PM - Ceremonies will commence at sunset.
WHAT: Solstice celebrations
WHERE: Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave., Phoenix.
WHEN: Sunday December 21st, starting 4:00 p.m.
COST: $12.00 includes dinner. $6.00 for presentations only.
This year’s Solstice celebrations at the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix are anticipated to draw a larger attendance than past years, particularly since celebration of the occasion falls on the evening of Sunday December 21st, and those attending won’t have to deal with normal rush hour traffic.
Solstice, now as in ancient times, marks the longest night of the year, whereby the Sun is at its lowest elevation in the sky. The return of the Sun from its most southern position on the horizon has always been of great ceremonial significance, in addition to serving as a celestial clock. In Phoenix the occasion is marked by music and poetry. Ribbons are placed on the branches of the special Ribbon Tree, to spiritually unite us with those no longer here. A parade from the hunger memorial on site takes us to the bonfire where the Grove of the Rising Phoenix shares their ritual traditions.
This year, the customary special Irish dinner, prepared by Chef Frank will be served starting at 4:00 p.m. Note, that reservations for the food are required, call 480-242-3500. Outside ceremonies start at sunset (5:25 p.m.) Inside the Great Hall there will be traditional Irish Music following.
This year the Irish Cultural Center will pay a special tribute to Annie Moore, the first Irish person through Ellis Island.
For further information, please call (602) 258-0109
-----------------------------------------------------------
The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year and has special significance in Irish history. "The Megalithic Passage Tomb at Newgrange was built about 3200 BC. The passage and chamber of Newgrange are illuminated by the winter solstice sunrise. A shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber. The dramatic event lasts for 17 minutes at dawn from the 19th to the 23rd of December". www.knowth.com/newgrange.htm.
The occasion now as in ancient times marks the longest night of the year. For people living in Ireland, this could mean having darkness for as many as seventeen hours. So it is understandable why the first farmers who arrived Ireland over 5,000 years ago, so eagerly awaited evidence from within the passage tomb called Newgrange, in county Meath, for signs that the sun had started to return from it's annual southern migration. The penetration of light from the rising sun into the central chamber at Newgrange on December 21 had great ceremonial significance for the Irish and others in pre-historic times, in addition to serving as a precise celestial clock for those early farmers.
Songs and poetry illuminate the longest night of the year. The vigil fire illuminates the monument, An Gorta Mor. We proceed to the Ribbon Trees and honor those no longer here to enjoy the fruits of life. By placing ribbons on the branches of this special tree(s), those dearest to us, but who are no longer here, can rest in knowing that their passing and suffering will long be remembered by those of us who care. Afterwards, the firelight guides us to the Great Hall where we feast and enjoy the music of our heritage.
To help raise funds and food for the needy, we will be placing ribbons on the "Ribbon Tree" being introduced for the first time this year. Also, those wishing to drop off non-perishable food items at the Irish Cultural Center may do so between now and the Solstice event on the evening of December 21 st .
This year, the Irish Cultural Center welcomes Grove of the Rising Phoenix, a Ár nDraíocht Féin (ADF) affiliate located in Arizona. They will present a Winter Solstice ceremony celebrating the return of the light.

The Arizona-based instrumental duo Meadowlark, performing with violinist Allen Ames
from Lyra, and special guest artist, Twelve-string guitarist, Tracy Moore, offer a spellbinding evening of music celebrating the Holiday season. These two acts will perform a heartwarming collection of holiday favorites sprinkled with a dash of traditional, contemporary and original Celtic inspired melodies and the stories behind them Friday December 12, at the Old Town Center for the Arts in Cottonwood, 8 p.m. and Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 7 p.m at Theatre 4301 in Scottsdale.
Founded by guitarist Rick Cyge and flutist, Lynn Trombetta, Meadowlark melds new age, folk and contemporary acoustic music with Celtic influences.
Cyge’s folk roots run deep and his “harp-like” fingerstyle guitar work wraps around the music like a warm comforter and will remind some of the phrasing of William Ackerman. His New England folk beginnings as a singer/composer/ guitarist were enhanced by his being founder of Wood & Strings Music Center, a hub of events, music instruction and fine instruments in the Boston scene. In 1989 his travels brought him to Arizona, where he discovered a new voice to write for in the warm and mellow tones of Trombetta’s flute.
An Arizona native, Trombetta’s musical career was nourished in the magnificent canyons of Sedona where she spent her childhood summers, playing her flute from high and allowing the sounds to waft down through Oak Creek.
Violinist Allen Ames joined Meadowlark on their first release in 1996 and has been an important ingredient ever since. He has also performed with the William Eaton Ensemble and his popular duo, Lyra, with his wife Maryanne Kremer-Ames, has been the summer music at The Briar Patch Inn in Sedona for nineteen years.
Cyge and special guest twelve-string guitarist, Tracy Moore met “in the Wood & Strings days” in the Boston Folk scene where Moore ultimately settled in to teach. Moore, now living in Washington, brings his dynamic performance on the 12 string guitar to the stage in this year's annual holiday event. Demonstrating the incredible qualities of this wonderful instrument though his melodic compositions and arrangements, Moore “plays the 12-string like nobody else" and his use of individual strings and tunes rich with harmony and counterpoint truly sets him apart.
"Rick's masterful fingerstyle guitar evokes exquisitely rich tones while Lynn's effervescent flute and pennywhistle intertwine each musical moment with joyous grace. All of the ingredients for a musical event that will soothe your heart and spirit!" -Thomas Blaney, Foothills

PRESS RELEASE

602-568-3455 cell December 02, 2008
Deadline Approaching for Irish American Contest
The upcoming 26th annual gala in February will crown the next Arizona Colleen to serve as a spokesperson for the Irish Community in area events. “Colleen” refers to an Irish maiden. She is awarded a free 12-day trip to Ireland and $1,000 in scholarships. Contestants must be single, without children, ages 18-27, and are judged on poise, communication skills, and talent. In identifying exceptional female communicators, a short essay is also required as a tribute to great Irish writers and poets.
The 2009 titleholder will compete as the Arizona Rose at the 50th annual Rose of Tralee International Festival in County Kerry in Ireland. Prizes are valued at more than $40,000 and includes a world tour. Their annual parade has 60,000 spectators with the final selection nights televised and watched by an audience the size of Super Bowl viewers in the United States. Similar to the Arizona program, the Rose judges are looking for an articulate, accomplished young woman, proud of her Irish ancestry, and who will represent well a children’s charity there.
The Phoenix St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire Committee sponsors several events to honor Arizona girls and young women who have at least a wee bit of Irish heritage. These include Little Miss Shamrock for ages 6-12 held in November, as well as the Arizona Colleen and Rose of Tralee Selection process. Each winner receives a prize package, rides in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and debuts at the Phoenix Emerald Ball.
Both competitions are not beauty contests but rather a way to recognize youth in the Arizona Irish Community. Participating builds self-confidence and introduces families to the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix.
The Colleen program application, questionnaire, and essay must be received by January 10. See details at www.azcolleen.org or call Ann at 602-568-3455. ###

It's been suggested that this discussion board could help people in terms of traveling together or sharing lodgings at the camp.
