--- SEARCH FOR STOLEN INSTRUMENT
----------------------------------------------------------
Hope your having a great Holiday Season!
I am hoping you can help me out by posting this information in the news letter and perhaps on your wepage.
Stolen 10 sting Octave Mandolin
On the evening of 12/26 about 5pm AZ time someone lifted an Octave Mandolin from my shop. The odd thing is it wasn't quite finished; the headstock was not drilled out for the tuners, no tailpiece. It is fretted and has a finish on it. It is figured Black Walnut, Sitka top; Ebony fingerboard w/brass position markers, 20" scale. The headstock has a Quilted Maple overlay and longer as it is a 10-string. After speaking with my customer we agreed that a post here might be a good thing. A police report has been filed, let's hope they catch this person. The only photos I have are of the body if anyone would like to see them. For additional information please call 480-429-7711 or email: waltkuhlman@gmail.com

2. ARTIST JOAN C. THOMPSON FEATURED ON FIRST FRIDAY JAN 2
The occasion of exhibiting at the Center brought to mind memories of her grandmother, Catherine Cruse, from County Cork. She met and married Grandpa T. in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
She was considered to be the village Saint. Artist, Joan C. Thompson remembers seeing her Grandmother kneeling with arms outstretched for long periods of time, praying. The townspeople claimed that their prayers were answered when she interceded for them! While preparing to show in the historic hall, Thompson thought of her and many other childhood memories! Thompson has a BA in art education from Madonna University in Michigan, MFA in painting and printmaking (Drake) and MA in art history (University of Chicago).
A full time artist, she co-founded the Arizona Print Group. Her work has been shown and collected internationally, most recently in France and New Zealand. She has been a Guest Curator for the Herberger Theatre Gallery and have juried and curated various shows for art organizations in Arizona: the Arizona Artists Guild, Arizona Pastel Society, Shemer Art Center. Having made figurative art in various mediums for many years, she has, "come to couch my long held beliefs about the world and its various twists and turns, in my prints and paintings. Some are statements of faith, or my personal convictions, somewhat eclectic. I remain hopeful about human nature!" See Ms. Thompson's debut at the First Friday celebration, January 2, 2009!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Here is the 1st Friday menu for January:
1Hearty beef barley stew with vegetables and herbs
Fresh Rolls with butter
Spice cake with cream
A warm winter meal for the cold nights.
See you there!
Regards,
Francis

THE COLLEEN PAGEANT STORY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Colleen Pageant is a heritage pageant that started in 1983. It is open to single women of Irish ancestry ages of 18 through 27 years old. Every year in February the Arizona Colleen is chosen, and she and her court reign over the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Faire which follows. Along with the crown and the title “Arizona Colleen” the winner is also awarded jewelry, $1,000.00 in scholarships, and a free trip to Ireland.
For the first time in 2008 and in honor of our 25th anniversary, the Arizona Colleen participated as the Arizona Rose in the Rose of Tralee program. The 2009 Arizona Colleen will compete as the Arizona Rose at the 50th Anniversary of the Rose of Tralee International Festival in Tralee, County Kerry. It is televised and offers a world tour as part of the prize package.
The Pageant’s organizers are the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Faire Committee. The goal is to promote awareness among young people of their Irish community and culture and to get them interested and involved in the many activities and events happening in the Irish communities here in the Valley and throughout the state.
The 2008 Colleen Pageant had 11 lovely, talented and articulate young ladies who brought Irish pride to the fore as they entertained the crowd of more than 240 proud family and community members. Each contestant was sponsored by a local business or organization.
