| IRISH CULTURAL CENTER WILL PAY TIRUBTE
TO ISLE'S GREAT TRADITIONS St. Patrick's Day at Phoenix's Irish Cultural Center will
likely deliver a good craic, a Celtic word (pronounced crack) for a good
time. "People should realize there's more to Ireland than drinking and potatoes, and that's the purpose of the cultural center," said Mary Moriarty, the center's executive assistant. The center, which includes a re-creation of an 1850s Irish farmhouse, offers programs on Irish literature, genealogy, archaeology, music and dance. Arizona is home to more than 500,000 people of Irish descent, or about 10 percent of the population. Phoenix's ties to Ireland include a sister-city link to Ennis, a town in west-central Ireland that dates to the 13th century.
